21.5 inch model. Maxed out with 1TB SSD, Vega 20 graphics, 32 his of RAM, and the i7 processor. Couldn't be happier.

Not to derail this thread intentionally but X Plane?! I am a long time Flight Simulator enthusiast (dating back to FS1 on DOS), buying this (my first modern Mac) had me wondering about flight sims... gonna check out X Plane!

X-Plane is the only choice on the Mac right now. Unfortunately a lot of the add-ones are for the pc version only. However that situation seems to be changing..

Ordered from Expercom on the 15th and is in process.

IMac arrived today !!

No notice from Expercom. I kept logging in to see if it shipped, but nothing, then it arrived today...Not complaining though.

It came via DHL:

This looks like pretty good service, it was in LA THIS MORNING, gets to Phoenix at 8am, they put it on a truck and it gets here at Noon !! Doesn't get any better then that. Didn't pay for any expedited shipping.

AWESOME! I'm still setting mine up and learning the nuances of my new machine and it's cool yours showed up too, fun to have a new system. =D

Interesting because I too ordered from Expercom, back on 5/15, and up until late yesterday it was just listed as "processing".

About 4pm CT yesterday I got an email from Expercom with shipping info, but I was surprised/dissapointed when it said it was arriving "USPS and 7-10 Day ground". I'd selected 3-6 Day FedEx ground, but didn't pay. When I clicked the link there was nothing on the USPS site, so I called Expercom.
  • I was told the number was actually a DHL number (even though the link sent was clearly USPS).
  • So, I tracked it on DHL, where I got an odd result.
  • A shipment from China to Oak Park, IL (?) as the final destination (I'm in Texas).
  • Call back to Expercom resulted in much confusion on their part
  • It was going DHL from China, but no idea why it was going to Oak Park, IL
  • Could not explain the USPS link or the change in delivery, they wondered if the order had been "changed"
  • Told they would "investigate" but admitted with the holiday it would likely be Tuesday

Needless to say, I'm a bit frustrated

Hello everyone!

I’m new in the forum and I’m planning on buying a 2019 iMac as well, I’ve read the entire thread but to be honest I’m not “tech-savvy” and I have way more dilemmas than before...

I used to have an iMac 21.5’’ Late 2015 4K Retina 3.1GHz quad-core i5 Intel Iris Pro 6200 with only 8GB of RAM 1TB HDD. Now, I bought this iMac thinking I had the best machine in the world since I didn’t do my research correctly and I found out later on that I need more RAM and an SSD to live, I don’t want to make the same mistakes so that’s why I’m here.

I’m a Graphic Designer, I usually use PS (not RAW or anything crazy), XD, Ai and ID, sometimes Dimension CC. I do need more than one program at the same time so I know I’m getting a 27’’ this time so I can upgrade the RAM whenever I want. In the future I would like to start doing some 3D rendering (mostly to do like mockups of products) and video editing (motion graphics) and maybe just maybe VR, simple things for my job, not movies or 4K stuff. Also, I’m starting to learn code to be a web developer.

I was super sure I was going to get the high end iMac with i5 and the 580X, but after reading so many comments I’m unsure if I should get the i9 (not the Vega, my budget won’t allow it), or if I should even choose the base or mid model since if I do 3D or video editing it won’t be all the time. My biggest problem with the iMac I had was the RAM and the storage (which I sort of fix with an external ssd to use as startup disk), I can’t complain of the rest, it was a good machine it just didn’t let me have more than one program at the same time or else it would restart itself.

Anyway, I’m sorry for making this so long and I’ll appreciate if you can help me decide, and thank you so much for reading!

@D4walker I have the i9 and Vega 48 and my experience with them for a short time tells me you're likely going to want to not get the i9 and get the Vega 48.

Between the two the i9 causes the internal fan to kick on sooner when under load. The Vega is going to be faster than the 580X and I'd wager quite a bit cooler. For 3D rendering the Vega is also likely going to be considerably more useful than the i9.

If the Vega 48 without the i9 is in your budget, I'd say get it. If not, the base i5/580X isn't going to be slow.

(disclaimer, while I am not recommending the i9 for you, I love having one for working with Logic Pro and compiling code, it's not that it is a bad option)

I would love to get the i9/Vega combo as well, but it really is way beyond my budget, the Vega alone is also more expensive than the i9 that’s why I can’t consider it right now. Also I don’t think I’ll use that much 3D, at least not for video but for mockups which I’m guessing doesn’t need as much power? I’m not sure on that. The i5/580X was my first choice, I’m just not sure if it my be overkill for my intended uses, so that’s why I’m so unsure, it’s also a lot of money...

But it does help me a lot to decide to stick with the i5, I just need to decide the graphics between the Radeon choices lol, thank you for your recommendation, I really appreciate it!

Photography, light design, light web dev use, NO VIDEO RENDER.

Apple 27" iMac Retina 5K Display (2019)
  • 3.7GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz
  • 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory (to add 32GB later)
  • Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8GB of HBM2 memory
  • 512GB SSD storage (already have 4TB 2.5" SSD externally)
I want to see how cooler this combo would be, then I'll swap my PC build i7-9700K in and see if it's compatible and its thermal.

Then maybe I'll sell the i5-9600K and get a i9-9900K Delid with Liquid Metal in there :D

There is increasing evidence that the Vega 48 runs cooler than the 580X. This will allow the i5 to operate nearly at its full potential. In my mind the combination i5/Vega 48/SSD 512 GB is the ideal one (with third-party RAM). Expensive, yes, but considerably less than other options and with much potential for many years.

Otherwise, with the i5/580X/SSD 512 GB you should also be fine. Careful only to not make the mistake to buy extra RAM from Apple.

Yes please. This is exactly the configuration I am considering now, so any input from you when you get yours is valuable.

Out of the box, it's significantly cooler already. For what I do which there isn't a deadline, I don't mind a longer render time for a cooler machine. I won't be receiving mine for like another month, but if you're in a rush, really consider this configuration, you can always pop it open and put in possibly 9700K or 9900K for almost the upgrade cost at Apple then sell or reuse the 9600K elsewhere.

9700K vs 9900K temperatures are similar idle, under full load, obviously the 9900K runs hotter.

the i9 operates in the lower range of it's specified frequency potential, whereas the i5 operates within the top end, contrary to what Apple claims. Though, the i9 sports 16 threads, whereas the i5 has 6.

In a 21C room (71F) I am running a time machine backup and playing the game Surviving Mars. CPU and GPU temps hover around ~78c, CPU speed is around 4.6GHZ, and fan speed is around 1400RPM.

This is on an i9/Vega system with the game running for several hours so far.

edit: Maxing the cpu only I'm seeing a temp of 92c, speed of 4ghz, and 1550rpm from the fan.
edit2: Forcing the fan to 2700rpm and re-running the cpu test the speed stays at 4ghz but the temps drop to 80c. This confirms what I'd read before buying this machine about it not being a temperature throttle but rather a setting or power limitation set by Apple.

Many of here have purchased their beloved machine and I also on the decide line.
Was considering the high-end model but not bump up to the i9 and Vega, just keep the original i5 & 580X.
My usage is pretty simple since I'm not using Mac for mainly work but for relaxing most.

Here are my usages:
a)Work: iWork, Office, Google document
b)Entertainment: YouTube, Twitch, Netflix(probably), Spotify
c)Social Network: Facebook, Instagram, Line, Twitter.
These could cover almost 90% of my daily usage.

And since these are all low-demand softwares, I start thinking maybe the low-end model with 8th gen-i5 & 570X is already enough to me, but also seeing the thoughts of "Preparing for future usage".

Could you give me some opinions to help me decide?
Any advice and thoughts are helpful and appreciated.
Thanks!

@lishaoalox Based on your usages I'd say your decision for the i5/580X is overkill for _today's_ needs, but future proofs your ability to do those things long into the future. Just make sure you get the SSD.

@lishaoalox Looking at your usage you don't need i9 & Vega. I would recommend getting the base 27" and upgrade the Fusion Drive to an SSD (at least 512GB if you can). You can upgrade the RAM yourself later. Otherwise, you will be very happy with i5/580X. I have been using my new iMac for a few weeks now, it is an amazing AIO computer!

Ordered my first iMac yesterday and went with the base model + 512GB SSD upgrade. Should be sufficient, since I am already using a MacBook Pro 2018 for work, which feels blazing fast as well to me

Lowest base 27", will add 32gb memory and 1tb MLC ssd myself. Unless you do heavy video editing or play games regularly there is no justification to get higher configurations. RAM and SSD are the key to excellent all around performance. CPUs and GPUs are so powerful nowadays that even lowly ones are fast enough for me (I do lots of development, run VMs, Docker etc.)

Hey! I wanted to ask you both that actually chose the base model, how are you doing with your iMac? I’m also thinking about going with the base model, I want the high-end but my budget is very tight and I think I’d rather save for more RAM. I’m a designer but I’m trying to get more in the development world.

@tabilo what do you usually do with your iMac if you don’t mind me asking?

@codernova Thanks for your advice! I will definitely go with the SSD and upgrade the RAM to about 16~24G, 40 or 64G is just overwhelming all my usage I suppose.
I also thinking that the 9th-gen i5/580X combination is overkill for my usage now and maybe the 8th-gen i5 570X one is also overkill for the usage listed above, since I sometimes use my 2015 Early MBA 11" w/ 4G RAM, it could also handle most of the jobs.

Now I'm wondering if I should pay more for the future proofs.
One thought is that, the money I pay more for the future proofs now, might be able to buy even more power in the age I need to replace this model cause it can't handle the usage anymore.

Also considering if the usage I listed above would demand for more power in the coming years. (But probably not I guess, since they all are not the power-needed softwares.)
Shall I expect the i5/580X model makes a significant difference when compare with the i5/570X one for my usage?

@henry72 Thanks for the opinions! I saw your post before since I was considering the totally same configuration with yours (even now). I will go for SSD but probably for 256G only since I don't really need that much.
Also, once I bump up to the 512G SSD, the i5/580X model seems to be a more ideal option, since it offers better cost/performance value.
Glad to hear that you're very happy with your new iMac, that also gives me some confidence!

I have been happier with my computer purchases when I stretch for the “overkill” at them moments I purchase. I find that the machine lasts me MUCH longer than if I’d gone with a mid tier machine.

My last PC upgrade was 4 years ago for gaming and that hardware is still satisfying my needs, max details, high resolution, etc. still.

In the past I tried saving money by going mid grade and usually those machines barely satisfy me in the short term and need to be replaced earlier.

My point is that I think you’ll be happier and spend less money in the long term by getting the best you can afford at the time of purchase.

Here I agree 100%. This is what I do..always and with many products.

Likewise, "buying the most spec'd out version of whatever Apple product you could afford at the time of purchase" has always been my mantra.

That said this time I did not do that. I did the 9th Gen i5/580X simply because I know my type of usage, along with the reality larger changes to the iMac as a model as soon forthcoming - made it less necessary for me to do my normal thing.

I'm supposed to get my new one today/tomorrow - so I think I'll find out in short order if I regret going against my own advice.

My 27" i5 9600k/Vega/1TB SSD iMac finally arrived today. When I ordered from Apple there wasn't an $8 expedited shipping option for some reason so I had to have it shipped with standard. Took 9 days to be delivered due to the holiday weekend.

DHL sent Expercom the wrong shipping number for my order, so up until a few hours ago, I was of the impression mine had been delivered and signed for in a different state. Now I'm told my order is here, in Dallas, but "on hold" but can't explain why. I ordered on 5/15.
