iPad Pro Watching Dolby Vision on mini led iPad shockingly bad

I’m so angry I’m returning my 12.9 M1 iPad Pro, apart from watching demo YouTube hdr videos which is great and where the brightness shows it just doesn’t work right, even watching Apple TV shows on there TV + app in Dolby vision makes the image so dark and the colour is lacking so much, on Disney plus same thing all the shows are Dolby vision and again the screen is dark, there isn’t any hdr shows on Disney plus and Apple TV app on mobile, so what’s the point of the high brightness screen if using apples own TV app looks horrible and dark

Because the screen should be brighter for everything even watching 4k hdr blu ray rip on infuse isn’t going brighter it’s like only YouTube makes the iPad go into 1600nits the display is dark for everything else

Only the 12.9 has the brighter/brightest screen…Unless you mean something different?

Edit: Oh you are saying that all iPads are the same and don’t go brighter for that particular content including the M1 version?

Apple TV, For All Mankind, Season 2, Episode 7 - look at time starting about 39:00 in (two women in room, talking together). On my 2021 12.9 Pro, the scene is quite dark; on my Samsung 4K HDR TV with the Apple TV app, it appears normally lit.

Edit - Ignore, this a result of poor viewing conditions (bright room), not improper display. iPad Pro looks great/same when viewed in same lighting as TV is used.

Watching Apple TV + shows like shimagdoon or how ever you spell it lol is dark the whole selling point is the 1600nits for hdr but I can’t find any content apart from YouTube demo clips that go brighter

Exactly it’s all dark it’s like the hdr doesn’t activate the brighter screen, I don’t have Netflix but infuse Disney and tv+ is all the same so what’s the point of this mini led display

What’s the main reason it has a mini led display and high peak brightness if nothing apart from YouTube can actually make use out of it, when apples own tv app can’t use the peak brightness what’s the point exactly? It’s nice showing YouTube hdr demos but that’s not what I brought this for, also the m1 iPad is more laggy in games than my 2018 iPad Pro something isn’t right, apple just can’t get it together anymore

You are blaming the hardware, but you should be blaming the content creators and providers. For example: On my new Sony Bravia TV, my iPad Air 2020, and any other 4K HDR device I’ve seen, the Netflix show The Crown’s latest season is way too dark to really enjoy. Did I blow a fuse about all the devices? Of course not. I know the issue lies with the bozos who chose to use Dolby Vision and very dark sets. No device can really improve The Crown much because it was filmed dark, for whatever reason. However, if I watch other Dolby Vision shows and movies they usually look okay, although most Dolby Vision content looks a bit dark to me. Find better content to watch that was actually filmed by people with more talent in videography.

HDR does not necessarily mean brighter content. It means 64 times as many colors, and that is where HDR excels. SDR is 8-bit color. That is (2^8)^3=16.7 million colors. HDR is 10-bit color. That is (2^10)^3=1.07 billion colors. HDR can also provide truer blacks. But the difference is basically in the greatly increased number of colors. The M1 iPad has no issue displaying HDR, nor does my iPad Air 2020. No device can make a crap show or movie that was filmed too dark look great.

We just watched Schmigadoon. On my M1 12.9, I am usually saying it’s too bright. At about 1/3 screen brightness, the quality was brilliant. Anything brighter would make our eyes bleed.

I do photo editing in the field and the brightness is great in bright, outdoor conditions. I’m not seeing your issues / complaints.

Color separation and contrast was noticeably better on the 2021. Highlights such as Tony's arc reactor, lightning effects, etc. were much brighter on the 2021 than 2018. In dark scenes, it was easier to see details on the 2021 whereas things looked muddier on the 2018.

What picture mode are you using on your cx? Mine is set to Cinema (for the greatest accuracy) and on my 12.9 2021 iPad the lamp looks even brighter than on my C8. Background colors are a bit darker though. HDR doesn't increase the entire picture brightness, it just allows less clipping on brighter images, depending on the content providers choices. This is not an image where you would see 1600 nits.

Um, my iPad Pro 12.9” (2021) is BLINDINGLY bright with HDR content. The one thing this screen does well without a doubt is display HDR content. I wish it was as good at SDR content!

Apples own shows on tv + are bad, so that doesn’t make sense

Watch it on a Oled tv and you will see the colours pop and it being bright it’s no where near where it should look like

Infuse 7 with hdr 4k rip doesn’t go brighter it looks dark I checked out space jam and it was horrible and a YouTube clip in hdr was so much brighter

I don’t like cinema mode that’s to dark for me I use standard with it all tuned for me, I like the image to be bright, cinema mode makes it all dark
