iPad Pro Watching Dolby Vision on mini led iPad shockingly bad

But even on the new iPhone 13 pro max using hdr on YouTube is amazing and bright and Dolby vision video filmed on device is bright and uses the extra nits, but using Disney plus even watching free guy that’s bright and vivid looks horrible and dark but once low power mode is on it turns off hdr and looks much better; I don’t get why it can’t recognise it’s Dolby vision and make it brighter
 
It IS odd that Apple only allows the display to ramp up brightness when viewing certain content.

I’m guessing it has to do with extending the life of the panel, though that bodes ominously for the display if you do watch a lot of HDR…

It does recognise it, my iPad Pro looks the same as my LG OLED does when viewing Disney Plus in Dolby Vision. You either want it brighter than the studios intended or have a defective iPad.

nah I have the cx I dont use filmmaker mode its to dark, watch free guy and tell me its nicer and vibrant its dull and dark turn low power mode on and see the change

Don’t agree. My iPad does Dolby vision better than my LG OLED.

So dark ok no worries thought whole
Idea of hdr was to make the image pop, also watching it in imax cinema it was not dark and dull but you enjoy that
 
There is something to the argument that some of the content is ‘filmed dark’. I watched Foundation S1 E2 on an SDR screen and found that you could easily see the whole Bishops Claw creature as it emerged from the mine in the training simulation scene, while when I later rewatched the episode on a Dolby Vision-capable Philips TV it was only the head that was visible. It’s interesting that there are these substantial differences in colour revisions of the same content.

No, the whole idea of HDR is in the name, “high dynamic range”. So the things you want to be bright can be really bright while other things are dark. It means that if the filmmaker wants something to pop they can, but if they want the theme to be darker but make certain things or light sources higher in luminosity they can.

That is (2^10)^3=1.07 billion colors. HDR can also provide truer blacks. But the difference is basically in the greatly increased number of colors. The M1 iPad has no issue displaying HDR, nor does my iPad Air 2020. No device can make a crap show or movie that was filmed too dark look great.

I can watch HDR 4K on my Oneplus8Pro and the Amoled screen, on Movies Anywhere & it looks Fantastic.. I believe OP's saying the same content on OLED screens looks great but NOT on the Ipad 12.9 2021 Pro? I just bought the same device specifically for HDR Dolby Vision Content movies and video editing, so this could be a deal breaker.. I have 13 days to decide with bestbuy return policy.. and kind of bummed as this was the 1st Apple device for me... EVER.
For comparison I have an LG C9 at home.
I would rather buy a Samsung S7+ (or wait for S8?) with an OLED screen for Mobile 4K movies?
Seeing how this post was from July 2021 unless there have been any updates that have fixed issue?

One more question, maybe you all can help me in my new ipad setup.. I have "Movies Anywhere" and about (16) 4K HDR digital downloads from Disc purchases,
I notice LOTR extended version, says "4K" to watch or doYour Device is NOT Compatible with 4k playba" Whaa???? (12.9 2021 Pro)
Should I open (or download Itunes? sync my Movies anywhere with it?
see if I can sync/download the movies into itunes to watch in 4K or HDR??
OR maybe VUDU ?
Then I can compare to LG C9 and Oneplus8PRO and give my observations on this post & decide if I will keep the iPAD?

Link your Movies Anywhere account to iTunes so your movies will transfer over. Caveat, I believe movie studios limit downloads to 1080p and 4K is streaming only.

By the way, you can link your MA account to iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, etc. and have access to MA movies on all these platforms. Some studios don't support MA though (e.g. Paramount).
 
OK I finely found a list of devices that will play 4K or HDR Movies Off-line, so we can enjoy our stunning, new & amazing MINI LED screens while flying. Can you imagine how jealous other passengers will be? they wil be watching our ipad Too!

Note, iTunes does download 1080p HDR when available. It’s just 4K that you can’t download.

Infuse Pro and nPlayer are also perfectly capable of playing back 4K HDR content ripped from 4K UHD Blu-rays. Those are pretty huge, though (50-100GB) and it’s kind of a hassle to rip. Mind, you can buy a 5TB portable HDDs for just $90. Around $120 if you want built-in USB-C connector.

LOTR was not available in HDR.. can You tell me about any 1080P HDR movies that compare with Dolby Vision ?
Because Lord of the Rings for example, Downloaded for OFFLINE use, looked TERRIBLE on a 2021 21.9 M1 iPAD. Totally NOT worth the investment into Mini LED premium price.
It looked great streeming.. But I have a 65" OLED screen.. I do not stream while at home. I use Dolby Vision discs.
