Well my late 2009 iMac was getting hard to handle so ordered this:
  • 1 TB SSD‑opslag
  • Radeon Pro 580X met 8 GB GDDR5-geheugen
  • 3,7‑GHz 6‑core Intel Core i5-processor van de 9e generatie, Turbo Boost tot 4,6 GHz
  • 8 GB 2666‑MHz DDR4‑geheugen
Will update Ram myself, of course. Wanted the i9 but my credit card had a max, thankfully.

I just ordered a 2019 27" iMac: 3.1GHz i5, 2TB Fusion drive, plus AppleCare on a military discount. All I have to do now is to buy the correct RAM modules. This iMac will replace a 21" early 2011 iMac/1TB SSD that I use for photo editing (standalone CS6 and the NIK software package). I have been backing this iMac to a USB-2 hard drive using Time Machine, with the hope of migrating all my apps and files to the new iMac. Once the warranty is over with, I will replace the Fusion drive with a 2TB SSD.

Mine order 10 days ago:
- i9 27"
- 8gb RAM (will buy later 128 Gb)
- 512 SD
- GPU Radeon PRO 580X (500CHF for Vega is not justified for me)
- extended keyboard + magic mouse + trackpad

Use for: general purpose, photography, virtual machine and for relax!

Thanks for sharing your lines of thought guys, I'm still not finally decided on both the CPU and GPU question, so this really helps.

Just FYI, the i5 and the i9 both have a TDP of 95W, so the heat produced might be quite similar, as Apple seems to be restricting the maximum power allocated to the CPU. I don't know about the i5, but the i9 even seems to be restricted to somewhat around 85W from what I've seen in the video reviews. Anyway, I think your reasoning regarding Logic seems valid. Makes me think if I really "need" that i9 I've pretty much decided on, but then I also do a lot of photo editing (more than using Logic and Ableton).

Are you somewhere in northern Europe (your pseudonym sounds like that to me ;))? Amazon Germany just dropped the price of the 32GB RAM modules to 189€ (Crucial CT2K16G4SFD8266, 2x16GB kit) today (was around 215€), maybe you could order from them.

Now I ordered the RAM before I even ordered the iMac... :D

Same thinking here. Although the big unknown factors here are if Apple will move to ARM processors, and how much of a speed bump will come from Intel moving to 10nm CPUs. My new iMac is supposed to last me 8 years (at least) and I fear if I go for what would be sufficient today, I might want to upgrade again too soon. Still, even today's base model is a power house compared to the 2011 MBP I'm working on today, and which for most tasks is perfectly fine and fast enough, if I'm honest.

Hey ,Im sorry if I'm highjacking the post but it looks there are some people that do gaming on their mac here and I would love to hear some tips -

I just upgraded to the 27 I9 iMac ,mostly for my business but as finally i have a strong machine (I had a 2011 mac until now ) I would love to play some games on it instead of my PS4 ,the main game will be a FPS Rainbow six siege .
I want to to buy an external drive for bootcamp ,saw some videos but afraid to mess things up so I'l be grateful if someone can explain to me the steps how to make this done and how it actually work afterwards as I never used boot camp. Is there any practically drive you recommend ?Does it have to be SSD?
Thank you an advance !

I finally pulled the trigger on the highest of three specification ranges for the 27-inch iMac. 3.7ghz i5 9600K, 8gb of RAM, 580X GPU and a 1TB SSD. This set up is fast enough for me and is $1000 less expensive than if I went with the i9 and Vega GPU.

I've already ordered a 64gb RAM set from OWC. I could have gone with Crucial and others are reporting that they're already using Crucial memory with no problems in the iMac 19.1. But OWC seems much more sure about compatibility on their website and will allow me to get a rebate on the 8gb of OEM RAM.

Both brands have a lot of support here along with lifetime warranties.

How are you getting a rebate? does that mean money back?

My i9 arrived today, after a day in Cologne and two in the East Midlands. I fitted +32gb of Crucial Ram to make a 40gb, 2tb fusion-drive machine. On geek bench 4 it scored 6479 single core and 34721 multicore. Next step is installing Lightroom and Photoshop CC ... :)

I finally placed my order today - went with 27"/i9/Vega/1TB SSD, with DIY upgrade to 40GB RAM. I decided I'll use my iPhone (6) and iPad (Air 1) for another 1-2 years, drive my car for another 10.000km and go with the top configuration, hopefully to be able to squeeze 8-10 years out of this machine. Am not planning to get an eGPU at any point, so I figured I might spend the same money on the i9/Vega upgrade. Might be a bit of an overkill for my current needs, but who knows where the wind'll blow in 5 years? :D

Thanks to everybody who contributed to the various "which iMac to get?" and "580X vs. Vega" discussions, especially @macduke, @Honumaui, @Kaelis and @Colonel Blimp, who helped me come to my decision.

Can't wait to try it out :)

cool post back also try to go to that C1 thread and post your findings !!!! that would really help a lot of folks there

Should be a hell of a machine. Makes me feel "inadequate" with my i5 580x. Kind of like when I'm out with my push mower and the neighbor's wife is on a big tractor mower and he's wielding his chainsaw. Good luck with it.

As I type this, I’m having to endure the hell of listening to the mowing and blowing of so-called “gardeners” on my street. I honor and salute you for continuing to use a push mower!

Will do-curious about how it will compare to the 3:45 my 2011 MBP needs for the export... :D

LOL! Fortunately, Apple lives and breathes understatement, you don't see what's under the hood on the outside of the iMac... ;) Maybe I should put an "i9 inside" sticker on the bezel to impress the neighbors? :p

Well, it surely trains the body, so I'd call it a win-win situation! Add a good ol' rake instead of these damn blowers, and one will look like Arnold in no time.

I still can’t believe the speed I’m getting on the internal SSD 2TB drive.
