Edit: had another look at the G2 and it uses TB3 (USB-C) which means that an adapter with female ports on both sides would be required but I can't find any.
Yeah, I looked at pic of the G2 and didn't spot a TB2 connector but there is USB-C present. TB2 predates USB-C by year or two. And the G2 specs are vague, they just say there is TB-connector, not specifying the type. That is why I asked the questions above.

And no, you don't need a female-female adapter. You would need the Apple TB3 to TB2 adapter which has a male USB-C and female TB2. The USB-C plugs into the TB3 dock -connector and a TB2 cable to the other end. But, the adapter costs more than the G2 - or the Mac compatible Elgato TB2 dock which I have mentioned now many times.

And the G2 only has 1 TB-connector so you can only connect it to a computer with it. You cannot plug a TB hard drive etc. into it. Docks with 2 TB-connectors allow that too. For example an external TB NVMe -drive would really fly through it. In DCBassmans case the 21.5" iMac only has 1 TB2-connector so no way to connect any TB-devices to the machine after using a G2 dock. 27" 2011 iMacs have 2 connectors.

Ps. one good use for the Apples bidirectional adapter would possibly be connecting an TB3 eGPU case to a TB2 equipped Mac. Most eGPUs are TB3 so they are much easier and cheaper to find than long obsolete TB2 eGPU cases. And obviously one could use a TB3 case also with newer Intel Macs.

Would that route really work? I have that adapter and if the G2 were cheaper I'd be tempted to buy it to test and check this. The dock would actually be properly detected using one of the other ports instead the intended fixed TB3 cable as shown below?

Any suggestions on what would be the best OS-version for late 2006 iMac 5,1 with 3GB RAM? It supports from Tiger to Lion (10.4 - 10.7). Its not supported by Dosdude and OCLP -patches.

I have installation disks for:
1. Tiger
2. Leopard (+Sorbet)
3. Snow Leopard

Additionally I downloaded the Lion updater from Apple.

I have not used Snow Leopard since '09 so don't remember how it was compared to earlier ones. And I don't remember ever using Lion in any of my machines...maybe.

Which would you choose/recommend and why? Thanks!
I have unsupported Mavericks 10.9 on my 17 inch iMac 5,1 on both the internal drive and an external SSD Toshiba usb drive. Tend to use the external mre than the internal.

But lately Ive been using MX fluxbox from a 32MB usb stick. I removed Firefox and replaced it with LibreWolf which is a sort of cut down Firefox with emphasis on security.
Have a separate usb stick like that for the iMac 10,1 that Im using right now.

That USB-C cable (TB3) is on the front, IMO stupid placement for connecting to computer... Fixed? Doublestupid. Well, to make it work in any way you would need a female USB-C to USB-C adapter + the Apple adapter. But, no I have not tried if such a mess would work. ;) The Apple adapter is bidirectional so it works in both directions.

@ToniCH , what power unit does the Elgato dock take. One nearby without PSU.
There seems to be loads of them without PSU available. I wonder how hard it is to pick the PSU from the floor when decommissioning them from corporate use? The PSU is 12V 5A. Might be easier to pay few quid more and get one with the PSU. Lifted the PSU pics from ebay.

Hey, that is interesting. What is the process in installing the 10.9 to the iMac 5,1?

I ended up installing 10.6.8 and Mint 21 to my 5,1.

yes..Ive just been comparing your iMac specs with mine in the 'about your linux' thread. Look identical to mine.

I think I used a dosdude set up...a while back. Sorry Ton..being in my 70s my memory isn't as sharp as Id like. I'll see if I can hunt down the link I followed.

No problem, I am just curious. I looked at dosdudes site earlier and there is now only Sierra - Catalina patchers and 2006-2007 iMacs are among not supported models.

I know I started of with this:
Compatible Hardware Not Officially Supported

  • iMac (Late 2006, only 17" and 20" models with ATI GPUs have GPU acceleration. Early 2006 models with CPU upgraded to Core 2 Duo work as well.)

Thanks, I will investigate during the weekend. Good luck with the Pi. We are just closing on noon here. ;)

Used my iMac 10,1 to find links to set up PiCore on my raspberry Pi 2..ie LeafPad as a text editor, wifi working and Firefox (nightly.

Tunnel Shoot 09MBP.png

Today I played Tunnel Shoot X on my '09 MBP. It's a pretty simple shooter game (it's from 2011), however it's extremely fun, and also has one of the best video game soundtracks ever in my opinion.

Seems like there isn't any download online anymore, as it was a Mac App Store exclusive and no one has archived it yet.

I also compiled together some old dock themes that I had laying around on some of my hard drives and will be adding them to the Theming WikiPost soon.

I feel like you would really love Kenta Cho's Torus Trooper. I loved it to death back on my old MDD G4 running 10.5 back in the day. Sadly the only modern build I know if is 10.8/10.9 only, but maybe the Homebrew version works on newer OS versions. There is thankfully a web version, though.

Speed! More speed!

Speeding ship sailing through barrage, 'Torus Trooper'.

Well got my old 2011 Mac mini back from a friend who was using it for a few years to backup his iPhones and iPad devices. He has since moved on to an M1. Figured I would get some further use out of this mini as my kitchen computer to drive a 1080p TV.

I have been using my late 2008 MacBook Pro for the same purpose but didn't like how hot it got, and the fact that I always had a battery equipped system plugged in all the time.

I have upgraded the 2011 to Monterey, and just upgraded from 8gb to 16gb of RAM. With those updates and the already installed SSD, this system feels far more capable than my late 2008 system. Sadly, I didn't note current issues with these systems regarding HDCP, I am unable to watch any of my purchased iTunes / Apple TV purchases due to limitations of this systems GPU. Going to look into further patching, but preliminary results are not very promising at this point in time :( .

Check out my thread here! :D
Read it all, got inspired and looked around and found a cheap TB3 eGPU locally, bought it and should receive early next week. It's not the fastest around but let's see. Should work with older machines with the Apple adapter too. And I read it should be able to accelerate the internal display also.:D So, that will be interesting and widens the possible use even more. I'll give it a try when I get it and report back. I'll even post some benchmarks to your thread - if the experience is anything worth writing about. ;)

Sigh ... HDCP is such a pita. I am right there with you. I have read that in some instances, if screen sharing is turned on, turning it off fixes this which also worked for a buddy of mine. Also, fiddling with mirroring settings in sys prefs can fix the hdcp handshake. These scenarios seem to be hit or miss however with folks stating success and others not.

Apple TV/radio is one part of the Apple ecosystem I have stayed far away from having not invested in because of the seemingly inconsistent HDCP handshake performance. I've had a number of friends run into this over the years and the answer generally seems to be "buy the newest compliant device" which is stupid as the existing device worked two weeks ago and should work now. I don't accept that answer and is a 110% shyster move, holding your content purchases access hostage. I don't need that distraction from being in the here & now.

Regardless, best of luck to you. I hope one of those easy fixes works for you too :)

It is funny how we are punished for buying our media by constantly being plagued with issues related to HDCP and other DRM items.

  1. Need to authorize 1 of 5 computers
  2. Need ALSO authenticate to allowing your Device to download items (limit 10) (ZERO idea why this is required when you previously authenticate one of your 5 Mac devices previously)
  3. You need to successfully handshake HDCP to play the content you spent your own $$$ to purchase.

Torrent has never been an option for me, as I am a content creator and refuse to take work from fellow creators. That said, having all of these walls to overcome before I can play MY media is frustrating.

I will likely dig out an older AppleTV and just use that as the 2nd input in the Kitchen when I want to watch AppleTV or iTunes media. The Mini is far to useful to put in the back closet.

Use it to
- Watch YouTube
- Watch ripped videos that I have legally pulled from DVD Blu-Ray
- Watch downloaded content that doesn't have or require DRM
- browse websites
- Have access to applications that just don't exist on an AppleTV.
- Give (what Apple calls ready for recycling) another life in my home

This is fantastic. Please share everything in that thread, regardless of whether you feel it's worth writing about. We'll be the judge of that. ;) :D
