Thanks for the script! LC looks much better on my cMBP. It's a bit chunkier and is easier for me to read, especially when I'm tired (now).

Nice work. We'll see how it is when I make the move to 10.10 on the desktop.

Has anyone tried patching any other fonts? I'm curious to see other examples and not just Lucida Grande!

I gave Helvetica Neue a try for awhile on two non retinas. I felt it looked "fresh and light" but the blurriness always bugged me. Small sizes looked like crap. I just switched it out with Lucida and what a huge difference.

Lucida may not be as fitting in the artistic vision but it is way more usable.

system wide increase in font size needed!

No problem with the font, but the size is a real issue on an iMac 27" running the full resolution 2560 X 1440. The text is quite tiny and the only fix is to scale down to a lower resolution which degrades the quality of the screen's image. However on my MacBook Pro with retina...it is okay. I would hope Apple creates a way to tweak the system fonts for the larger screens.

Great point favorite bar across the top of safari is TINY!!! - how can we do a system wide increase of font size?!! One little week up a notch and my late 2009 27 iMac will look great again.

I personally prefer Lucida Grande as UI font on non-hidpi Mac.
What do you think of Lucida Grande + OS X Yosemite?
(Screenshot of Lucida Grande as UI Font on Yosemite is attached below)

schreiberstein created a script that automates the process of using Lucida Grande as Yosemite's default UI font. A huge thank you to him!

Indeed *much* better, Helvetica Neue is unbearable. Thank you so much to both of you!!!

Typography for Macs: a brief history

First Chicago – then Charcoal – then Lucida Grande for Aqua – and now a version of Helvetica Neue for Aqua. Those Identifont links are good for comparisons …

… more information in Wikipedia: ChicagoCharcoalLucida GrandeNeue Helvetica®.

… Helvetica Neue is unbearable. …

Technically, Yosemite uses a version of Helvetica Neue that is 'specially optimised' (but presumably not Neue Helvetica eText).

OS X Human Interface Guidelines: UI Design Basics: Designing for Yosemite (highlights)

The unoptimised version is a good typeface, but would be not good as a system font.

Lucida Grande Yosemite.app is not only for 'patching in a preference' for Lucida Grande.

A subsequent run of the app should effectively allow you to prefer what Apple prefers.

Plus, if I recall correctly, there's an on-screen hint when the OS is in single user mode. But I didn't properly test that approach to restoring the Apple default.

how to increase favorite bar across the top of safari? It looks so tiny.

The patch can replace the font in safari and finder bars?

Thanks

I really wish this was a native option in Yosemite.

On non-retina screens Lucida Grande looks SO much better as the main font.

As somewhat of a purist, I vote Lucida Grande. I tend to think many Mac users who've been around since OSX 10.0 (wow, 13 years?!) feel that this font is integral to the Mac interface, but I'm sure Helvetica will grow on me.

Another thing I hope to eventually get over is the feeling of being rubbed the wrong way whenever Mac OS is influenced by iOS. Helvetica is one example. Another was reversing the scroll direction by default on my mouse (Lion or Mountain Lion, can't remember at the moment) because it better mimicked touchscreen scrolling.

For now, in practical terms, the font is buggy with Firefox and looks awful, but Safari and Chrome look pretty good.

I haven't tried the patch but if I don't like it is it possible to revert back to Helvetica?

Something is giving me a headache with Yosemite when using it on an external monitor. Never had the same problem with Mavericks.

Same question here, if I use the patch but decide to revert back to "stock" Helvetica Neue how is that done? Many thanks to schreiberstein for creating this.
