I can hold my touch for over an hour. No way I would, or would even want to, hold a 1.5 iPad for an hour. It doesn't matter how much it is "spread over". weight is weight. A Touch weighs far less than a typical paperback. I know--because I've weighed both. Robin Cook's Crisis weighs 329 grams. The touch, with silicone case, weighs 129 grams. Guess which one I prefer holding...

uh there's a case for that.

How is that better, for one you have near 140,000 iPhone apps you know will work with it, I'm sure at least 10,000 are games if not more.

The possibilities are more vast with the iPad, you can have better apps, better graphics, because it's so much better.
And watching movies on a net-book is not the same, because the iPad has a glossy LED-backlit IPS display, and you can hold it in your hands and watch it which you can't do with a net-book.

Some of your points are valid. However saying the possibilities are more vast with the iPad is debatable. More vast than what can be done on a PC or Mac? I'm not sure about that (- touch screen). Other systems have more powerful CPUs and Graphics Cards.

But that's neither here nor there. Everyone will have their own opinion as to what servers THEIR needs the best. I have no idea where this "win" mentality has to come from. And by "win" I mean that the iPad has to be better than anything or everything. Let the iPad be the iPad.

the iPad is a blank slate while the Mac/PC platform has become somewhat stagnant.

LOL the iPad's screen IS better than a netbook's. :D

you haven't seen one in person, have you?? I'm wondering how you can declare that it looks better at this juncture.

I have a netbook which has an awesomely clear, sharp, BRIGHT screen. Much better than my expensive Toshiba lappy

I just saw a video of the ipad--off axis, the screen image is HIDEOUS. Certainly NO BETTER than my netbook's image. In fact, it seems it's vastly inferior--kind of like my Touch's screen viewed off axis.

I don't see how anyone could want a netbook over a ipad. you are going to have over 144,000 apps to choose from. Plus you can surf the web. and you can watch movies and tv shows podcast. You can get 3g data plan with no contract people don't know how big that is try finding 3g data plan with out no contract for the price apple is offer for the ipad. Not only that the ipad is so thin and light enough that i can bring it anywhere i want to with out it taking much space up. I know my ipad will have updates to fix any problem and add features to it. You are not going to get that with a cheap netbook with windows on it. And people are saying that a netbook is better then a ipad..

OP needs to actually play with a netbook to answer his own question.

Answer: pretty much everything. :/

A netbook is a small full PC while the iPad is a gigantic iPod touch. Most importantly the iPad requires to be synced with iTunes on a full PC to function, a netbook of course does not.

Welcome back! :) Thought we lost ya there on that other post, going all soft on us lol.

Glad your back to the usual comments :)

I would questions your last statement, any "video" of a screen is going to look only as good as the camera shooting and the video compression it underwent prior to being posted on Youtube or whatever site.

I have a hard time believing an IPS panel has less viewing angle, dimmer screen than any TN panels large or small. The Dell TN panels are some of the nicest I've used (24" models) and they still look dull and dim compared to my 27" IPS iMac's screen.

As to your touch looking bad I'd take it in for repair, sounds like a bad one. I can view my iPhone 3GS screen from basically any angle until I lose view of the screen and it never distorts or looks bad. Not a TN panel I've ever seen or heard of that can do that.

Just to quote an article about TN vs IPS panels, this article is about as clear as any i've read on the subject. Personal preferences aside. Facts are Facts.

"IPS Panel Technology
S-IPS/H-IPS (In Plane Switching) panels are generally considered the best overall LCD technology for image quality, color accuracy and viewing angles, but this comes at a price. "

"TN Panel Technology
TN (Twisted Nematic) panels are the most widely used panel type in the manufacture of LCD monitors. TN panels are cheap and offer excellent response times, making them perfect for fast paced gaming. The response times of current TN panels range from 2ms to 5ms. However, color reproduction, viewing angles and contrast ratios of TN panels are the worst of any current LCD panel technology. Unlike most 8-bit IPS/VA based panels, TN is only 6-bit and unable to display the full 16.7 million colors available in 24-bit true color. They can mimick the 16.7 million colors of 8-bit panels using a technique called dithering, but the results are unimpressive. TN panels have become popular with the average computer user because they are very inexpensive and currently dominate the LCD display market in availability.

Nothing really. Netbooks are for people too cheap or too poor to buy a real computer.

iPad's are the future.

Correct.

Name one reason anyone would buy a netbook if they weren't on a budget. weight/thickness? Many ultraportables are lighter and thinner than netbooks.

On the other hand, many people will buy an iPad even if they don't have an budget. Hence, iPad serves a purpose whereas netbooks are only for those with very limited budgets.

My touch looks fine straight on. Like ALL touch's it looks awful at an angle. Not reverse video, but washed out/blue from the bottom or left, yellow/green from the right, and purplish from the top. Completely NORMAL.

The video of the iPad shows essentially the same issue that I saw on a photo of a Touch next to an AMOLED device. Off-axis the Apple product looked blue and washed out. That's the way it is. No defect. just technology. The video of the iPad shows the same issue. Therefore, I submit that it (iPad) is not superior to my netbook which also has a 9.7" screen.

Which video? I watched a lot of them, I didn't see any issues. But I have spent a lot of time looking at LCDs of differing technologies.

I went through a half dozen LCDs before I found my current IPS screen that I am happy with. I tried all the major types IPS/VA/TN. I currently own both an IPS monitor and a TN monitor and there is absolutely no contest between IPS and TN panels (like netbooks).

TN netbooks will have 6 bit depth color- So you get about 260k colors vs 16million in more common 8bit color on desktops. We will have to wait for color depth info on the iPad, but much higher likelyhood that colors will be represented in 8 bit depth like IPS desktop counterparts.

But viewing angles are absolutely the worse on any TN screen. This really isn't open for debate. I can identify any TN screen instantly just by looking at it from a couple of different angles.

In contrast my IPS screen has viewing angles almost as good as a CRT, it is the best I have seen on LCD. For viewing angles it is IPS>VA and these two can be hard to tell apart instantly. But they are both>>>> Much better than TN which you can instantly spot form its viewing angle weaknesses.

Here is a Visual comparing TN vs IPS viewing angles and you can pick any TN vs any IPS and it will be the same. It just isn't even close to debatable:

The display on the iPad is more expensive than the ones used in the MacBook and I guarantee NO netbook is using an $100 display.

You're a liar. You know how I know? Because you're wrong.

But seriously, you can not try to argue that the IPS screen of an iPad is not better than your netbooks screen. Don't get me wrong, I loved my HP Mini, it had a gorgeous screen, but up next to my girlfriends iMac it's just bland.

Why? Because of the IPS display. The washed out color your iPod experiences , if it's a generation one, could be due to a defective panel, such as mine.

You should also note that the iPod touch doesn't use an IPS display.

Well i'm pretty sure the iPad's screen is going to be as beautiful as my Macbook's.

And everybody knows Macbook screen > any netbook screen

Found some articles claiming the iPT has some issues compared to the iPhone, so much for same screen in both devices I guess. Either way, not to worried about the iPad if it's anything like the IPS on my iMac it will look great.

Bottom line we haven't seen the iPad to compare, but I haven't seen a TN panel yet that doesn't look bad once you tilt it 30 degrees or so off center. Personal experience aside, you can't change the facts the IPS is a better screen for viewing angles than TN panels, so no use debating the facts as they are already written.

I'm at a loss of how someone could think the iPad screen looks anything other than excellent. If I'm missing something, tell me.

Your not missing anything at all, the iPad's IPS screen will make netbook screens look just as bad as the 24" TN Dell I had sitting next to my iMac. I was perfectly happy with the Dell screen and it's one of the better looking LCD panels I've used. The 27" iMac is the first IPS screen I've had and sitting side by side.. no comparison. The iPad will show the same once it's out. The iPad in the video will look even better in person vs thru a video camera on Youtube.

I bought an Asus EEE 9" netbook to use as a sofa PC. It wasn't because it was cheap. It was because it was small, yet would run any app I really wanted to be able to use while away from my desktop PC. It works with my networked printer, and was easily expanded with more RAM and a larger SSD when I felt it needed it. I can access and play any media content shared on my home network. I can run iTunes and sync my iPods on it. Of course I can sync any other of my media players with it too.

Those are a few things I don't see an ipad doing.

The EEE with keyboard isn't the best sofa PC though. The keyboard gets in the way, and the trackpad mouse control is a pain. After also trying an Archos 9 I know the tablet form is a better fit there. The Archos 9 has it's own shortcomings, but will still run any app the EEE does.

The ipad will find a market. Hopefully app developers will fill holes Apple left in what has been shown so far and one will also be able to run any app I feel I need at my Sofa.

How about a hard cover best seller? Those are usually over a pound. My little sister used to read hard cover books, as well as paperbacks, for hours at a time while sitting on the couch, in the back seat of the family car, etc. Are you as not as strong?
