Giving this a whirl on YouTube and deciding whether to indulge in the audiophile release. I'm so behind on my stacks of not-wax, but there're so many holes need plugging, so much silence in need of filling...

Going back in time, The Beatles' Abbey Road.

My favorite covers of a song from that album, even if it sacrifices the original's deft ebullience. Besides some omitted lines (if I recall correctly) my only wish is that the song didn't fade out so soon. I love that piano and want more.

I also like Nick Cave's. It's gloom makes an intriguing counterpoint to the hopeful lyric. As if the earliest stage of escaping an all-consuming gloom.

Of course, at The Concert for George one year after Harrison's passing, it was performed by Joe Brown, a friend of his. I think it best captures the original feeling of the song.

And while I'm at it, he also closed the show with a splendid, light and heartfelt ukulele-driven take on "I'll See You in My Dreams" that has extracted a tear or two from me when revisiting this concert.

I'm in the mood for some "folk" music, and was wondering if anyone can recommend some music with guitars, harmonicas, violins? (Kind of like the Due South theme by Jay Semko)

Cheers

That particular song was the theme tune to the comedy series "Father Ted", by the way.

How much do I love that song?

The entire album (Casanova by The Divine Comedy, who is really an artist named Neil Hannon) is quite lovely, too, but the actual track is called "Songs of Love".

"feck.drink."

Actually - the story itself is long and complicated - but I had occasion around twenty years ago to spend a full day with the actor Frank Kelly (Fr Jack) in connection with something entirely different - I needed his permission to use some cartoons his father had drawn - his father - (C. E. D. Kelly) had been the editor, owner, cartoonist, writer and everything else of a publication called Dublin Opinion - and he was an absolute gentleman and couldn't have been more gracious, helpful, welcoming, warm and supportive. A lovely man, and a cultured one, too.

A qualified barrister and a fluent French speaker, he and his wife treated me to lunch in their home and the discussion around the lunch table - plays, theatre, writing, some TV series, politics, culture, books, history, travel, language, - and so on - was wonderful. A day the memory of which I treasure.
