What are you listening to? Part III

Let me guess; that one is for me. Bravo.

Anyway, it is a piece I love, and one which a Dutch friend/colleague (who had known little of classical music before he discovered this piece) also grew to love, and played incessantly, in sometimes strange and unsettling settings.

These days, when I hear it (or listen to it), I hear it with different ears, ears enhanced by richly and intensely lived experience. Let's just say, it brings back vivid and compelling memories.

But what can I say? I'm listening to your version as I write (a bit different to mine, and different again to that endlessly played by my Dutch friend when driving around a particular urban space in his car…)

Well, I realized I hadn't listened to it in a while so I went for it and then decided to share.

Christmas music starts playing here in the mall by September. Which means I get to hear "Last Christmas" by Wham! about every hour for the next three months. I think Filipinos generally have good taste in music esp love songs or anything poppy. It is a karaoke culture. I was introduced to some obscure 80's new wave thanks to them. But they wear out any pop song. They still play two year old songs at least 100x on the radio. They even used "All Of Me" by John Legend for a title of a teleserye (soap opera). How original! And it plays all the time in the episode with the same repetitive storylines. She's emo. He cheated on her. Pinoys have lazy creativity. They just ripoff Americans and South Koreans.

My favorite song of this decade is still 2013's "Shot At The Night" by The Killers. The band isn't as big here locally which means its luster won't wear out on my me from the radio or TV shows. But I say my interest in all of music has waned. I get bored easily from it after a few days. I rarely use headphones on my phone anymore but 10 years ago, you usually saw me listening to my iPod with it. Movies, video games, and books are more interesting to me to kill time than music right now. Alot of new songs like newer movies have very little replay value. It isn't as cool as the 80's and early 90's.

A CD that arrived in the post today which is by the stunning group Per Kelt (I have heard them live, and they describe themselves as falling under the the rubric of 'Medieval Celtic Speed Folk'). This album comes with the intriguing title 'Dowry Of A Troll Woman', and it is predictably excellent.

Now, as it happens, I also have their earlier album 'Musica Mardania', (oft played on my iPod) which I think superb.

Fav - Generally all of it including from Mötley Crüe and New Order but my fav scene is when you hear "( I Just) Died In My Arms" by Cutting Crew and watching Adam (John Cusack) smoke a bong, shroom, and do cocaine. I wasn't into that song before like I was for something like "Bizarre Love Triangle." That scene helped me enjoy it.

Fav - "She Came On".. Fav montage in it. I also liked "I Saw The Light" with my second fav montage. I enjoy Farrelly montages. It might be a lazy way but it speeds up the story and makes me enjoy the music used.

Fav - Whatever song the nerds did. Love Poindexter's violin in the first one. I also liked the "Thriller" scene in Part 1.

Fav - "Sweet Freedom" (love the music vid)

Rush Hour 3
Fav - "Closer I Get to You" duet w/ Jackie Chan sitting on a swing! It topped Rush Hour 2's and I love that MJ song!

Fav - Of course the Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" with the boombox over the head scene.

Fav - "Too Young" from Phoenix but the songs from Ivy were good too. The Sheryl Crow song isn't as good when you listen to it without the scene.

A good week for music.

Yesterday, a CD by the excellent medieval, [European & Celtic] folk, fusion, group Per Kelt - arrived and today's post has brought a CD from the outstanding Canadian klezmer group, Finjan. Looking forward to listening to it later this evening.

Lots of current Bolt Thrower on a loop. Their drummer passed away suddenly on 9/14. I went to their website earlier that day and was thinking about them big time ever since, I didn't know about "Kiddie" until this morning. I'd never met him despite being friends with the band for many years.

Elsewhere, on these fora, it was suggested - in a somewhat offensive manner, that cultivated by devotees of deluded conspiracy theories - that I might be, perhaps, Jewish.

Entirely coincidentally, a week or so earlier, I had ordered a CD by the very talented Canadian klezmer group, Finjan. Anyway, this CD arrived earlier this week, and this is what I am listening to, just now. It is called 'Dancing On Water' - lovely listening.

It's been a long few days at work so I'm back on my thrash/hardcore/badboy whatever punk...(it's not hard to take me there east coast punk has a special place in heart I can't help that I'm and uptight MoFo)

These guys like most of the bands I listen to make me feel old. Their grey beards match my grey hair all us 80's and 90's punks are now fathers that just can't be taken seriously anymore were just clueless old dudes. We're not scary or offensive anymore with our grey hair and beer belly's even though our opinions have matured and hardened.

"Smoke and Mirrors" by The Magnetic Fields (go figure) which sounds like a Tubeway Army pastiche; I wish I'd made this connection before finding their actual cover of a Gary Numan song. The piece gives the impression that it's sung by an artificial narrator who questions the validity of interactions with real people—a familiar theme for Numan.

A charming and excellent CD which arrived in the post, (thank you Amazon, my preference would be to shop for such esoteric stuff in a bricks and mortar store that caters for a wide range of musical tastes).

The artist is Alfredo Rolando Ortiz, and the CD is entitled 'The South American Harp of Alfredo Rolando Ortiz Vol. 2'. Lovely, elegant and classy.

Ah, yes, now that you mention it, that name is, indeed, familiar. Actually, I have that album by Jean Michel Jarre (along with a few others, Oxygene was the first I got - as a LP, quite some time ago, when one of my brothers gave it to me as a present).

Actually, I quite like listening to that sort of music if I am on a long flight, or am writing something; it is nice - productive, yet not unsettling - background music.
