There is a new Kindle Fire 8" coming in early October. With an unidentified processor at the same clock speed as the last one, and 1.5gig of ram — same as the current 8" Fire. I don't know how much better the new processor will be over the old one, but I'm unimpressed by what exists. These devices however, at around $80 seem to be what's sucking up all the small-tablet oxygen.

With the iPhone SE no longer available from Apple Stores, I think mini users should consider themselves lucky if the mini 4 remains available next year.

I might pull the trigger and get the mini 4 now. Best Buy gave me a 10% off coupon plus i have some gift certificates. Wish I got one when it dropped down to $275 a couple of weeks ago.

Considering the mini line the 2 3 and 4 are on the list for getting IOS 12. I think that shows that Apple still cares about the mini a little. I don’t know though the future after that though.

Cheap tablets are aplenty, and often have sub-retina resolutions. Premium small tablets - you're limited to Samsung and perhaps stuff like MiPad. However Android really doesn't have much of a tablet ecosystem - the iPad mini still remains the only relevant option, outdated as it is.

Well the SE is getting iOS 12 and it got the ax so... Sad times.

I was thinking about upgrading my 7 plus to the max (haha) but the plus sized iphone still doesn’t have all the ipad features like pip and split apps.

Isn't that interesting? They are making super-phablets, but they still want you to buy a tablet too...

I’d bet the iPhone XS max is not far off the iPad mini in terms of screen real estate.

Not even close. Quick estimate, about 55% of the screen area.

In fact, it should be even a bit less because of the funny screen shape of the Xs max.

A stretched rectangle has a much lower area to diagonal ratio than a more square-ish shape. And area is proportional to the square of the dimensions.

After losing my iPad mini 2 a few days ago due to stupid carelessness (note to self, never ever leave anything on the roof of the car again), I am looking to replace it.

Went to the store to play around with the new normal sized iPad and I'm definitely not sold on it. The pencil support sounds nice, but it just felt too big. I'll probably be naive and wait until the rumored October event to see if there's a refreshed mini, but looks like I'll have to snatch up a mini 4 :(

As to the notion that a larger iPhone is a viable substitute for the iPad Mini...

The Mini's screen is about 2 1/3 times larger than that of the iPhone 7 Plus!

It's THREE TIMES the size of the iPhone 7!

Anyone who thinks that they provide the same experience either hasn't owned or used both at the same time, isn't very discriminating, or holds their iPhone up to their eyeballs!

Likewise, anyone who thinks that the regular iPad can replace the Mini must not curl up with their iPad, read books in a cozy nook, schlep it around, put it in their coat pocket, take photographs with it, do astronomy or stargazing with it, birdwatch with it, go on hikes with it, etc. The convenience factor, light weight, and manageability of the Mini are incredible compared to the regular iPad.

Letter to Tim: Give us an iPhone SE 2 and an iPad Mini 5 and watch pent-up demand and sales soar!

But the problem is the aspect ratio. The phone is too tall. The mini 4 which is used heavily in aviation, has a screen that is the same aspect ratio as FAA charts. The phone does not.

Really? I’ve seen entire Boeing 737 fleets with a 9.7 fixed to the side of the cockpit. Should be even better, no?

737's are pressurized so suction cups work and there may well be more places to mount them. On smaller non-pressurized planes, the suction cups don't work well above about 12,000' and having it mounted on the yoke is much better to prevent spatial disorientation in IMC.

I don’t know about soar but I’m sure it would be significant. But maybe not the kind of sales and profits Apple is used to these days and has their eyes on. I think we just have to hope the pendulum swings back toward smaller mobile devices someday soon.

Will it ever happen? We need a 5!
Indeed. It’s the only iOS device I still actually use, because it’s *just* small enough to fit in jacket and pants pockets, but still *just* big enough to be a useful sketching & illustration surface. iPhones are too small (and wtf do I need a phone for anyway), iPads are too big. The iPad Mini is just the right size, it just needs the Pro digitizer and Pencil support. I can actually work in spreadsheets safely and comfortably hold it in one hand and tap & write with the other, for extended periods of time. I never have to worry about where to set it, I never have to worry about it freezing in the cold, because it always fits securely inside my coat pockets where body heat keeps it alive. Matching all the horsepower of the full-sized iPads was the right thing to do. Add pencil support, watch functionality, enable dialer back in, & quit sabotaging the most personal and useful tools you’ve ever made, Apple. Watch Star Trek, what are they walking around with as they’re working? iPad mini sized tablets.

As I run into similar touch glitches that I had with the 12.9 iPad Pro with the 2018 iPad, I'd advise against. It was working great (typical) for the first month and lately it's all buggy as hell. I am hoping iOS 12 fixes some of these issues since my mom will eventually inherit this iPad and I have no time to run to Apple, the only iPad I had consistently good luck with was the Mini 4.

So if it were me, I'd replace my Mini 4. Otherwise, unless there's a Mini 5 at some point, I won't bother.

Hope you can get what you need.

The lack of an iPad reveal at the gather round event is a clear indication of apple’s panicked reaction to the huge outpouring of love shown for the mini, they pulled the launch and scrapped the scrapping of the mini, happy days!
Looking forward to the NEW mini announcement in the coming month. :)

Add me to the list of iPad mini lovers. I had the original but misplaced it at some point, sadly.. Really want another one, but the 4 is too long in the tooth to pay full price.
