I'm rereading Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" and enjoying it very much (again). A family member is walking the Appalachian Trail this summer so I began the book around the same time she began her trek. The book is still hilarious like the first reading, but because someone I personally know is hiking the AT, it's also horribly alarming.

Ha! I loved that book. Would love to walk the Appalachian Trail. I’ve been to parts in the north but none south.

I've only been on the bit around Harper's Ferry, WV, which is an interesting place. And driven to Shenandoah's Skyline Drive but of course that doesn't count. The AT is a massive commitment in more ways than time. I wonder how much has changed since Bryson wrote "A Walk in the Woods." I thought the book was published ~2008ish & was shocked that it was actually 1998.

Cellphones/smart phones are probably the biggest difference. Should have a lot of impact on the emotional toll.

About halfway through ... and well that just about wraps it up for archeology! Well, digging stuff up anyway... ;)

A fascinating tour of the new discoveries that the new cheap DNA techniques are making in archeology and anthropology. If you're at all interested in such things then its an absolute must read. (What's being thrown up by this research should probably have a thread of its own as there's some revolutionary surprises that's going to mean some rethinking of various theories and loads more to come I'd imagine.)

The book itself is hard work - it needs an aggressive editor (leave alone a decent sub-editor) but I suspect a lot of others will follow this one on this subject.

Currently reading "Equal Rites" by Terry Pratchett. Or rereading, as the case may be. It's an amusing book, as you'd expect from Pratchett.

Actually, it is very funny in parts; this was the book that introduced me to Granny Weatherwax, one of my favourite characters - especially one of my favourite female characters - in all of fiction.

This morning I was lying in bed, looking at my bookshelves, and I noticed my few books by Tom Wolfe. At that moment I just thought to myself "is he still alive?" I checked my phone only to find out he had just died and his death started appearing in the news about 20 minutes before I suddenly decided to look him up. What an odd coincidence.

R.I.P. to an insightful non-fiction writer and novelist.

A Man in Full has been sitting on my shelf for a while and I've decided to start it. :)

Ah - I hadn't realised that; I enjoyed both The Bonfire of the Vanities and The Right Stuff.

Book recommendations on Napoleon? I'm fine with large tomes or multi-volume sets. Preferably ones with hardcovers. No real budget, but I'd like to keep it under $200.

I carry this with me for times like waiting in Emergency etc.
I'm likely interpreting your post incorrectly, but if not, why are you in hospital so much?

Well, being 82 with a bad heart might have something to do with it.
Somebody once told me that growing old wasn't for sissies, I'm slowly beginning to understand his point.

In the 1980s, I bought (and read) Vincent Cronin's one volume biography of Napoleon (Napoleon Bonaparte An Intimate Biography) and thought it pretty good and very readable.

I must admit up front that Napoleon is the guy I love to hate to love. So I have read and listened… extensively. :)

1.
Patrice Gueniffey's work in progress, a proposed three part bio.
He has completed the first one: Bonaparte. Splendid book in a very good English translation.

2.
The best recent bio written outside France recently is Andrew Roberts's Napoleon. Includes much recent new scholarship.

So much to admire… so much to be aghast at.

But he remains far more than the monster he is (usually) painted by the English.

Still, one hell of a life.

That is a classic.

I dug the TV show so now I am reading the first in the series:

The Black Echo: (Harry Bosch Novel Book 1)

51JOwBc5F8L.jpg

I am three quarters of way through it and I am really digging it, a lot!

I think I need to pick this up as well. How is the show structured; is each season based on a specific book or are the books kind of put through a blender to make the storylines for the show?

Obviously you've only read most of the first one, but if you have any insight I'd welcome it!
