Good for you, I guess?

As with so many things anymore, people have to offer their opinion on something they haven’t used. 😆 This thread makes me want to use WalmartPay MORE due to the flat out ignorance.

My point was that using a store's proprietary payment system makes it more likely that a particular vendor will not eventually accept Apple Pay, which I prefer to use everywhere. But thanks for the sassy reply. Enjoy being tracked by Walmart. :)

I’m sure in 23 pages it has been brought up, but I tried to ApplePay at Home Depot the other day - card wasn’t in my wallet.

No ApplePay, no more PayPal, no TAP of any kind, no nothing but go back to the car to see if it was in the center console.

That frustrated me more than WM ever has - because they had it, then they took it away.
I’ll admit at least Walmart has a way to pay with your phone. Home Depot doesn’t offer it in any capacity at all. Since I don’t carry my wallet really, my choice was literally leave the items and go elsewhere (Walmart and Ace in the same parking lot thankfully).

I don't HAVE TO or NEED TO have a smart phone. It is a CHOICE OF CONVENIENCE.

Problem is that people today have become so addicted to convenience and easy life that they confuse it with actual need.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a teenager about 10 years ago:

Teen: when you were my age, you didn't have cell phones, right?

Me: that's right

Teen: how did you stay in touch with your friends when not at school?

Me: we called them on the phone at home.

Teen: what if they were not home?

Me: then we left a message...IF they had an answering machine.

Teen: (eyes wide open)....speechless

You can tell he just had no concept of not being in instantaneous communication 24/7 with anyone he wanted....but it is CONVENIENCE, not NEED.
And with all that, we weren’t bothered while doing something and we’re able to enjoy things with focus.

My favorite thing is what happens if someone died. Me answering the phone isn’t going to bring them back.
What if someone was in an accident, we’ve planned for that.

"What if it is an emergency?"

Then call the police, doctor who other such person. What am I supposed to do about it?

Fun game: take your local Cub Scout Troup or other organization to the nearest Walmart and challenge them to spread out searching the store for any item NOT made in China. Appropriate rewards could include a $4 Walmart gift card, or a new Rolls Royce; it doesn’t matter because no one can win.

Just have to go to the grocery section and pick out some oranges.

So you rather pay more for the exact same product elserwhere... interesting. Like your typical household items like laundry soap, or toliet paper. Smart 👍

Valuing one's time is smart. You can always get more money. You're not gonna get more time.

So yes, I might pay (totally making this up) 10% more if I go to the Shop & Save that is two minutes away, and be totally done and home in 30 mins, rather than spending 90-120 mins to go to the Walmart and back. Absolutely. It isn't even a close call.

If you don't value your own time, that's totally your call.

"I wasn't able to get a hold of you."

Yeah sorry I was at Walmart trying to figure out how to pay for my items. Did you know they don't take apple pay? Last time I shop there."

I shop at Walmart perhaps 1-2 times a year, usually when vacationing, as it is typically our fallback place when being in an unknown area. Living in the top 3 most extensive metropolitan areas has its perks. We never shop at Walmart as we have plenty of other, better and cheaper options, all of which take NFC payments, but If I had to shop at Walmart frequently, I would be majorly upset that they dont take NFC payments.

ApplePay is not about contactless so much as security. Your card info is not stored on your device. Once the initial setup is complete, an unrelated number is stored in the secure onclave which is then used to communicate with the bank in a one time transaction token that goes away after payment. This is about as secure are you can get other than paying cash. Contactless like WalMart and Kroger use, connects to your credit card or bank account so might as well be the same as using the card itself only you dont need the card. There are no additional security benefits, only convenience. I appreciate that and use Kroger pay but ApplePay would be a better option.
I work in IT for a retail organization that takes Apple Pay. I am responsible for our PCI compliance as well.

Apple Pay is secure for sure but so is Walmart’s. Both only transmit tokens basically (once setup) and not any CC data is transmitted or stored at the store or stored on your phone. The encrypted tokens are transmitted over SSL.

I am not sure if Walmart stores your credit card info on it’s servers during the initial setup process. If they do that would be a data breach concern of their corporate servers and not a payment security concern.

Their payment system does work on ALL phones and not just iPhones though.

Which entirely defeats the purpose of upgrading to chip. The added security of the chip is useless when they have to take your card out of your sight and anyone could simply write down its details with a pen and paper while the card is away. Upgrading to chip by getting wired pinpads was the most stupid decision US sit down restaurants could have made. Now it’ll take them ages to bring payment to the tables.
Ages? A lot of restaurants have devices right at the table to pay.

In Los Angeles, I tend to avoid places that don't take  Pay, and on a more granular level, MasterCard (Apple Card). If I have to pull out my Ti Apple Card or another credit card (i.e., Visa), it's usually the last time I visit (sans Costco).

Plus, fewer and fewer ppl have used cash since the pandemic started so it was a natural fit. The only exceptions for me now are Costco ( Pay + Visa) and maybe a restaurant or two that I like (w outdoor seating). I always ask before I sit down, "Does this restaurant take  Pay?" and 90% or so of the time, they say "Yes" or "Yes, of course."

Most restaurants that take  Pay will often have you walk with them to the POS terminal to handle the transaction, takes no time a tall; others will bring you a small smartphone-with-a-receipt-printer-bolted-on portable POS terminal and you can handle it at the table. Those "Ziosk" terminals almost never take  Pay but only card + chip; I've only seen one that took  Pay. Nearly all of the food food trucks take  Pay but nearly all of the fruit carts are going Zelle or Venmo (cash is still king, though). Hell, even the little panadería down the street from me not only takes  Pay but has done so for years. Car washes now take  Pay (even the coin-ops) which is kind of nice. Even Target and Kohls take  Pay!

Walmart + Sam's Club aside, places that do not take  Pay are few(er) and far between. The last one I was at was Lowe's and they explicitly stated (w signage) "no tap or Apple Pay." I asked why, the rep said it's because they haven't updated their terminals yet. --That was only a few weeks ago.

It’s the norm outside the US to have the waiter/waitress bring a wireless card reader to the table, but in the US that still doesn’t happen at any restaurants. None have the staff using wireless card readers at the tables. A few of them such as Chilis or Olive Garden have tablet-like devices on every table, and a few others such as Cheesecake Factory have an app, but the overwhelming majority offer neither of those two options and the staff must still take the patrons’ cards away from the table to process the card payments. It will take years for all those restaurants to bring payment to the tables.

Given that I've had my CC and CC # stolen at restuarants more than a handful of times, I can't wait for this practice to die a quick, painful death. The servers don't want to handle payments (except cash) because of the liabilities involved with CC fraud. For me, part of the appeal for the  Card was no numbers on it, and the card can be locked-out from the phone.

That's why most restaurants (esp. gastropubs!) are all on portable POS terminals (i.e., little smartphone-looking tablets with a printer). The most common one I've seen is when the server puts the device on your table when you're done, it will glow RED until you've completed the transition, then glow GREEN; it takes seconds vs. waiting for the waiter to shuttle your card and receipts around. --This is the very best option.

Another option I've seen a handful of times are receipts with a QR code on them, scan it, and pay (w.  Pay) on your phone. Hand back the receipt to the server, they can verify it has been paid on their end (via notification). --Slower but functional.

But ymmv depending on where in the US you are. In Texas, for example, hardly any sit down restaurants have wireless POS so really the only ones taking apple pay are the ones with tablet-style devices on the tables (Chilis, Olive Garden) or the ones that offer an app (cheesecake factory, some restaurants on Open Table), which are just a very small minority of the restaurants in the region.

I work a second job at Walmart I work the self checkout area. It is amazing to me how many people only carry their phone and a ID.

I use apple pay all the time. But, i always have a backup credit card and enough cash for a meal and to enough gas to get home.

I just don't trust the networks and my phone enough for it to have all my info and no physical cards and documents

Depends where you are eating. If they don't have signage, just ask. Not unusual to make a trip to the POS terminal with the server to pay (often faster).

And it also depends on the city/region. Go to Houston, TX or anywhere in TX and you still find too many sit down restaurants and bars that haven’t even upgraded to chip, let alone have any wireless card readers.
