No longer a Garth Nix trilogy ...... now a pentalogy: Clariel (2014) and Goldenhand (2016) added.

Yes, I am perfectly aware of this and have read the two books in question.

However, when I make a gift of these books, it is the trilogy I give. If the trilogy meets with the approval of the recipients, they are free to add to their collection.

To my mind, the original trilogy is as close to fantasy perfection as it is possible to come.

Just got back from my local library's book sale. Here's what I picked out (all titles I haven't read before):

Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond
Dear Life by Alice Munro
American Pastoral by Philip Roth
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz
Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
Green Hills of Africa by Ernest Hemingway
The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson

Not sure where I should begin, but I have a lot of great reading ahead of me :D

An excellent and eclectic selection - I've read most of them. Enjoy.

Currently reading the second book of a Bob Mayer trilogy: Duty, Honor, Country; novels following West Point graduates through what I find, the most interesting period of US history: The Mexican and Civil Wars.

Good entertaining fiction and everything I've fact checked has been accurate so far. Vol 1: West Point to Mexico, Vol 2: Mexico to Sumter, Vol 3: Sumter to Shiloh.

Garth Nix
Googled him out. Crikey. He looks very similar to a Porsche enthusiast on YouTube whose name is Nick Murray. Mr. Nix is obviously older, but they look similar when you refer to Nix's older photos. Murray is from New Zealand, I believe. Maybe they're related or Nix leads a double life in America as Murray. Who knows.

Not sure I get the point of your post; while I have been known to google Porches, - especially older ones - I don't google Porsche enthusiasts (seriously?) and have zero interest in doing so.

However, back on topic, Garth Nix is an outstanding writer of fantasy, and is one of the first male writers I have read who writes terrific and credible female characters.

Frogkisser - which he published last year - is excellent - and hilarious in part.

You don't strike me as a car enthusiast who would go deep into knowing people in the various vehicle communities. Not meant as a dig, of course.

The name sounds familiar. I keep a record of what I buy, digital or print, but his name doesn't show up. The titles and covers look familiar. I must have bought some of his books for one of my nephews. Both have an interest in fantasy. A genre I've never and probably won't appreciate as much as other genres.

Edit: Unless Flashman counts. Those were and still are the highlights of my reading journey in life.

No, I'm not much of a car enthusiast, although there are certain models (Citroen DS, Jaguar E-Type and a few others) that I greatly admire. As for 'going deep" into knowing people in the various communities that interest me, no, I don't really do that even in areas that do interest me.

Not everything Garth Nix wrote is equally good, but I really loved the Old Kingdom (Abhorsen) material, Frogkisser, A Confusion of Princes, and some of his other stuff.

This one is next in the queue. I’ve been revisiting Ursula K Le Guin recently, and fantasy in general now for a little while.

Ursula Le Guin (Earthsea quartet) is on my desk in an unnamed African country; to be re-viisted when I return there.

I have already purchased the (original) Abhorsen trilogy to give as a gift for when I return there; meanwhile, I have two books by Mary Beard, along with Philip Pullman (Book of Dust, Vol 1) to peruse while I am home.

Finished Goldenhand this evening, accompanied by a few glasses of Something Nice - Lindul, a refreshing dessert style wine from Antonutti (tasting note: apricot).

Frogkisser is excellent and hilarious - something of both a homage and a hysterically funny send-up of many fantasy and fairy-tale tropes.

Still reading "Dictatorland" - by Paul Kenyon - it is excellent, along with Brian Lapping's superb "End of Empire", and also (simultaneously) dipping into the brilliant (but depressing) "The Real Politics of the Horn of Africa" by Alex de Waal, while studying the stunning "The Times Atlas of the World."

Just learned that Philip Kerr passed away a few weeks ago as a result of succumbing to cancer. Another great novelist gone.
