I use the stock Mail app and find it works just fine for me.

I have, however been beta testing a Gmail-specific client called Mimestream and like it a lot. Not sure when it's coming out or what the pricing will be, but it seems to be in really solid shape and has been in beta for quite a while. No support for other email providers, unfortunately, just Gmail.
+1 for Mimestream here. Been using it for almost a year and it's incredible. The developer spent over 7 years at Apple working on Mail and Notes. If there's anyone that's going to be expert at creating a "native-like" experience for Gmail on macOS, it's this person. The results speak for themselves.

Am I missing something here? Why do people insist on using an email client at all? I'm really curious.. unless it's for work, what's the point?
Offline support, the ability to check multiple accounts. Native UI instead of yet another browser tab.

I am sticking to default iOS email client because of contacts integration. Although, not very happy of attachment format. It is placed at the bottom of the email and it's annoyed if chain mail is longer.
This is pretty handy, FYI. If you hover here and click the attachment dropdown, you can open attachments right from there without scrolling down.

And effortlessly moving emails from one account to another. No forwards.
Backups of the mail in the account. I‘ve seen many of my customers lose all of their email when they lost access to their account.
Same. I was doing tech support for a friend who'd gone over her storage quota on her Google account, and I was able to walk her through making an "On My Mac" mailbox and moving a bunch of stuff there to remove it from the server and free up space.* Very quick and easy fix, and as a bonus everything is backed up to a second drive with Time Machine.

* She was too cheap to just buy more storage, of course, but that's a whole other story

Thanks for the Mimestream tip...looks great! I have been having issues with the Apple Mail client and google/gmail accounts for a good couple of years now - mainly search just doesn't work. Usually Spotlight in the OS always shows me correct results but not in the mail app itself. Bit of a show stopper. Tried Mailspring and a few others but didn't get on with them all that much. Mimestream is looking good though...hopefully whatever the pricing turns out to be it won't kill it.
