About 90% of Mac open-source software is 32bit, of which there used to be a thriving community. Now everything is tightly controlled around the AppStore.

The AppStore wielded significant (and from my experience, sometimes annoying) control long before the transition to 64 bit software. I haven't had any problems with finding 64 bit versions of every open-source program that I've run on Mojave and below - sans the AppStore, for that matter.

That's not up to me, but Apple in 3-5 years.

Apple will abandon us - that is inevitable but we'll soldier on, just as many of us have with our PPC and even 68K machines. :)

I've been managing to use Macs from the beginning without having an AppleID account. --What really hurts is the decline of the software-writing community, particularly for single-function utility widgets.

A brief list of 32bit software that don't have IMO adequate 64bit versions:
- MainMenu
- Himmelbar
- FindAnyFile (e.g., single-function utility widgets)
- Peggle, Peggle Nights, Angry Birds Seasons, etc.
(most 64bit games are pay-to-win & loaded with microtransactions)
- LogicPro9 and FinalCutPro7 (which have capabilities stripped out of later versions)
- various plugins for Photoshop CS6 Extended
- myriad browser extensions
Apple will abandon us - that is inevitable but we'll soldier on, just as many of us have with our PPC and even 68K machines. :)
Meanwhile, I have a Pop! OS Linux distro on a USB external that will boot almost anything I attach it to, and is as close yet to a truly hardware-independent OS as I've seen. (The existence of suchlike being the real ulterior motive of Apple and Windows "security"-laden machines making it excessively difficult to external-boot now.)

I just compile the software myself and presto I’ve got any binary I need. I even do this on my PowerBook, though compiling even a moderately complex package can take days with a G4. 😅

I finally was able to figure out how to get Lion on my macbook 4,1. I kept getting "The software could not be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading" error which prevented installation. What I did to fix this issue was to show the package contents of the Lion installer package >shared support>install ESD.img and click on "Install Mac OS X Lion".
Lion.jpg

Everything installed fine from there. No idea why its all frowns on this macbook. The same Lion package installs absolutely fine on every other early Intel Ive thrown at it from my 06 and 08 imacs to 08 & 09 aluminum macbook and macbookpros. Anyways this worked for the 4,1.

I know how frustrating thiat can be.....
In 2015 a human well... visituer/girlfriend/psycho wanted Lion on her White macbook that was a nuisance to install
i wish i never had that LION osx USC thumb drive i found i the trash 3 years earlier, b
ut after fiddling with the contents that finally booted!

then she wanted Snow Leopard back a few weeks later, which i time machined on a drive, behind her back.
so i faked installing a fresh then faked moving files from a drive she owned for an hour.
not that she was a legal student perusing a masters degree in law education.

enjoy the Lion on the white Macbook!

"The software could not be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading" is a BS warning that means a time-expiration period has elapsed.

You found the solution. There's nothing wrong with your laptop. (Now raid the coast of Madagascar for a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner 4 or 5, and start making bootable backups.)

I only use 1080 in handbrake which is good enough visual quality and sound.
this process takes 28 minutes for a 2 hour movie with a M1 mini.

hope this helped!
Intel Mac Pro Herę! Was able to do one perfect back up encoding of a DVD I own and then made the mistake of upgrading to latest Vs. of Handbrake and all of a sudden this started happening See below. Ive reinstalled a couple of times and tried to get settings to default but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

i would reinstall the older version if possible or fiddle with the dpi, settings and maybe a PRAM zap.
since 2009, i never tinkered with handbrake so i dont know the ins-out of the software.
i think i saw this somewhere else here on MR, and just took a sap back before replying.
MKV is another good dvd ripper with an extra step tho,

MBAir2010 ,Right thanks - went back to Vs. 1.5.1, the thing is I partioned my Trash Can so was trying this using Big Sur although as I said was able to get one perfect encode but think i may have overlooked deleting a preference file somewhere on the re-install. I could maybe try an an older MBP still on Mojave. And thanks for the MKV tip. Cheers.

It's interesting that you say this because when I first ran into this, in my mind I was thinking it was some bull akin to having to set your clock back appropriately to match macos certs in order to install later flavors or macos like setting your clock back to before 10-2019 in order for the el cap package to install for example. Then again there could be no relation at all but I did start to go down that rabbit hole before discovering the fix notated above.

:D

Insomnia has returned, so I decided to make good usage of my sleeplessness and sort through an HDD of DVB-T/T2 recordings using my 2011 MBP with High Sierra. I came across a classic that deserved to be watched and VLC easily took care of that. :)

A tour de force for Spielberg, Lucas and co. As well as cementing Harrison Ford's status as a stellar actor.

For those who are interested in the technical details, I losslessly muxed the original .TS 1080i broadcast file into a MOV using FFMPEG in Terminal many moons ago (with either Snow Leopard or Mavericks) so that I could perform top and tail editing more easily than the original format would allow and create a video file that would be compatible with most media players and A/V devices.

Why did I even bother with all of this when it's available on home video? This version of the film features a number of alterations and has never been made commercially available so it's nice to have a copy for my collection.

So MKV totally worked! Then used Handbrake and got a good encode - Thanks again.

I am trying to install Sonoma on a MacBook5,1. I had not even remembered that there was an aluminum MacBook once, at least long before the ones with the butterfly keys. I did get Ventura going with OCLP.

Today was "early Intel good", did many morning things on the retched macbook air 2010 while listening to music on a small JBL GO speaker (suertramp-final last words) now i need to update my numbers i accumulated on Libre Office.

I did set up my m1 mac mini Monterey and home pod minis to have movies playing while graphic designing on that 2010 macbook now, i stopped myself from buying a $200 BT speaker today since
i already have those mini speakers which are perfect for my 2 ears.

today is a good day to !

ouch, I would never put Sonoma on my enemies MacBook.....
but I understand your experimental fun on these early Intel Macs.

I'm have weird problems using Monterey/MacBook Air 2021 now
were my phone won't sync and text edit won't save a document
and spell check is garbage!
so this MBA goes back in the box!
Yeah, I'm not using it too much anymore. One of the fans died about two years ago so it gets really hot. And it only has 4GB of ram. But right now, it's showing me what I would be going through with installing Sonoma on my MacPro and later in late September on my Late '09 Mini. The MacPro has 32GB ram and the Mini has 8GB so it shouldn't be too bad for those two.

what happened with the fan?
several years ago a 12 mini lost the fan port ad i used a usb one and kept the lid open.
im glad those days are over!

i had to shut down the MBA ruining Monterey since things are fast, but not as smooth.

I was visiting my sister during Christmas. I heard weird noises while I was using the Mac and then they stopped. This is December in Seattle so there's snow and the furnace in the place we are staying at is trying to keep up. So, there wasn't a whole lot of heat at the time.

Get back to Phoenix and when the weather gets warmer I finally notice that one fan is doing X speeds while the other is at zero. So, that told me what those weird noises were.

Mojave in an HFS+ partition is the way to fly.

Allright. Well, now my Intel 2008 MBP is more updated than my 2023 M2!

Running a little slow right now, but I am attributing that to things needing to settle out after an upgrade.

Root patches installed so I've got trackpad and keyboard working at this time.

Re your previous mention of Sonoma on late 09 Mini - it'll be faster than that Macbook, but not much. Not terribly usable. Ran patched Catalina pretty well, though! Mine has a 256GB SSD and a terabyte spinner replacing the ODD.

That particular Mini is primarily used as a 'boredom alleviation device'. It's in the garage and my only intent when out there is to either be working on InDesign files or browsing the net/YouYube. I've never used it or intended to use it for anything serious, so short of it just being a flat out sluggard it should not matter too much.

The MBP isn't annoying me (yet) so we'll see I guess. The thing about these particular Macs is that they hold no importance as far as data or purpose so while it'd be annoying to wipe them and start over with some other OS, it's not a big deal.

My MacPro on the other hand…ugh…yeah, no.
