I would support Windows Phones if after 5 years of using them they finally got the apps I was missing with with Windows Phone 7 sorted, but 7.5, 8, 8.1, 10 and years later and the third party app support and localised regional apps (banks and services) are still glaringly absent as is the the lack of google services support. It means it never becomes a viable platform for me to use and I've had most of the flagships year by year, but no more. They took a very big back step with the 950 & XL with poorer build quality, and importantly especially with the XL a glaringly unfinished OS . If Windows phone can't at least offer stable OS to make up the lack of apps then it leaves little to give it 'grace' for me. I honestly think it's too late for Windows phone to gain real traction and developer support, we have heard enough of the 'it's coming' for over 5 years and we're still hearing that 'it's coming'... Well get back to me when it does, until then sadly the platform has made itself irrelevant in a marketplace full of devices that have 'content' NOW ...

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Yeah I have the keyboard update now. I actually decided to flash a newer firmware on it last night and re-setup the phone and now the keyboard is behaving. Sony phone must be the easiest to flash devices.

Will see how battery holds out with this new firmware. :)

I actually liked the Sony launcher on the Z3 but on the Z5 whilst it's similar they did take away some of the better features leaving some of the more mundane. For example, the left panel in the app drawer has gone and your now left with a very bland app drawer.

I like Acton launcher because I like the way it colourised the interface to match your wallpaper like this..

Ah I have the Z3 tablet so must have the different launcher.
I like some of the skins you guys have :)

Has anybody tried Marshmallow update on Z[3/5] yet? I'm tempted but worry about losing connectivity, those things are sometimes strangely slow at picking up the fact Europe exists.

Window Phone is Dead

I have to say, it's no surprise to know that fact. Having heard too much of these kinds of comments, actually I know the truth that Microsoft is too weak to stand up again in phone fields. But just can't help. My bad.

Microsoft now owns surfacephone.com domain name so maybe Surface Phone is a little closer to reality.

Good news. Finger crossed.

Just the new Moto X and Nexus phones.

I'm eager to see new phones from other OEMs, but the above phones are the only ones I'd really consider.

The rumored Surface phone. I'm also interested in what Nokia might bring if they do make an 2016 comeback as rumored. (The Finnish Nokia not the Microsoft bought part)

So now that we're well into 2016, and we've seen previews of the big three earlycomers (Galaxy S7, G5 and One M10), which gets your vote for the most anticipated?

In my view the G5 looks like a beast, with many one of a kind features. And for a long time I've thought that HTC could really make a comeback with the M10. The S7 does look good, but it's more evolutionary than anything.

And what about later-in-2016 phones? OnePlus 3, Moto X, 2016 Nexus? Looking forward to any?

S7 could be amazing. That's my most anticipated phone. Haters will continue hating but if the rumors come true, they'll have so little to work with.

Little to no interest in m10 or g5. Mainly just want to see if HTC can survive.

Curious about the iPhone 7. Not expecting it to wow me though knowing Apple's typical path.

Curious about new nexus. Just to see where they go with it. Not exactly a huge fan of stock.

2016 IMO should be about software than hardware.

Of course the hardware will be great for Android this year, with all flagship phones from Samsung, LG, HTC, OnePlus; getting the SD820 + 4GB RAM + based off Android Marshmallow, and now these phones having high end artistic build quality, so performance shouldn't be an issue.

And Apple of course bringing the A10 chip, and whole new phone design, will look and perform great.

But...software, now is key more than ever. Don't care how great the S7 is, I'm not a fan of Touchwiz = bloated like a beached whale. And the LG G5 may look amazing, and have best design ever, with great hardware, but LG's UI blows and is laggy. And iOS I frigging hate iOS, but Apple sure makes the best hardware, and best phone design, but they need to majorly overhaul iOS to get big Android fans to ever look at an iPhone again. The screen full of app icons, and laundry list of limitations on the iPhone is ridiculous in 2016, it's not 2008 anymore Apple.

Let's see software upgrades, OS changes and revisions in 2016 be the #1 priority, over the annual hardware upgrade.

As far as iPhones go, I'm only curious about the rumored dual camera model of the iPhone 7+ as I'm quite happy with my 6s+.

Otherwise, I'll keep my eyes on the Note 6 (can't go back to a smaller display and I really dislike the curved display on the Galaxy Edge models) and the next large display Nexus model as I find them to be the only other hardware in the same league as iPhones with remotely comparable customer support.

It's funny... each year I say, no way they can excite me again this year to upgrade. For sure I'll keep my current device that is working amazingly. This time I'll make it to two years for real.

And yet, here I am, anticipating which 2016 phone to get. :)

What are people's thoughts about the iPhone 7 rumors so far? As far as I've read, it looks like:

-The camera may get a dual camera and see other improvements. Sounds great. I'm sure as per Apple tradition, the camera will be great again. But for me, camera alone can no longer make me purchase an iPhone. The competition has caught up and arguably surpassed them. And will the regular model finally get OIS? The rumors go on to predict that only the iPhone 7 Plus variant will get the dual cameras. That will be annoying if true.

-In terms of design, it looks like they're losing some/all of the unsightly antennae lines. This gets a thumbs up from me if true. Sounds like it'll look more like a metal slab than ever. Either way, Apple design will eventually become iconic, no doubt.

-How about the thinness rumor? So thin that it might lose the 3.5 mm headphone jack. On one hand, I'm okay with this because I primarily use bluetooth earphones anyway. On the other hand, is this worth the sacrifice just to get the iPhone even thinner? Does the iPhone need to be that thin? The rumor goes on to say the iPhone 7 may come with dual speakers (firing downward?) if there is no more headphone There's a related rumor that the lightning connector will double as the proprietary headphone jack slot. Is this good? Another proprietary accessory? Are people going to be happy that all their Beats and other headphone accessories won't work anymore? Do people charge and use headphones at the same time? And what will the thinness mean for the battery size?

-An exciting rumor says that Apple is developing the technology for wireless charging by just being in the proximity of the charger, and not necessarily needing to be in contact of the charger. That won't come until iPhone 7S, most likely, though. But that's definitely cool.

-Waterproofing? Thumbs up if true. Never hurts to have.

-Has there been anything on software and what might be coming for iOS 10?

It's still early but those are the rumors so far, and they sound, in my opinion, only okay. Since this is a "design change" year, they'll probably save the big feature-upgrade for the S model in 2017.

I'm not sure how I feel about the phone getting thinner. I'm not sure how I feel about a potentially smaller battery. I'm sure Apple will keep the standard battery expectations via software, but what could it have been if they squeezed in a larger battery? Not sure I like that the regular model may be missing features (OIS, dual camera?). And what will iOS 10 bring? Will the starting model still have a measly 16GB?

As an Apple fan and a tech enthusiast, I'm always curious about the next iPhone. But, so far, not all the rumors sound very appetizing, but it's also early.

What's everyone else's thoughts so far?

Oh come on Tig Bitties, if the Note 6 does have 6GB Ram your head will explode at the thought of all those possibilities of hacking and eeking every ounce of performance out of it :D

The dual camera is what piques my interest the most so far--could be a big step forward in smartphone camera capabilities. I don't doubt it'll only be in a version of the 7+..Apple will want to differentiate it and I believe rumors are sourcing enough camera components for the entire iPhone 7 production line isn't feasible (though I could be imagining this last part ;)). As far as OIS in the iPhone 7...it better have it.

-In terms of design, it looks like they're losing some/all of the unsightly antennae lines. This gets a thumbs up from me if true. Sounds like it'll look more like a metal slab than ever. Either way, Apple design will eventually become iconic, no doubt.

The render posted last week (I believe) with the antennae lines moved to the top and bottom looks nice. The current design never bothered me but I can certainly agree that it wasn't the best look aesthetically and the rumored new design is an improvement...as long as reception doesn't suffer.

Is this good? Another proprietary accessory? Are people going to be happy that all their Beats and other headphone accessories won't work anymore? Do people charge and use headphones at the same time? And what will the thinness mean for the battery size?

For me this is all about a balance between thinness and battery performance. Provide me with all day battery life with moderate to heavy usage in a thinner package, great. Just don't compromise battery performance for the sake of making it even thinner.

I'm ambivalent about removal of the standard headphone jack---honestly can't remember the last time I actually plugged in headphones. I understand why others may not be happy with this change but regardless when it's finally done, somebody will be upset. If you're going to do it, then just do it and be done with it. As with the change to the Lightning connector from the old 30-pin connector, people will get over it.

-An exciting rumor says that Apple is developing the technology for wireless charging by just being in the proximity of the charger, and not necessarily needing to be in contact of the charger. That won't come until iPhone 7S, most likely, though. But that's definitely cool.

The prospects of this certainly sounds cool but we won't see this for a while.

-Waterproofing? Thumbs up if true. Never hurts to have.

No downside here...really hope it's true.

-Has there been anything on software and what might be coming for iOS 10?

Nothing that I recall seeing.

It's still early but those are the rumors so far, and they sound, in my opinion, only okay. Since this is a "design change" year, they'll probably save the big feature-upgrade for the S model in 2017.

It's still pretty early so I take everything I hear at this point with a grain of salt. I've mentioned before though that I'm as happy with the 6s+ as I've been with any phone and for the first time, may actually skip purchasing a generation of the iPhone, not because I think Apple is selling us short but rather I don't find holes in my personal use case that need filing by an upgrade.

Not really interested in the iphone 7 personally

waterproofing is great

losing the headphone jack is a downgrade IMO, dont care about any digital audio codec / whatever advancements they make to compensate. I dont see any practical reason for this aside from pushing people towards lightning accessories, lightning already supports audio out so I dont get what the big deal is even to begin with. Its kind of like removing dvd from the imac, it has room for it and doesnt hurt the product in any way, but it is just removed. I suppose there is the marketing / image angle to make people feel like devices with audio jacks are old and un-cool

camera advancements are nice (the nonplus 6S should have OIS right now), but I will not upgrade until there is a sizable increase in performance, ram amount, and hopefully battery life.

I would say it is more of a sense of satisfaction with the 6S versus dissatisfaction with the 7 rumors. I cant imagine they come up with anything that will be enough to push though. The hardware is mostly hidden by my apple leather case, so the design refresh is pretty moot for me too
