So I mentioned this idea before on Macrumors a while back...
But it would be sweet if the next Mac Pro was just a ATX motherboard from Apple.... Bring your own everything else...
And the socket would be Xeon of course... With a duel socket motherboard if you want..
This way we all win- because Apple could supply the case if you want elegance or if you just want some other more extendable case you can get it.

IMO this would be best. Who knows if Apple would go through with my idea.
Do you really see this happening? Apple selling a bare motherboard?

I think the chances are less than zero.

New iPhone Cases and Apple Watch Bands

WWDC is one of the events where Apple typically unveils Apple Watch bands, iPhone cases, and iPad cases in refreshed summer colors.

This year should be no exception, and we may also see another rainbow-colored pride band, as Apple has done rainbow bands in June for the last couple of years.

As I am not in the market for a Mac Pro, cases and watch bands actually have more direct buying interest to me. :p

I still want to see the new Mac Pro announced, however. And I hope it checks more boxes for folks than it doesn't.

I've heard some crazy ideas in this thread... but the "Macintosh Motherboard Kit" is on another level. :p

Don't get me wrong... I think it would be cool. But you know there is ZERO chance of that happening.

I would love to know what is being discussed in those Pro Workflow Team meetings at Apple Park. Apparently they have a bunch of people from various industries working with Apple to help shape the next Mac Pro.

But it's funny how Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others don't need these meetings... since they never stopped selling towers, workstations, servers, etc. Weird, huh... ;)

Sometimes the simplest solution is the answer... some sort of tower Mac Pro with PCIe slots. Maybe a few MVNe drives. And standard RAM slots.

I don't think they need to go full-on Cheesegrater again... since people probably don't want 3.5" HDDs anymore.

But definitely something upgradable. And standard.

Eagerly awaiting the Mac Pro Socks!

Just watch Linus Tech Tips they tested it out... reaches 100degrees and throttles even with the apple patch’s.

You pay extra for the Apple design... You could buy all the same parts in the 2013 Mac Pro when it came out for cheaper then.:. It’s gunna be the same for 2019... apple always jacks up the price of their computers.. sure it’s a nice design- but I want power over design in this case
This isn't really the case.

Apple made a big deal when the Mac Pro came out that it was cheaper than the competition, and it was.

Likewise the 2013 Mac Pro was price-competitive with other offerings (with the caveat that you obviously had much more flexibility with the PCs, which has always been the case.)

The Mac Pros only became noncompetitive over time and a lack of updates. You will always be able to assemble a PC you build yourself for cheaper, but building and servicing your own machine is something few professional users want to deal with.

It’s sucks that I have to own a Windows PC or Linux PC to do ML development.

Why bash on Linux ?

I can understand bashing on Windows.. It is the epitome of all that is wrong in the universe.

But Linux ?

Why bash on Linux ?
Because it’s the default and csh is not? :D

But Linux ?
I can understand preferring to have a single computer, and preferring that computer to run a specific OS. For me too, Linux on the desktop would only become my preferred choice if I suddenly found myself unable to do my work on a Mac.

Was it price-competitive against machines specced with dual Radeons? IIRC they made it being cheaper than a pair of real FirePros a big part of their angle.
Maybe? The amd radeon 7970 cost 550$ at introduction.
https://www.anandtech.com/show/5261/amd-radeon-hd-7970-review

The firepro lineup at the time was quite more expensive:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/6137/the-amd-firepro-w9000-w8000-review-part-1

I’ve been trying to find articles in which they pick pc parts to make a mac pro equivalent and compare prices. I only found this one:

https://www.futurelooks.com/new-apple-mac-pro-can-build-better-cheaper-pc-diy-style/

The author picks a single nvidia quadro that’s about 700$ more expensive than the two amd 7970 combined. Still, at the end of the build, the pc was around 2.000$ more expensive. Substract the 700$ difference between the gpus and still the mac pro was cheaper.

However, it was still “nice” of Schiller to blatantly lie on stage when introducing the mac pro configurations and boasting “if you know what d300 cost this price is super impressive”.

But also needs room for storage.

Just use an external RAID/JBOD/NAS connected with Thunderbolt 3 or Ethernet. I have a 16TB Drobo connected via Thunderbolt to hold all my media (music, videos, etc).

If the pros vendor lock out Nvidia they are already non competitive for Machine Learning and data scientists.

The really serious work of that type is being done on the "Big Iron" servers like Aidenshaw supports with up to 8 CPUs with hundreds of total cores, terabytes of memory and petabytes of cloud storage. The PC is just the front end terminal to send the jobs and look at the returned data so you won't be using a Mac Pro (or a Z8) to do that. More like a MacBook Pro or Dell 5000 series.

The Mac Pro will be used for machine learning, but it will be based on Apple Core ML.

....., but building and servicing your own machine is something few professional users want to deal with.

True .
But few professionals would buy into a system that has a 15k monitor with bits and bobs glued to the back as its halo model .

Actually, make that none .

Pros build their comps when they buy it, it's called BTO , and it requires a certain flexibility of the base design .

Are Drobos still legal ?

Is that the same Apple that's been going down the consumer rabbit hole since 2012 (or so) ?

You can do remote ML in a Mac (even with cuda), also you can do it virtualizing Linux even with docker w/o leave Mac OS, but you can't do ML with dual D700 GPUs (fp8100 afaik)

Now with tensor flow 2 ML should be easier even in platforms without cuda or opencl.
I still learning ml (I come from opencl smmp world in non ML related applications) so far I consider for ML the Gap among nVidia and AMD Radeon GPU is almost inexistent but I believe going ML training with GPUs have it's days numbered (while non ML gpgpu applications will last quite longer), ML has to move to tensor flow optimized platforms.

Mac OS is by far the best operating system for me in terms of its Unix capabilities- and support for Machine learning development.. it just doesn’t have the hardware support so I’m using a custom built PC and Ubuntu to do the work

So, for insight and context, please explain your workflow. Application stack, and lets say a typical development run through a minor revision ?

What's wrong in the universe is how's there no competition between mainstream computer operating systems ...
At least Windows is trying, while Apple keeps building their little wall and Linux doesn't care .

lot of code is already written for cuda in c++. This is where the problem is.
I see the problem now..

Why are people on this forum (and others) talking about a DIY Mac Pro motherboard. In what universe would that ever happen?
Not in this universe where people file a class action lawsuit fighting for her right to repair vs an Apple corporation trying to convince everybody about diy repairs/upgrades are dangerous, antiecological, worsen the climate change, renders you ugly, and hurts Jony's mom deep in her heart as nobody will buy her son latest designs...
