Ahh I see. I've personally never used email clients unless it's work related. I always prefer to login to the domain of the email provider and have everything just update and sync perfectly every time.

Most IMAP clients do that. Easy peasy.

I prefer clients and IMAP - allows me better control, offline convenience, and privacy options (eg, blocking trackers). Used Apple Mail for years and switched to Mailmate a few months ago and it works flawlessly!

Yes, what you *actually* mean is that you use the provider's web mail. "Login to the domain of the email provider" is a nonsense statement.

If there's a desktop client better than Fastmail's webmail, I haven't found it. Google's *certainly* isn't it, Google could give master-level classes on how to NOT create a user interface.

I use Airmail now on both iOS and my Mac. It has some cool features like a custom user icon, font and visual customization, and swiping. I tried Edison email and will try again to see if syncing works, because Airmail often doesn't sync changes for me, either. I use Fastmail and love the web interface, but I cannot see the icons on my iPhone to use the app. It just doesn't allow swiping with my magic mouse!
I tried Mailspring and loved it, but not the cost. Plus, managing contacts was a bust. No iOS app.
I also tried emClient, which is wonderful for those of us with visual impairments. It allows sweeping customizations, but only works on my Mac, not iOS. Dang it. Plus, it doesn't allow for swiping.
Mailmate just looks 1990's, like Thunderbird. Fail.

@kreela and that is exactly my complaint about Airmail, background refresh s****. I have sent a support request for this BUG and the only thing they said: invalidate tokens and try again. But I have seen emails arriving at my Inbox in the iPhone that takes a while to appear on the MacOS app, even having it opened and constantly refreshing the Inbox. On the other side, Rules does not work properly

I used Thunderbird from around 2005 or so on Windows machines. When I switched to MacOS in 2012 it was a simple decision to carry on with Thunderbird and simple to transfer my email archive.

Ah, good, a mostly current thread on my current favorite topic...

I've been using Postbox. But it, as well as many other of the e-mail clients I've looked at, are really sparse in the documentation department. Postbox is better than some in that regard, but, you have to pay for tech support. Now it's only $8, and if it's something not documented (or a bug) they'll refund your money. But I really don't feel like I should have to give out credit card information and gamble that my question isn't answered somewhere on their web site. No support forum either (they explain why, but they could work around that problem)

So right now I'm looking for an alternative, which is almost completely but not totally like Postbox. Except with support. And not a monthly/annual fee. And POP3 support (there, I said it). And doesn't require mail hosting on their servers. And doesn't do a dozen things unrelated to e-mail.

Full disclosure: The last e-mail client I really liked was Eudora.

Apple mail works most of the time, but I've had trouble with searching, smart mailbox updates, and transient missing mail.

For all of us is known that the eMail App in macOS and iOS is not the best and is far from competition. I have been looking for the most complete of them and tried (with my Google Account, both personal and work):
  • Airmail: I liked it at first glance, however ...
    • found issues with synchronization between devices ie: mark an email as read on macOS but iOS still having the same email as non-read leading me to open the application on my phone and mark the email as read there.
    • long-press shortcuts do not work from the lock screen on my phone: I tried to delete emails from the lock screen by tapping on "Trash" and surprise the email still on my Inbox
    • email rules do not play nicely
  • Microsoft Outlook:
    • email rules do not play nicely
    • lacks integration with Zoom Calls on the calendar
    • lacks integration with Fantastical Calendar
    • latest version s****ks
  • Spark:
    • lacks integration with Fantastical Calendar (I was in contact with Fantastical support and I was told Spark does not want to support Fantastical, shame on them)
Those are the three I have tested. What I am currently looking for? An email client that works for iOS and macOS and has support with Fantastical Calendar (and if not it has good support for a calendar with integration with zoom calls very important nowadays).

What email client are you using currently?

I am sticking to default iOS email client because of contacts integration. Although, not very happy of attachment format. It is placed at the bottom of the email and it's annoyed if chain mail is longer.

Thunderbird for 20+ years, first on Windows and kept it when I switched (actually returned - first home computer was a IIe)

I am using MailMate and like it a lot. It’s not eye candy but its flexibility and speed make it my go to. I tried Edison mail but could not get it to work properly and their tech support is non-existent.

Thunderbird is my go to. Works across the big 3 OSes (Windows, Mac, Linux), tons of support for different email providers and the interface works real good for me. That and it's open source, always a plus in my book.

I'd happily stay with native app like I used to for almost 20 years, but there's vast array of bugs for me since introduction of Mojave. From smart folders dissappearing and broken search on Mojave to all accounts randomly going offline now on Big Sur. I've googled a bit and found out these are common problems, with no clear solutions. Since Apple obviously shows no interest in getting things together, I'm with Spark now.

I use the stock Mail app and find it generally supports what I need to do pretty well. But that said, its support for Gmail-specific features like labels is kind of kludgy.

I have, however been beta testing a Gmail-specific client called Mimestream and like it a lot. Not sure when it's coming out or what the pricing will be, but it seems to be in really solid shape and has been in beta for quite a while. No support for other email providers, unfortunately, just Gmail -- though I see IMAP support is on their "considering" list, so maybe it'll see the light of day.
