It’s not PowerPC, but it does run the Mach kernel. Booting an AlphaStation 250 4/266 running DEC OSF/1 from 1995.

Did some stuff with the PowerBook G3 PDQ today. I had previously upgraded to OS 9.2.2 as an attempt to solve the finicky-ness of the PC Card slots. Upgrading to OS 9 did not change a thing in that regard, so I downgraded back to OS 8.6. Once I got it setup how I wanted it, I wanted to do what I've been doing with my Dual USB iBook and make an image of the HDD. I figured I would use Disk Utility like I did with the iBook. Of course, the PDQ can't do FW TDM and SCSI TDM isn't an option either and I don't have an IDE to USB cable, so I decided to restore one of my iBook's OS X images to an SD card and try to boot the PDQ from the SD card via an SD to PCMCIA adapter. That didn't work. So I tried to boot from a Jaguar CD. That didn't work out either. Finally, I decided to use Disk Copy 6 by booting from my OS 9.2.1 retail CD. I saved the image file to the SD card I was trying to boot OS X from. The process worked and now I have an image of my PB's HDD.

…used my external Firewire 400 iSight connected via a FW400/800 adapter to engage in a Zoom meeting (Parent/Teacher Conference) on my MP. I acquired this iSight some time in 2012 I think and this was the first real test of it's functionality via the adapter and Zoom (I've used it on my 17" PowerBook for Skype, back when Skype still supported PowerPC).

Once I realized my mic was still set to 'Line-In' instead of 'iSight' everything went great. Worked perfectly.

Bringing it up, because the external iSight was a thing during the PowerPC era. I think it is totally cool that this iSight (and my second one) still continue to be useful. And the mics on them are outstanding!

Watched a DVD on my Dual USB iBook recently. I find that I prefer watching a DVD in Tiger's DVD player over OS 8/9's. Apple DVD Player under OS 8/9 doesn't do full screen. It has "fill screen", but all that really does is make the application window look bigger. You can still see the desktop in the background and the menu bar at the top of the screen. And you're still watching the DVD in a window. The control panel used for playback doesn't go away on its own either, you have to hide it manually. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, there are no alternative DVD player programs for classic Mac OS. I don't mind watching in a window sometimes, but I really wanted to go full screen, so I rebooted into Tiger and used its DVD player instead.

Tiger's DVD Player does actual full screen and the control panel goes away after a few seconds once you let go of the mouse. I noticed that the colors looked washed out, so I went into System Preferences and switched the color from "color LCD" to "Adobe RGB (1998)." I have Photoshop 5.5 installed on the OS 9 partition, so I assume that's how that option showed up. I was surprised to see it. It's amazing that an RGB profile written for classic Mac OS works under Tiger. The colors look so much more vibrant now and I greatly prefer this setting over the default "color LCD."

Very cool. The iSight camera is a stunning, elegant piece of design work. I'd pick one up, but have no need for one.

The first time I got one, it was from a reseller on eBay who was selling retired items he had received from a university. At the time, Skype was still PowerPC compatible and I got it for $50 to replace the terrible USB cam I had. Unfortunately, I never got to use it as my reason for using Skype disappeared shortly after the purchase.

I inherited a second one later on and that's attached to my Mac Mini with the same type of FW adapter. I dearly would love to use both cams more because they are really good, but I just do not get to use them much.

I was really happy it performed flawlessly with Zoom - once I got the preferences straightened out, LOL!

Although technology is constantly evolving and improving, it doesn't mean that old tech should be ruled out. The majority of device functions are '2020-compatible' (especially tech accessories), occasionally requiring some low-level technical knowledge to make the transition to modern-day. With PowerPC Apple devices, the extra effort is worth it, due to the uniqueness of how they approach(ed) UX/design.

Hi,

I’m new here. I have a very good condition 12” PowerBook with SSD upgrade. I use it to listen music (and sometimes watch SD movies). Vox 0.2.8 + DragonFly RED + AQ “Tower” interconnect cable = I am completely ok with the sound quality. M-Audio is cheaper and a good choice for making simple things, but the DF RED requires very little power. There is a 128 GB SanDisk ultra fit for FLAC storage.

The iTunes 10 + Asus RT-AC65P works well together. The AirPlay also. I don't really use it, but it works well. The PB is completely quiet of course. I mostly record radio shows with it.

For SD movies, I found that 720x300 / 24 is an optimal ratio. With good settings, the temperature and the fan are relatively normal. XBMC is also a good choice, but I prefer the VLC.

A few more things. I use a lot the CorePlayer, FStream, Skim, Xee, Pixelmator, VNC Viewer (both with iOS) and DropCopy (via iPhone to DropBox). I'm not a big YouTube user. I do not care. I just reading few lightweight forum, and listen to music etc. I really really love this little PowerBook. And finally. There is a good ASUS 300 Mbps wifi stick. The N13 B1 has a Leopard driver because it's a Realtek chip. It was very hard to find but works stably!

I use Print Shop Deluxe. Still had some thank you cards to write from graduation gifts, so I decided to do that before I got started on school work this morning. :)

Very cool. In retirement, mom likes to make greeting cards - has all the little punch out tools & stuff so my family gets custom made by mom/grandma cards for all occasions.

Naturally, I appreciate a quality hand made card. :D

Thanks! That's cool, I do think it'd be fun to try that sometime. I've gotten hand-made cards before and have always been fascinated by how intricate everything is.

There's something so appealingly romantic about something hand-made such as a greeting card. Sort of gives new meaning to one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite anime series - "A letter can transcend time and space to deliver someone's heart."

@RogerWilco6502 You mentioned graduation; would you be included in the famed Class of 2020, perchance?

(I respect your right to anonymity; you don't need to answer that if you don't want to.)

Yep! I'm of the Class of 2020. :)

I'll be honest though, as someone who is naturally quite shy, I didn't really miss the graduation ceremony. It would have been nice to have such a ceremony to commemorate the closing of a chapter in my life, but it also probably would have made my anxiety go through the roof. :p
