Vinyl? Wow. Well done….

Well, all that 80s stuff came in vinyl, and I rather liked some of the British styled reggae of that era. And, needless to say, have it in vinyl...

Mainly 7" singles...... I play them at nights and stuff like that occasionally (although I normally dj UK garage, bassline, jungle - digitally as I can't afford vinyl for that too).

Reggae needs to be vinyl though, especially the older stuff, gotta love that little crackliness..... especially when you've got something from the 60's. There's a few english bands I've liked reggae wise, ASWAD I'm quite keen on, and we have some pretty cool dub studios that are still going on over here.

I'd love a few recommendations, old and new.

A few from a lovely Latino group called Los Panchos.

Latin style music from the 1940s. Apparently, they were formed in New York in the 1940s, (one of the original trio came from Puerto Rico, and the other two from Mexico).

I have several of their albums, and they are lovely, easy classy listening. I have just listened to their album "Recuerdos", and then moved on to their album "Trio Los Panchos Con Mariachi".

Some of their songs are quite well known, - they were very famous and popular in the 1940s - as in, you will realise that you may have heard this song sometime in your life - perhaps on an obscure radio station where the presenters like to play classy, strange and esoteric music.

But their songs "Cu cu rru cu cu Paloma", "La Malaguena", and "La Bamba" are pretty well known, as are a host of others. In fact, as I write this, "La Malaguena" is playing right now

Listening to the 'Best of Foo Fighters', one of my grandson's favorites.

Several albums from Los Panchos playing on my iTunes this evening: "Recuerdos", "Trio Los Panchos Con Mariachi", "20 Exitos De Oro De Los Panchos", "50 Años","20 Exitos De Oro De Los Panchos - Vol 3"….

"The Far-North folk" playlist on Spotify. Introduced me to some great bands like First Aid Kit.... And I thought I hated modern music!

I spent some times yesterday evening listening to that sort of 'cool' Sixties instrumental sound, a few by John Barry, (including the theme for 'Orson Welles' Great Mysteries'), Alan Hawkshaw, and some from Paddy Kingsland.

Well, tonight, I have been listening to a number of tracks.

There was the epic 'symphonic poem' Ma Vlast by Bedrich Smetana. This was followed - in due course - by the soundtrack to the fantastic TV series 'Cosmos', - with the wonderful inspirational and idealistic Carl Sagan - which featured awesome music by Vangelis.

Another soundtrack followed: 'Goodbye Lenin' (a lovely but bittersweet account of the last days and after of the old DDR) with wonderfully appropriate music by Yann Tiersen.

And the, there were The Delfonics, with naturally enough, - among others - a terrific piece called 'The Delfonics Theme'.

Finally something remotely resembling what summer supposed to feel like. Gotta celebrate.

What a lovely picture; I remember playing those 45s; the old singles cam win that format and you had to adjust the speed on the turntable to 45 (turns per minute), when you wanted to play them.

And yes, I meticulously and methodically timed it - just to make sure that it did what it said it was supposed to do - with the seconds hand of my watch, when I was a kid…..

Going to go a different way today. Still Listening to a musician, but not as we'd expect them.

A few months ago, George Clinton (Parliament, Funkadelic, P-Funk All-Stars) made an appearance on NPR's news quiz show Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!. The segment he was on, was called Not My Job, where they quiz celebrities on something they know absolutely nothing about. At the time, Clinton had just released a memoir called (and I kid you not), Brothers Be, Yo Like George Ain't That Funking Kind Of Hard On You?.

It had me looking through his entire catalog (I only really heard of him via Atomic Dog in 1984), and realizing that he had a near 15 year story and concept going on through each of his albums. As far concept go, I don't know of any other band that kept a storyline going in their catalog that long. It's one of those things they should turn into a book.

Anyway, hearing what he had to say and do was just hilarious. The show is great all around, but Clinton comes in at the 20:00 mark. Enjoy!

EDIT: Here's a link to the transcript.

Well, given the night that it is - that 'Leap Second' (and I will happily admit to an utter fascination with Time, and how it has been marked and its passing noted and defined), I am currently listening to the song 'Time' by Pink Floyd, from one of the greatest albums ever released - The Dark Side oF The Moon.

Listening to Weezer's album "Everything Will Be Alright In The End". Takes me back to listening to Weezer as a teenager. In keeping with the time sentiments, tonight seems to have been one long stroll down memory lane.

Discovering Apple music - like a huge buffet at the moment between my own music (trying out the new UI which is a bit complex but which I like) and the streaming and radio options.
