A one-off playlist that I set up a long time ago, “The Chris vs. Joe Question” with nothing in it but two tracks, by Coldplay and by Joe Satriani, respectively: “Viva la Vida” and “If I Could Fly”.

The question, of course, referred to the lawsuit back when Satriani sued Coldplay for lifting the motif of his guitar piece for use in the band’s song. Coldplay countered that they’d never heard the song and that the motif “lacked originality”...

The case was ultimately dismissed due to apparently having been settled out of court, so I guess we may never know whether rock’s penchant for often limiting itself to Western tonal foundations, short themes and foursquare beats naturally lends itself to coincidental melodic similarities, or whether somebody at Coldplay had in fact heard the Satriani work sometime and later accidentally or otherwise borrowed an idea.

Either way it’s fun to listen to the two tracks back to back once in awhile, and see how very differently the two artists had developed a very similar motif.

The thing is, my mission this evening is to clean up the array of old playlists in one of my iTunes libraries. I think I’m not doing too well there so far LOL.

A similar lawsuit engulfed - and ultimately destroyed - the excellent British band "The Verve" over their song "Bitter Sweet Symphony", the first track of their album "Urban Hymns".

(A track I loved, by the way, and had already bought as a CD single).

The lawsuit (brought by former managers of the Rolling Stones) that the dog plagiarised the Rolling Atones track "The Last Time" (an orchestral version had been arranged in the 70s). Rather than fight - and lose - under the restrictive copyright laws, The Verve signed over 100% of the royalties (the song had done exceptionally well) to the Rolling Stones, leading to the crack that this was "the best an most successful new song the Rolling Stones had written in over twenty years."

lol. i know, i know.

seems to have garnered more critical acclaim over time.

i love it.

Well, yes, agreed. This is true.

In terms of the critical acclaim traditionally accorded to The Beatles, Mr McCartney always suffered by contrast to that accorded to John Lennon, whereas, in the words of Ringo, he and George Harrison were always regarded 'as economy class Beatles".

I am now watching the rain and listening to "Last Time Forever" a lovely song from Squeeze.

George was bloody brilliant; it's still hard to believe people had this idea of his work.

Have been listening to The Iguanas and two of their albums, "Juarez", and "The Iguanas", The Friends of Dean Martinez with "A Place In The Sun", and Danger Mouse with "Dark Night Of The Soul."

Interesting what is maladaptive dreaming?

Essentially it is for me extreme daydreaming that feels very realistic. I become a bit immersed into it as if I'm living it. It's helpful to me as it's one of the only ways I can stop my anxiety.

I do have to reign it in though sometimes as it can last for hours, even a whole day.

Eeek. Sounds like it offers the option to forget to come back in time to pay the rent or whatever. Think I don't need to encourage that with my music picks. At least in the morning I have to stick more with a range of genres that have some wakeup call to them. Bach and some blues guitar are what's on my iPod upstairs. Otherwise at least in winter I'd probably roll out of bed around noon.
