Did a video of my iMac G3 handling various media....

I miss being able to eject DVD's and CD's from my iMac G3. As far as I can tell, the rollers or whatever rubber belt is in there is busted. I can hear it whirring, but it's like a fish bone that's lodged in one's throat... that thing ain't going nowhere.

Boy was it painful - so many gotchas, "to install that you need to install this (but first to install that you need to install this...)"
Sounds just like my first Linux install where I was wading through rpm dependency hell without the slightest idea of what I was doing! :) It was still fun though.

Even so, after all the ordeals it looks like quite a nice workaround. I might give this a shot on my Titanium; the performance of it should be at least fairly better than with a G3.... well I guess that depends on whether or not VPC 4 supports AltiVec.

As part of trying to offer someone advice over at macintoshgarden, installed K-Meleon on Windows 2000 in VPC4/OS9 on my G3 iBook - mighty slow but it does get past the TLS problem as shown here reaching Wikipedia:

thats pretty good since k-meleon is also one of the most lightweight browser engines thats still fairly compatible with modern stuff. it would actually be a great candidate for an os 9 browser port since the code is pretty simple too (see: works on vanilla windows 2000 & 98, without kernel or system api hacks), if someone wanted to take up the task.

A follow up to yesterday - Retrozilla/Windows95/VPC4/OS9

im not sure why you had issues with retrozilla. ive used it on windows 95 and 98 and all i needed to do was download the setup and run it, no dependencies or anything needed.

It just wouldn't launch. I then tried to install Opera 10.70 - that required at least 5 other things to be installed....and that didn't work either.

Then I tried Retrozilla again and it worked - the other installs fixed whatever was wrong.

virtual pc doesnt even emulate sse let alone sse2/sse3, it is pretty much like a pentium 75mhz except even slower due ot being emulated. thats probably the source of your issue with opera at least, although retrozilla doesnt need sse

I played Medal of Honor Allied Assault on my G5 1.8 DP running Sorbet Leopard. Checked work email in InterWebPCC and now I am posting to this forum in the browser as well.

I don't know why I enjoy using this computer so much when I have a M1 MBA at my disposal. I guess it is the slower pace. I feel like I am actually using a computer. At least how computers used to be for a good portion of my life.

It would appear that my second Gigabit NIC (Netgear GA311 REV.A1) died some time after bedtime last night but before the 2am server backup. Annoying, but I can't whine. Both NICs were used and I got them free. They're over 15 years old at this point.

Anyway, ~$15 on eBay with free shipping got me a NIB replacement.

This is my PowerMac G3 server by the way and I went with a Netgear replacement of the same model because I know it works (no drivers, OS X 10.4.11 Server already has them).

EDIT: Since the G3 has two NICs I'm connecting via the first NIC.

For the last few years it's been using Goanna with Arctic Fox's updates.
Code:
KM76.4.6-Goanna-20220528.7z Changelog: Out-of-tree changes: * update Goanna3 to git e7535dc94b...0bc2879198: - import changes from `dev' branch of rmottola/Arctic-Fox

Time to pour one out for the Netgear GA311, for a good life lived.

Been doing battle with a pair of G3 PDQs to get data on and off them. They are both MacOS 9.2 and have ethernet so I've been using that to FTP files, and at work that's fine because the PDQ there is on my desk permanently, but at home, I keep forgetting the ethernet cable, and have to drag that over after the first attempt fails because I forgot to. Truly, an old-dude-first-world problem.

I do have a floppy disk module, but only one, and I don't want to risk messing it up carting it backwards and forwards. And anyway, I fairly regularly need files bigger than 1.4Mb. An SD-PC Card adapter with various cards formatted on various early Macs sometimes works, but usually not - often asking if I want to format the unrecognized 16Mb drive (actually using 8-32Gb SD cards) instead.

USB seemed like a good idea, so I ordered an ($8) USB adapter from Amazon to try in the PC Card slot, but it wasn't recognized. It supplied power to USB devices, but no activity. Disappointing until I came across a comment that classic MacOS only installs support for devices it finds during the install, and since the PDQ has no USB, I thought I'd look for drivers online.

I found a 'USB adapter support 1.4.6' on Mac Garden, and downloaded it, dropped the contents in the extensions folder and rebooted - now the USB card is recognized and I can copy files on and off to a thumb drive.

At this rate, the PDQs will be the most accessible/communicable of any systems I have - SCSI, Ethernet, LocalTalk, CD ROM, floppy, USB and I even have 'Air Talk', (designed and built by a user over at 68kmla) which I haven't tried yet.

upgraded the cpu in my 2.0ghz DC g5 to a 2.5GHz DC cpu. Just finished the thermal calibration on it and definitely notice a performance improvement. I may need to check the thermal paste as when under load it goes into the low-mid 60's and hangs in the 50's, unless that's fine for it?

Was there anything wrong with your old processors? Will they work with a 7,1 G5? I have dual 1.8 and wouldn't mind changing to 2.0. Unless I am better off with a machine that came with the 2.0 for the faster bus speed. I think the difference in bus speed between the 1.8 and 2.0 is 100mhz. Maybe bus speed doesn't matter as much with that difference.

I played a Winnie the Poo interactive children book I got from macintoshrepository.org with my 3 years old daughter on my tangerine clamshell iBook G3. Since orange is her favorite color she loves that machine. I think it's a nice device for her to learn computers, it's colorful and looks friendly. Plus it's not so fast paced like a modern iPad or something like that. Some inputs take a while so she has to learn patience. And she get's bored after 20-30 minutes on her own, so it's a natural limitation and I don't have to take something away she likes doing at the moment. I installed the game a couple of weeks ago and we play every other day.

This reminded me of this site and forum I haven't visited in years. So I wanted to look for inspiration what else to do with the iBook and found this thread. Got nostalgic and started my 15" 1,67 ghz PowerBook G4. Sadly after about 30 minutes of installing the latest tenfourfox update and playing around with it suddenly the screen went black. It doesn't react to anything now, no light on the power connector, no sound, nothing. It's not the power supply since I tested it with a second one from a 12" 867 mhz PowerBook G4. The 12" book works fine with both power supplies. Fiddling around with the ram sticks didn't do anything, so I guess that 15 incher is gone after 17 years. I'm thinking of searching for another damaged one locally for parts to repair it, but between said 3 years old daughter and work I doubt I'll find the time within the next couple of years.

Gave my newly aquired 11,2 a ram upgrade. Not sure if i'll bump it up to 16gb yet as it doesn't even come close to using the 10gb i put in it. It now has 4x 2gb sticks and 4x 512mb sticks installed.
My Quad has 16GB and at some point I decided that rather than having it sit there unused all the time I wanted to put it to work. I came up with a way to create an 8GB ram disk by creating four 2GB ram disks and then RAIDing them. It was useful to have my browser and cache in a ram disk as well as having Photoshop use it as a scratch disk.
