Yes, it is a masterpiece, a really excellent work; brilliant, hilarious in parts, dark, disturbing, and utterly grotesquely superbly original.

I also greatly liked his dark satire "Heart of A Dog".

wow, thanks. I knew (may be felt) that there is smth
special in this book.. well, let's see :)
And "Heart of A Dog" will be the next.
Thank u!

Oh, yeah, have you read it in the original?

No. Bulgakov's masterpiece is complicated (and challenging) enough in English; my Russian is nowhere near good enough to tackle such a complex book.

For the past week, I have been nursing a twisted right knee (which aches quite badly) and have been recuperating with Derek Robinson's , latest work, 'A Splendid Little War' which takes a few of his protagonists to the immediate period after the First World War, where they become involved with the murky world of Russian politics (and war) as the civil war between Reds & Whites was fought.

Jack Canfield's - " The Success Principles"

Really great book. If you can follow at least HALF of those steps your life will become much better.

Just finished Deadlocked, the 12th Sookie Stackhouse, Southern Vampire Mystery novel upon which True Blood is based. It was good, but on the short side. I believe her next and final SVM novel is due in April.

China Miéville

Just finished Kraken by China Miéville, it was o.k. but not great.

But if you haven't read it, I would strongly recommend Perdido Street Station also by China Miéville. While it is not the easiest read, it is a GREAT wild ride of a novel. Has several adult themes (drug use, sex, etc.) so it not a book for kiddies. While it is listed as Fantasy or even Steam Punk, it is more often just classified "Weird Fiction". Sort like Dickens’s meets the Twilight Zone with some Kafka just to spice things up.

I really like both of them BUT I hate reading 2/3 of a trilogy and then waiting for the final book to be published (and translated).

Kess van Kooten is one half of the best satirical/comedy duo's that the Netherlands has ever produced. Their combined insight to life in the Netherlands through the 1960-1980 was ground breaking.

It struck me that it is time to re-read some of the Harry Potter books - it has been years since I read them.

So, I also, as part of this quest, decided to invest in hard-back copies of the American print editions, which are beautifully produced; everything from the quality of the paper, the font (Garamond, my favourite, an exquisitely elegant font and one which is extraordinarily legible), and of course, the lovely illustrations. Thus, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, and Order of the Phoenix are sitting on my sofa, awaiting my pleasure. Meanwhile, Half Blood Prince has arrived in my local book seller. Deathly Hallowes, I must ponder....

(And nor have I decided whether or not to order the first two books in the truly lovely US editions).

I did not enjoy this book. I'd be interested to know what you think of it.

Well, I'm only 1/3 of the way through, but I am enjoying it. However, it does seem like one of those books without a definite plot (he just seems to be going to parties at the moment!) I do find some of the vocab a bit daunting at times, but lucking there's the define button in iBooks :p

I just finished that one, and I'm already looking forward to read it again. :)

That's good - I'm reading it then going to watch the film when it comes out in May.

Finally found my way into it and about to finish Mansfield Park. Got myself Sontag's Death Kit today as the follow up. Quite excited, since I actually didn't know she wrote novels as well.

East of Eden wasn't available, scepticalscribe. Next time then.

A pity, for now, but you will have a treat in store for you when you do finally get around to reading it.

I have Misha Glenny's 'McMafia', - have had it for a while but couldn't face gritting my teeth and settling into it, and just received (today) Luke Harding's 'Expelled: A Journalist's Descent Into The Russian Mafia State'. Luke Harding has written for The Guardian, and Misha Glenny used to be the BBC World Service's Balkan correspondent; both are excellent writers and meticulous journalists.
