Pretty sure publishers set the prices on all the game stores. There's plenty of DRM free games on Steam too and they could easily be far far worse. They do let publishers sell steam keys on other sites for free, the Steam Deck is tinker friendly and they don't block you from installing games from outside Steam, etc. Compared to Apple or Microsoft they're pretty open.
All true, but Steam is dangerously close to a monopoly. Can you launch and save without the Steam client? I know GOG and many Epic titles can.

It’s the Alpha n.6 right? I see they are on Alpha n.41 on Win…

Maybe, if developers start finding it easy to a) port Windows games using the new porting tools, or b) getting better at coding for the Metal API, we may start seeing more games on Apple Silicon. The capabilities the M3 and M4 GPUs are offering are really promising!

If you try it out on a Mac just let me know how it runs.
@Populus Why not pickup a cheap box and enjoy the free title's? You dont need a monster computer to play and there's loads of them on the used market. TBH some of these indie games are miles better than what the greedy & incompetent publishers/studios push out; broken messes, DLC's to conclude the game, some are simply never fixed...

Holding off for an M4 MBP serves only to punish yourself as it will never run the catalogue a Linux or Window's machine can. Just treat it like a console and be done with it... While I like the challenge, getting games to run on Apple Silicon natively can and is problematic. Worse they can break due to an update of the OS and frankly there is zero support outside of your own knowledge base.

Big Doom 3 fan, even the BFG edition :) It now runs terribly on Apple Silicon yet the OS is demonstrably faster and far more efficient? Thankfully the OG Doom 3 got an update to the source port and runs perfectly with far higher demands🤔

Epic gives games away every week and with a little lateral thinking you can run a good few titles on the Mac natively.

Cost's you nothing and the games will be in your account indefinitely. Who knows a source port engine may drop. I play Total Chaos on my M1 and even the dev said he never envisage such a scenario on an ARM based Mac.

If in the market today, I'd buy a new Mac for work that meets the need and a used PC for gaming and let someone else take the hit on the deprecation...

From what I see on their website , Crossover is 74€ per year. You mean Parallels is now more than 70€ per year? God I hate software rental.
Wow, it's gone way up from what I remember. There are discount codes available, like the one on the Apple Gaming Wiki (not sure what the forum policy is on reposting links so I won't do it here.) That one is 20% at the time of posting, but that's still pretty steep. I keep hearing about something called 'Whisky'; it sounds like a Wine wrapper, but I haven't delved into it. Can anyone comment on how well (or not) it works?

Whisky is basically Wine for Apple Silicon. It works, but like Wine you'll have to be prepared to put a little work into it. You might be interested in this about VMware Fusion here on MR.

Personally I'd go with Whiskey as I dont rent SW and there's plenty of resources on the web.

Nice atmosphere in those first 2 images...
Radiophobia 3 is a free full game as the studio open sourced the code. Radiophobia 3 beats many a paid game into the ground, being truly an FPS shooter & and an RPG. It's a dark, gritty & realistic world, yet deeply rewarding to play. You can make a difference both positively & negatively, choices count rest is on you...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games have a unique AI where one of the players is the game world. Bad things can happen to pivotal NPC's completely out of your control, nor are they scripted changing your play significantly, equally you will never be boxed in.
Only thing holding you back is, well you...

Oct 2024-
  • Dragon Age Inquisition (2014 original release)- If you like a party based, solo RPG and don’t like isometric views and turn based combat, this might be the answer. After getting more skills under my belt as a rogue archer, I’m enjoying the scenery (a pretty game with nice natural environments) and the combat. I especially like not having to micromanage my party. You can manage their skill progression or put it on auto.

  • Starfield (2023)- Set this down for a while, then picked it back up.The environments are fantastic, however I think some procedural generation is involved. The combat is good enough, the space combat, flying a ship is doable with keyboard and mouse via mouse steering, but feels a bit mechanical. The profound dissapointment is the game‘s social interaction. They updated everything from a decade ago except the latter. Don’t have crew members ask, “How’s it going boss?”, but having nothing to say if you actually stop to tell them. And the companions are a disappointment so far too.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)- Killer game, not perfect, but it resides at the apex of solo action RPG computer gaming, imo. :) Great story telling, a fantastic main quest, the best graphic engine I’ve ever seen, with evolutionary social interaction. Even with scripted dialog, it feels more fluid, natural and organic than any game I’ve ever played especially in contrast to Starfield.
As pointed out to me, as an RPG, there are not enough choices that affect the story, but there are choices, decisions that shape the outcome for your character in this story. You can be brave and take your chances, or be a chicken like me and read up in advance regarding possible outcomes.
This is my 4th playthough, so I’d say if you’re having a good time, take your chances and after it’s over, then read up on the possibilities. And if somehow it’s your first time and you have the Phantom Liberty DLC, be aware that if you take the Dog Town quest when it becomes available, fairly early in the game, there is a choice there which can short change the original endings. Imo, this complicates the game, they should have made it a prequel, part of getting established in Night city with Jackie (no relic, no Silverhand). Some people will say to play though the original game, then from a save, veer into Dog Town (Phantom Liberty DLC) and just enjoy it as another chapter of the story.

  • Fallout 4 (2015)- After the mod killing, Next Gen patch was forced on Steam version owners to accept, I purchased the GOG version, DRM free, installed 40 mods and started playing it again like I rewatch a good movie. Great story here, with likeable companions. :D

  • War Thunder- Online tank, airplane, ship combat . Better tank handling, that feels more like real tanks than World of Tank‘s arcade tanks. Realistic damage modeling, but my primary complaint is that you’re often killed by invisible tanks and you often end up trying to shoot at specs on the horizon, because they can shoot you. Am I making an argument for a different visual perspective? 🤔
  • World of Warships- After playing this for a decade, I finally figured out how to play cruisers, play like you don’t want to get shot. 😳 Most can’t take hit. I refuse to play subs or carriers.

I switched over from Ubisofts subscription to Xbox Gamepass Ultimate. Have done a little step back in time playing Fable. Love the dialogue in the game and I think this is the first game I played that had a morality system in place. I also installed Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Not an online player so going through story mode. A fun, intense, fast paced game with great maps so far. Looking forward to the next Black Ops game coming out this month.

I'm torn on Civ VII ... I played the heck out of Civ IV (my late entry point) and expansions, then CiV V to a lesser extent .. only finished main CiV VI once but did partial replays many times. Hmmm ... but I love the IDEA of Civ VII.

The first Planet Coaster amazed me, but I ended up stalling out with it, when it came to my designs. 😐

I'm playing Silent Hunter 3 on Steam. It's a 2005 Ubisoft WW2 submarine simulator game.

Interesting enough, it's only specced for Windows 2000 or XP but I decided that it looked good and that I would try running it with the latest version of Crossover. Other than the 2005 era graphics, it's been a pretty good game so far.

I played a sub game a while back, what the heck was it? 🤔 World of Warships brought in subs if you’d like some multiplayer action, but I won’t touch them because, of how unrealistic they were made to be competitive. Things like homing torpedoes, and crazy fast. When I see a sub scooting along the surface almost as fast as my destroyer, it‘s kind of funny, when I’m not cursing them. It’s kind of like this, you don’t want to be in a battleship facing a submarine by yourself.

The sub in the game is a WW2 sub with a max surface speed of 16 - 17 knots. Under water, it's a lot slower. It's somewhat depressing seeing everyone (except slow merchant ships) passing you when you are surfaced :).

No homing torpedoes either.

First of Fez. Highly imaginative platformer with a twist - You can turn the entire map around, to create new puzzles. Very likable game, with a lot of good puzzles. I won't be 100%'ing this one, even though it is up my alley, because some of the puzzles are insanely hard. Heck, there's one of them the entire community have only figured out how to solve by brute force - They don't know how the puzzle answer is actually figured out. And it is unknown if there are still missing puzzles in the game. o_O

Very enjoyable though, and it makes you think. If you like highly complex, and in some cases abstract puzzles, then this is your game. Lots of secrets to find too. 5/5

Next up, Yoku's Island Express. I've always noticed how it got high ratings, but based from the screenshots, I thought it looked very shallow. Turns out I was wrong. This is one of the best games I've played in a while! You are a beetle with a ball stuck to you, and you have to save an island by delivering mail! The overall thing is that you use your ball to jump around, using pinball paddles, and even though it sounds weird, it just works. The developer calls it an open world pinball game, and they are definitely not wrong. Lots of great platforming, really good puzzles, loads of hidden secrets, a cozy theme, and plenty of pinball! I enjoyed the heck out of it, and 100%'ed, which is not something I do often for games.

Highly recommended, 5/5.
