Oh I don’t know. I had a silver 8 Plus and I somehow dinged the top of it and the scratch was pretty apparent to me. I’ve similarly dinged a gold aluminum Apple Watch and the gouge on it actually didn’t look that bad. It wasn’t a silver gouge against gold like I would have expected. That’s the only experience I have with dinged up aluminum Apple products so far though.

I’ve had a black series 2 aluminum Apple Watch for over a year of hard use and it looks pristine. I don’t usually put dents and dings on my stuff but the watch was a freak accident and I really don’t know what happened to my phone. I had dropped it once but the drop didn’t do that.

this will be my first iPhone and the first time to use a case on a phone. what concerns me is that the xr can also get scratched in a case, if dust gets in, between the phone and a case. so, i guess, scratches are less visible on the white glass and silver sides than on the black... sorry, this is my anal side of me

Dust won’t scratch the aluminum. I never had that happen anyway. But when even silver aluminum gets pitted from scratching against keys in a purse, which I am guessing is how my damaged happened even though I’m usually careful, it’s going to look noticeable. My damage came from having the phone in a type of wallet case that left the top and bottom of the phone open.

As for protecting the glass you can order film protection for the back. Sometimes even tempered glass protectors are available but I tried that and found it is overkill. It gets in the way and it add weight. Film is sufficient to protect against scratches within the case from tiny gritty lint. Which honestly I’ve never even seen. What I get it for is to protect the finish on the phone from weird stains that some rubbery TPU liners in some cases cause via chemical reaction. Mostly I’ve seen that marring my aluminum finishes, not glass so much. It’s a pain to take off these chemical reaction stains.

My Urban Armor Gear Wallet case is a great case for when I’m hiking. I slid down a hill and landed on my iPhone and it protected the phone from serious damage. But the honeycomb patterned rubber liner left a honeycomb shaped residue that took me some hard work with isopropyl alcohol and a paper towel to remove. I thought for one desperate minute it wasn’t coming off at all.

So yeah, I do recommend applying a rear glass film protector to the phone. I’ve got one on my Product Red 8 Plus and it doesn’t affect the looks from what I can tell.

Here is what I ordered and it’s the same brand as I had on my Max and my 8 Plus Supershieldz

I'm not getting a new iPhone this year, but I think they made a big mistake by not making a purple model. I could see that selling HUGE with girls/women. They probably should've done purple over coral or yellow, to be honest (if they only wanted to do 5 color options).
I agree. I think purple would sell a lot better than coral. I’ve also always wished they’d make a purple leather case.

I don’t know. My fashionista teenagers tell me coral and pinks are big right now. They are trying to talk me into coral for that reason. I do see a lot of things that color now. I even have a Yeti thermos that color.

Congratulations for waiting so long! I think you picked the right year and model for a first iPhone.

No it can’t. Only a certain kind of sand is hard enough to cause micro scratches under a case and they can be polished away, if you’re able to see them at all.

This is not the iPhone 5 scuffgate anymore. The anodized color goes deeper and the aluminum is harder. Choose the color you like, not a color which will last. What is more visible on a black phone are fingerprints, so a white phone might look cleaner.

This would be my choice too, hands down.

I would too... were a REAL white available.
Inexplicably, all the other color’s sides & back match. Whereas, the white has silver sides. LAME!
I think a white phone would look fabulous.
Guess I’ll take a RED; although from the looks of it, that’s the one most likely to run out first.

Was going to get blue but I actually really like the coral, it’s like a bright orange colour and looks great

At this point, I really considered all of the colors at least for a short time. The yellow for its freshness, the red for its ferrariness, the black for going well with everything, including cases, the white for the way it reminded me of my old 5S, the coral for its bronze tone and the blue for it being blue. Ruled out the yellow for its weird goldish sides, the red for its machoness, the black for its lameness, the white for how it looked like what a surgeon would wear in the ER, the coral for it being just a little too much on the feminine side of things. So here I am, going blue.

But just maybe (fingers crossed) it will have decent cellular connectivity. I’ve been one of the unfortunate with XS Max connectivity problems. Returned the Max and hoping for better with the XR.

Great observation! I tried a regular XS and Max and the cell reception was impacted for me in a negative way.

I was all about the blue until watching a color review. States the blue is a baby or sky blue. I was hoping for a medium shade of blue. So I'll probably go with black.

Going with black. If the blue were a darker shade like navy blue, it would be first choice. Been a while since I had a black phone and since it will be in case, I guess it will actually be whatever public color I want it to be!

I've been wanting the yellow one since basically day one.
But for some reason, I am starting to doubt myself and whether this is the right option.

The only other colour I would consider is white, but is that boring / safe?!

Ugh, I need to decide quick. Not long to go!

I was also all-in on yellow, but yesterday I changed my mind to white. I’ve felt as if it’s too risky for me to think that I’m going to feel excited about yellow for two whole years.

I watched the video in post #80 after changing my mind to white and saw that the yellow is paler than I was expecting (which could just be the lighting/angles/etc., but still). This XR white also appears to be brighter on the back than the X/XS silver (per c|net), and for now I see that as a good attribute.

Also torn. Was between red and black and settled on red last week, but now wondering if it's just too "cherry red" for me. Especially if I keep the phone for 2-3 weeks at least. I like the matte black and think it's def sleek, but I like the pop of the red quite a bit. I guess we'll find out in 22 hours.

I think the black is the worst one personally.
So boring.

The white is definitely the safer option, but I just don't know if I will resent not going for a more colourful device.

The blue is also good - the only ones that are a definite no for me are Red, Black, Coral.

I could easily rock the Yellow, White or Blue.

Now I'm sat here pondering I am almost leaning to blue haha.

Oh God send help!

Indeed - the options available to buyers are great.
I like the blue.

I wouldn't call any of the colours hideous. I had a yellow leather case on one of my previous iPhones and had so many people complimenting me on it and it seems this is a similar shade. To each their own.

I even like the coral but would never personally have it myself.

I will have to make my mind up by tonight so I can get up at 8am and place the order!
