This is just evolution of convergence. First it was the laptop replacing desktop to hybrid replacing laptop and tablet. Now, we're at phone that can replace laptop/desktop (Note 9, Mate 20 series) or new hybrid that can replace laptop/tablet and phone (Windows 10 on ARM always-on devices).
You need to realise that for them to understand all this, Apple must do it, then it will all make sense to them

For now, we can enjoy our devices that allow a full desktop experience without having to lug around a laptop or a tablet everywhere :)

It's going to be quite a while before iOS does this if ever, considering even the iPad Pro is pretty handicapped due to it.

What convergence looks like to me is windows running on an ipad pro. ios when i want it and windows when I need it.

That would be nirvana and will also never happen. Since that won't happen my surface pro fills the void. This DEX stuff will always be a niche product until a note runs windows in an acceptable fashion. That might change the game.

Exactly, linux. Except for some on-off things I use linux/ubuntu for, heavy lifting I need windows.

Who is talking about windows here?

That is not going to happen with iPhone. Maybe it can happen with Galaxy.

In the meantime Galaxy have DEX. Even if you are not running Linux, using Android in desktop mode with a monitor has its use cases.

At this moment DEX running Linux is closest you can get to a desktop experience on a mobile phone. To developers, this maybe a viable option.

Windows is many of the world's companies run on. This is, to me, as I pointed out not very useful as a work application. IMO, more people would find this convergence useful if it ran windows.

DEX is a niche product. Maybe viable for some developers, but in my case, instead of extra monitors and keyboard a SP is my go to for the reasons stated previously.

For developers many IDEs programming tools are available on both windows and Linux. Unless you are developing for windows specifically. So for them it is viable.

Your SP costs money :) And it is a hassle to to lug it around.

I can just bring only a hdmi-usb c cable and it is good to go. Plug my note 9 in to a TV or monitor and use the stylus or phone screen as mouse plus have a big virtual keyboard on the entire screen of the phone.

Maybe for small developers, which brings back it’s a niche tool. But there is no lug with the SP, and I have the real thing with a core i7 processor, loads of memory and the speed. To each their own use case.

Don't just bring your SP but also your Mac, your iPad, apple tv and host of adapters/accessories along as well.

To each their own use case. :)

Why do I need my mac and SP, ATV and everything else? I have no use case for those concurrently. Each has their place for the right tool at the right time.:)

However, it occurs to me if I need all that stuff you might as well bring your arsenal ‘cause it’s clear DEX ain’t cutting it.:)

It’s kinda neat. I just tried it myself on my Pixel 3.

Curious to see if Apple adds this, or, a service becomes available for their devices. IOS already allows all screening / handling applications. Since iOS too has built in (offline) speech recognition, it may be possible for a dev to mimic this feature.

Would be better if it was free and native though! I don’t like any of the Call screening apps I tried. Just didn’t feel that clean.

Absolutely brilliant feature this, I am hoping more OEMs implement it. I had long appreciated Samsungs Caller ID and Blocking features, but Google have taken this to the next level.

I'm shopping for new car insurance and now it's clear that my details have been sent out as shopping, so I am getting random cold calls from insurers urrgh, let's not even talk about how many insurance ads I am seeing on my FB feed.

Install whatever you want on there without jail breaking. I already knew this but I’ve been reminded of this as I bought a kindle fire HD tablet as it was on sale for Black Friday. Was able to get the play store on there in less than 5 minutes and this is even a forked version of android.

All very good for £50 and it does show mode too.

It’s take time of the year when Apple checks off Android users, “Why haven’t I switched to iOS yet checklist” lol.

iTunes was a big reason some didn’t switch to iOS. That list gets smaller by the year. Lol.
