Fantastic find, OP (m477h3w)! Many thanks. I see on the TCCatchup desktop website, there are support/suggestion forums too.

I hope BBC 4 comes to the iPhone/iPod Touch version soon.

Thank you :D Credit due to the guys at TVCatchUp though I think. Follow them on Twitter if you want up to date information and announcements.

Does anyone know if this works with 'TV out' so you can watch it on a larger screen?

I don't have the cable but if it works this could be the clincher to get it.

I see no reason why it shouldn't. I have the TV out cable and watch BBC iPlayer throught the TV, works a charm and plays off the internet exactly the same as TVCatchUp does. I will let you know for sure if I remember to try it out

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

There's an app in the uk store where channel 5 are charging £2.99 I think for viewing the Europa cup live on your iPhone. Glad I didn't buy it. Lol !!!!

Wow, bit pricey when you can get it for free with loads of other channels!!!!

is this only for UK? I am getting not authorized message

I am afraid so. There may be ways around it though I guess?

What's the reason behind this? Is it not legal? I thought seeing as they're free channels it would be ok.

Well according to their site, they are totally legal (whether that is true or not, who knows)

3. Is TVCatchup legal?

Yes. TVCatchup is completely legal, and the broadcasters were consulted and themselves participated in a thorough review of the services offered.

We take such matters extremely seriously. The site is represented by leading copyright lawyer Laurence Gilmore of Hamlins LLP in conjunction with Expert Counsel Madeleine Heal under the counsel of the foremost authority in copyright and intellectual property law,the eminent Robert Engleheart QC of Blackstone Chambers.

It isn't.

It's worth noting that TV Catchup claimed they were completely legal when they used to offer a network PVR service until they got shut down then too.

They attempted to claim that they just decided a site called TV Catchup that only offered live streams was a better idea than a network PVR. Of course.

Yes it does - just tried it using Apple's Composite Video out cable*. Bandwidth looks slightly less than when using iPlayer, but still completely watchable. Go for it - and BTW: there's nothing to "get" - it's not even an app., it's a mobile Safari page to visit/bookmark - couldn't be simpler (or cheaper!)

I don't think so. The TV out is related to the iPod part of the phone not Safari. Although it is the same Quicktime player playing back the video.

I've not tried it though.

You really ought to try something before speculating. And it's not an iPod function - it's a page on mobile Safari - and plays out video perfectly OK - with auto-rotate, the lot - just like iPlayer.

Edit: BTW: * If you want to get an AV Cable: you have to get an (expensive) Apple one - the cheap ones on eBay don't have the spoiler chip inside, necessary for the latest iPhone/iPod Touch Video-out to work.

Looking at the Terms and Conditions on their site, they seem to have a lined up a number of legal experts behind them. I wonder if they're looking to fight a test case?

Well they'd be fools not to have a strong legal team.
While I am enjoying it I have little expectation that this will be allowed to continue. Especially if O2 start moaning about 3G use.

Phazer what an utterly miserable outlook you have. If it goes it goes. If it stays it stays. What are your legal credentials anyhoo? Let's just all be happy that it is here at the moment. This has to be one o the biggest single develoents for the iPhone I have had yet!

Yep I can back this up, tried it out at lunch time and it worked just as well as iPlayer in my opinion. Quite pleased actually, as now I can watch freeview channels in my bedroom, and not just downstairs :D

I'm an international broadcast rights consultant and agent.

It's going to go.

Let's just all be happy that it is here at the moment.

Why would I be happy a site is stealing people's work without permission and selling their own advertising around it?

I do not doubt that you know a lot more about all this than me, but seriously, there is no need to preach about how this service is stealing. I pay my TV licence, so why should I lose this service because some people maybe using it without one?

It would be a sad state of affairs if this service did get pulled. It is innocent until proven guilty in this country, and license payers should not suffer because some people may use it illegally. How about the BBC reduce the crazy wages they pay presenters etc. and pump some of the money into new methods of detecting people who are stealing and leave the law abiding public alone?

I really don't want to get into a debate here, but please, if this service is of no interest to you, don't moan at the consumers who have paid for their license and are enjoying the service!!!!

It's nothing to do with the TV licence at all - the numbers of people using this service as some way to avoid the licence fee would be infantesimal. Have you actually read what I've written?

TVCatchup are stealing the content of various broadcasters and rights holders and putting their own adverts around it, and then keeping that money since they don't pay any of the people involved in the programmes, and make it harder for the people involved to sell their content elsewhere or broadcasters to make as much money from the adverts they legimately take. It's theft of the copyright, not anything to do with a TV licence.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I have not seen any advertising by TVCatchUp on the iPhone stream? Just the usual adverts exactly the same as you see on the TV???

If I have a TV License (I do BTW) and watch this at home I'm OK?

what if out and about?

or in someones house who doesnt have a TV license?

I've just got this working and I really like it but I dont want to be doing anything illegal though

I'm a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to legalities and the interweb....

Its better than the iplayer because it works over 3G

Ok, you are an agent. You or your client stands to lose money from them doing this. I now understand your position.

When will it go as you seem to be so knowledgeable?

The desktop version certainly has TVCatchUp's own adverts inserted into it. How else do you think the company would make money to pay for the bandwidth?

The police aren't going to burst into your house with attack dogs and arrest you for watching something on the Internet. (Although it is the UK so you never know...) Especially since you can just turn on the TV and watch everything on there in real time.

As long as you have your bogus TV tax licence, just forget about it.

If it is decided it is illegal I wouldn't watch it. The thing that makes me uncertain is that this service has been written about in more than one national newsaper without so much as a suggestion that it is illegal.

Phazer should just produce the appropriate legislation and then we will all shut up.
