Really trying to decide if one of these is worth it. I've heard a lot of good things from people about it, but I'm still on the fence. And they're $10 off right now too.

I love mine. I bought one of them when they first came out (I think they were around $89 at the time) and bought another one when they dropped to $49 (but I got $10 off since I ordered it with my 1st gen Dot).

I'm sure they'll be on sale either through the holidays, or at least again during the holidays, so I might pick one up. I'm starting to get stuff like Hue lights, so having something other than our iPhones to control it might be helpful.

We have Hues and other brands of switches around, too, and it makes the Echo a necessity for everyone to be able to control them.

I think you've convinced me. Even at the $49 price, it's still not bad. Guess I'll order one later this week after payday.

Careful as the Echo is rather terrible at anything other than dimming and turning off and on. It fails at scene selection and color choice to change the bulbs.

With that being said I still thoroughly enjoy my Echo even outside Hue for what it is and its a solid bluetooth speaker to boot.
Just temper your expectations in regards to Hue control.

I'm really interested in the Echo Dot but I don't have anything like Philips Hue or any content from Amazon (I do have a Prime membership though), is this thing completely useless for me?

Depends what you will want to utilize it for. For my case use it is as follows and maybe will help you (mine is located in the kitchen near my main living room and I have an Echo, not a Dot):

  • Adding things quickly and easy to a shopping list versus finding my phone and adding on there
  • Utilizing it for measuring when cooking in the kitchen
  • Listning to music very easily on Spotify and Pandora
  • Ordering special Alexa only deals on Amazon (got a smart plug and hue lights at significant discount)
  • My son loves interacting and asking it random knowledge based things and it is very good at recognizing his voice and answering
  • Controlling my Hue lights for on and off in the kitchen and kitchenette area when entering my home and hands are full
  • I love asking the morning news brief and getting news of the day in the mornings and also quick access to weather
I hope this helps and let me know if I can help you with anything else.

I use an app/skill called Yonomi. You can set up scenes for each color or name and it will make the bulbs whatever color you specify by saying "Alexa, turn on ____".

In a coffee shop.
An Astell & Kern MP3 player (among other things).

An Adeney Swaine Paternoster briefcase......

And, yes, a Bowers & Wilkins P9.....

All on my wishlist, and all unlikely to be fulfilled by anyone other than my good self.

MacBook Pro 13" with Touch Bar, 2.9GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB... :p (bit expensive, but it's Apple, so what do we expect?) But if I buy the 13" for $2199, then I might as well buy the base 15" with 512GB for $2599. Ah, decisions, decisions.... :p
I ordered a 15 inch and cancelled it. I am trying to get by with my 2011 MBP for another year. Not sure I can do it, but we shall see. :D

Would you think of going with a refurb from 2013, 2014, or 2015 instead?

You would then have the advantages of a new computer (in terms of warranties etc) at considerably less than you would expect to pay for a brand new model.

Moreover, you would not have to pay the price of (Apple) having to iron out the proverbial 'teething problems' that new technology inevitably comes compete with as a lot of this stuff only comes to light when it is tested in real life, and real world situations.

I have floated around the idea of getting the 2015. I will need to look for some side-by-side comparisons and decide. I would love the retina screen and the ability to hook it up to my 4k monitor, though (when compared to my 2011). This may be the one time I might prefer last year's model.

I read here - and elsewhere - about the rMB (and indeed, rMBP).

To me, the thing about the MBA is that - finally - and it did take several iterations - they made the perfect computer.

This is a fantastically reliable computer. For a long time, - until 2013 - the MBA had yet to live up to its promise, but once Apple gave it sufficient power, memory, reliability, and a fantastically improved battery life, the machine was unbeatable for anyone who needed something powerful and portable and who was constantly on the go.

To my mind, the rMB still needs a lot of improvement; I don't doubt that it will happen, - eventually - but it hasn't happened just yet.
