Because Google released the new Nexus 7 and it's called the Nexus 7 (2013) It kept it's name. And it makes sense for Google to stick with it's naming scheme for the whole lineup.

I'm fairly sure they named it Nexus 4 because it is the fourth generation. The Nexus 7 is named for its screen size.

Why do people keep calling the next-generation Nexus phone Nexus 4?

I think because its logical they will continue with the name and just use years or generations to distinguish it. It's what they did with the Nexus 7 and what they will do with the Nexus 10. The Galaxy Nexus was 4.65". The N4 was 4.7". The Moto X is 4.7". I think Google prefers its phones to be around 4.7". I personally don't think they are going to make a 5" phone. They've established a brand of devices; a family set. Now they keep the names and establish consumer awareness. It's the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10.

I know people will say it's called the Nexus 4 because its the 4th Nexus, or because its 4.7" screen. It's definitely got to do with the screen size, just like the 7 & 10, but I don't think they are going to increase the screen size. Again, it's all just my opinion so we will see in a few months.

That is what people first thought with the iPhone 4, then they came out with the iPhone 4S and now iPhone 5. It has nothing to do with which generation it is. It is called a Nexus 4 because the screen is 4.7". If it is a 5" screen, it will be called a Nexus 5.

If they have a Nexus 10, Nexus 7, and Nexus 5 they still have a family set of devices. And in that case all will still be associated with screen size. Go back and read my previous post reasoning through why evidence seems to suggest a 5" Nexus 5.

I actually see Google raising their prices with Nexus Program.

I think $399 for 16gb and $449 for 32GB model no microSD slot.

2013 is the year of am manufacturers jacking up their msrp. Galaxy S3 was $550 msrp at ATT last year. Galaxy S4 is currently $639 msrp.

And carriers lowering their subsides. Prime example being Moto X at $199. No one believes the carriers are paying google $579 or whatever the retail price of the phone is.
Remember msrp and what carriers pay in bulk are 2 completely seperate matters. Sprint CEO already on record saying he subsidizes the iPhone 50% more than any other phone in their line back in 2011.

So I had no idea that LG had publicly said they aren't doing the next Nexus. I'm once again excited about this year's Nexus smartphone.

Yea I just saw that article in another thread. They could have just been lying and are going to make the next Nexus but if it is true I am curious to see who makes it next. I think it would be interesting if ASUS made it. I would love to have the same back material that the new Nexus 7 has. Its so comfortable and it doesn't feel like I'm going to destroy it.

Well...

I don't want the next Nexus to have a Qualcomm CPU.

Seems like there are problems with Qualcomm which block Google from releasing the factory images of nexus devices with Qualcomm CPU: Nexus 4, Nexus 7 2013, etc.

Just check any Android news site today and the article is there.

The only problems with the current Nexus 4: battery and camera.

If they improve those things, it will be the perfect phone!

I'd agree those are the two main problems. If they fix just those two, I'd probably upgrade my Nexus 4. Everything else would be gravy.

That ultimately says nothing. There was no quote of LG saying anything about not working on the Nexus 5.

However, I did find this:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/LG-h...on-a-Nexus-5-done-with-stock-Androids_id43430

Now if we really think about the update in that post, all it means is that at the time of that article Google had not decided on who was making the next Nexus smartphone. That is all it means.

And seeing as how we just found out that Samsung is working on the new Nexus 10 a couple weeks ago, it makes sense that months ago LG didn't know if they would be making a Nexus 5.

And since the next Nexus 10 and Nexus 5 will be coming out at the same time, it again makes sense that LG had no plans to make a Nexus 5 because Google hadn't decided who they wanted.

Let's also remember that Asus did the Nexus 7 again, Samsung is doing the Nexus 10 again, and it wouldn't be too far fetched for LG to do the Nexus smartphone again.

So to recap, all we know is nothing. The article about LG and the next Nexus is outdated and all it really did was basically have LG say "It is too early and we do not know yet."

Anything can happen. Personally, I hope it's not LG again.

-1080p displays, screen size can remain the same (have to have it if you want to attract consumers, becoming more mainstream day by day)

-Better camera optics (especially in low-light performance, more megapixels alone won't cut it anymore)

-Better battery life (grey area, but always welcomed)

-Improved build quality over the Nexus 4. (Current model's quality is decent, but can be improved as always)

Won't mind if it comes with 4.3 JB though. No point rushing out Android 5.0 just to accommodate the release of a smartphone.

I don't mind HSPA+ as well, but I know other folks will. Looks like LTE needs to be mandatory for more people to grab the new Nexus.

What do you not like about LG or their phones in general?

Haha don't let your bad luck kill LG for you. I love my Nexus 4. It is a great phone, extremely powerful, extremely cheap, and runs stock Android. And I'm on my 6th one. So I think I win in terms of replacements ;)

Now that everyone has said their unrealistic fantasy phone, its time for somebody to be the voice of reason.

The first problem with what everyone is saying is the fact that people are calling it a 2013 Nexus 4. Does anybody have any basis for that? Or are you just making a blind assumption? And saying the new one will have the same number because the Nexus 7 has the same number provides no legitimate evidence for your argument. The Nexus 7 kept the same number because the screen size stayed the same. Will the next Nexus smartphone keep the same screen size? We technically have no concrete information on this, but there is much more evidence pointing to a "no" than a "yes."

well youre calling it the nexus 5. what happens in two years will it be the nexus 7 along side the nexus 7?

Completely irrelevant as I never said an increase in screen size is directly related to each new generation.

“Nexus 5” to be based on LG G2, to come in early October with Android 5
http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-5-release-lg-g2-android-5-241624/

The device is reportedly going to be launched in early October and will come with a new version of Android on board – Android 5 Key Lime Pie. Moreover, Daum specifies that the name of the smartphone co-developed by Google and LG will be Nexus 5, built off the same platform as the LG G2 smartphone.

From AC - Rumors of people discussing the new LG G2 smartphone, and people asking if there will be a "Google Play Edition" ? yeah, the Google version is going to be called the Nexus 5.

Don't believe the immediately refuted story that LG is not producing this year's Nexus. All year long, LG sources have leaked to South Korean newspaper Daum developments. In May, when Google CEO Larry Page visited South Korea, LG CEO showed him prototype of Nexus 5. More recently, specs to G2 leaked along with confirmation of G2/Nexus 5 co-developement.

Copy and paste this word string into your browser and hit enter: Daum LG G2 Nexus 5

I remember seeing that, but I don't think they will go that big on the screen. Maybe based off of it in terms of looks.
