Pretty soon there’s gonna be an up to date modern video player for PPC Macs
I hope that means you're working on something special.....with your track record, I believe you are more than capable of something miraculous like this.

Oooo! Hopefully it's mpv. It's video streaming performance is superior to mplayer. It's also like a Swiss army knife that supports darn near any media format.Pretty soon there’s gonna be an up to date modern video player for PPC Macs

The fact there's still some development of any apps for the PPC tells me that unlike what Apple wants us to believe, an 'unsupported' device isn't something folks should just toss into the garbage or fear monger about how unsafe it is online...
Unfortunately it's not, I will drop one hint however. It requires SDL2, and I'm quite sure I'm the first person to ever get it to run on Panther (SDL2 requires Mac OS X 10.6 currently, I found some Tiger patches and then had to make some of my own patches to get it to run on 10.3.9).

VLC starts reading my USB directory and the poor quality radio stations. The 2.0.10 (32bit) VLC crashes many times. There is no problem with the G5 processor, but it is better to use another player on the G4.
On PowerPC I stop at version 1.1.12. It's not only lighter than 2+, but still very codec compatible in 2020. I think you'll also find it a lot more stable. Here is a link if you want to try it out. It requires Leopard BTW.
Agreed! PPCMC in itself was a miraculous feat.
Quite. On how many occasions have they informed us that our machines cannot run whichever latest OS release, only for this to be refuted or defeated by members of the Mac community? Some notable examples include officially preventing particular G3's and G4's from running Tiger and Leopard and the patched versions of El Capitan that were created by enthusiasts for early Mac Pro's - which is something that Apple's engineers could have produced.
The Apple of today largely offers disposable computers that cannot grow with you as your computing needs develop and if/when your requirements change, they will have to be abandoned in favour of a new purchase. I strongly suspect that the marketing execs at Apple resent the fact that older generations of Macs are not hindered in this manner and are still in operation - with machines from over 20 years ago continuing to remain viable and capable for a variety of tasks.
Judging by that screenshot, can we safely assume that there will be a G3 version?
Of course there is a G3 version, and it works on Mac OS X 10.3.9 Panther+! A completely up to date modern video player will soon be apart of PPCMC (and why version 7.2 has been in development for weeks, I literally just got it all working).
I would love for the Apple Marketing execs to see SDL2.0.3 working on an OS that is 4 versions removed from the required Mac OS X 10.7.
Fantastic, I can't wait!
Will it also have DVD playback? The reason I ask is because PPC VLC and Apple DVD Player have a few shortcomings in this area. The former doesn't provide acceleration - whilst the latter does, but it will only play a physical DVD that's mounted in a drive, which means that whereas VLC will happily access VIDEO_TS files, Apple DVD Player will not - which is pretty annoying on machines without DVD drives.
Tweet it to them.
Thats the key. For me, 2x1.5 GHz G4 or 2x2.0 GHz G5 with H.264 support would be enough. Like on this video: PowerMac G5 and Internet Browsing in 2018. Here is a Radeon 6750 (2 GB) but works well with 7750 & R9 too.
As it is, Linux is the only option on PPC if you want hardware accelerated h264, however, G5s can go 1080P with the appropriate player - a Quad can just about do 4K too.
I've had 1080P playing on Powerbooks too but given the amount of quality degradation to make it work you may as well stick to 720P - personally, good quality 360P has always been enough for me on a portable.
Not on a 17" DLSD's 1680x1050 panel tho...The 360p or 480p is ok on Powerbook TFT displays.

That's not the point. It's too big anyway.
Oh wow, do you think they'll find an alternative hosting solution?GitHub has removed YouTube-dl! PPCMC YouTube-dl updater probably broken due to this FYI.
I was going to put PPCMC on GitHub but until further notice I can not, I’ll just keep putting it on the Garden.

Are you thinking about the other git repositories listed in that one article? That's a real pain Luckily, it's not the only game in town for the low end.

Ah, ok. I don't get the sense youtube-dl is going away entirely? I hope not, as I use it for downloading stuff on my main system as well. No, I'm thinking of the Viewtube script that works with Greasemonkey/NinjaKit and also the lua script that VLC uses.
