For the last hour, or so, I have been listening to a wonderful Turkish group called 'Café Anatolia' (I have around four of their CDs, all bought in Istanbul when passing through at various times). Basically, this is Turkish music with a modern sensibility. Lovely.

Well, just now, I am listening to the sublime 'Sanctus' and the electric 'Hymn Before Action' (that's ominous) from "The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace" by the wonderful Karl Jenkins.

Three years ago (well, Christmas Day in 2012) I was privileged to hear a stunning live interpretation of the 'Sanctus' by Karl Jenkins - the kind that sends shivers up your spine - at Christmas Mass.

As it happens, for a variety of reasons, I am not much of a church goer, but, as Henry IV (one of the most attractive monarchs ever to sit the throne of France) observed when abjuring his Huguenot faith - 'Paris is worth a Mass'. Well, I think Christmas Day is worth one, too.

However, since 2012, it has not been possible to attend such services, as my Mother - who suffers from advanced dementia - cannot be left alone, and it is, unfortunately, rather difficult, to get support on Christmas Day. Such is life.

Any place but here or there....
Lately I remember why I was such a huge fan of Bolt Thrower, love this song. Ex drummer Andy Whale is flying (and without the annoying triggers and such most extreme metal drummers use these days.)

I suspect I'll be repeating this for a bit before listening to War Master again.

The latest of They Might Be Giants' offerings, "Trouble Awful Devil Evil," which was released yesterday. I thought it was going to be humorous and was pleasantly surprised to find it earnest and understated.

Well, I am not familiar with the music, but, as someone who once taught medieval history, that is a terrific album cover.

Don't know the music, but again, what a lovely and striking album cover.

As an aside, one of the regrets one has about the demise of the old style music industry - CDs, vinyl LPs - is the passing of those glorious afternoons when you could spend hours (and I mean hours) flipping and riffling through racks of CDs and LPs in the old style music shops. Some of those album covers were gorgeous, absolute works of art in themselves, which worked even better if the music they housed was equally arresting.

Let me guess; that one is for me. Bravo.

Anyway, it is a piece I love, and one which a Dutch friend/colleague (who had known little of classical music before he discovered this piece) also grew to love, and played incessantly, in sometimes strange and unsettling settings.

These days, when I hear it (or listen to it), I hear it with different ears, ears enhanced by richly and intensely lived experience. Let's just say, it brings back vivid and compelling memories.

But what can I say? I'm listening to your version as I write (a bit different to mine, and different again to that endlessly played by my Dutch friend when driving around a particular urban space in his car…)
