Oohh, 'tis murky in 'ere...

Both CPU and MCH heatsinks were barely screwed into place. MCH thermal paste a real mess. And looking at the "special coating" on the CPUs and heatsinks, good thermal contact was not happening. This coating seens solid and silvery, almost like solder. Certainly doesn't wipe off with isopropyl. Think I'll just re-install a bit tighter and see how it goes.

Memtest running...
Lots of fun getting the SuperDrive to eject. Currently running outside the main chassis!

At least yours has a SuperDrive. For a while, I couldn't understand why mine wouldn't eject and finally realised that something was amiss when I checked System Profiler and couldn't find any details for it.

I disassembled the machine and discovered that the drive had been removed. :D

Although Memtest is running ok, even this simple screen has artefacts, so loking like graphics.

Ah, that's good news because the graphics card can be easily remedied. If the boot screen isn't an issue for you, a compatible PC card can be used - which is exactly what I did with my 2006 Mac Pro.

Ah...that would explain it!

The seller was kind enough to knock a tenner off the asking price and it now has a better unit than the stock one anyway. :)

There seems to loads of Mac HD 5770s in ebay.uk. Note that you need an extra power cable for the 5770. Maybe you have the correct one already? Some are sold with the cable which makes it easier.

It's the middle of the night and I can't get back to sleep, so I ran PhotoScape X on my 13" 2012 MBP w/ Ventura and created some collages of my phone repairs and resurrection projects.*

*This was something that began during the COVID lockdowns when my phone became damaged and everywhere that could've fixed it were shut, so I decided to repair it myself, which led to a family member asking if I could sort out their iPhone, which in turn led to me becoming confident enough to purchase dead/faulty iPhones from eBay, repair and gift them to those around me on low incomes who needed smartphones.

Plans for the cMP 3,1:
1) Get it working!
2) Things to fit include one drive sled (original probably still attached to the previous owner's HDD), lots of drives, Radeon when it gets here, and a USB3 PCIe card, assuming it won't cause any problems. Oh, need an SSD, too.
3) Decide what to install on it. If macOS, will be Catalina. Linux = MX
4) SSD ordered. I have a sled adaptor somewhere in the cupbaords. Somewhere...

It won't cause any problems at all! :)

If you haven't already, take a look here for recommendations and feedback on compatible USB 3.x PCIe cards for the cMP. After I moved from El Capitan to Mavericks on my 2006 Mac Pro and installed the right driver, my 3.x card was rock solid, alongside eSATA too. :D

5) Drives and sled converter rediscovered and set ready. USB3 card also found. Missing sled sourced.

Hope not. Had a read; the chip on my card is D720201, which isn't mentioned in that list. Will see what happens.

I hope it's not a SATA one because the machine deserves better.
If its SATA then the OWC Accelsior S will provide a good improvement (around double or more) vs. the internal SATA bus, which is super slow.

But even any of the cheap dummy NVMe to PCIe cards + a NVMe SSD will triple the performance vs the Accelsior S.

And the expensive NVMe adapter cards with some intelligence can about double the transfer speeds of the cheap cards. Not worth it unless one is after max performance - or finds a second hand one cheap.

All these options need to be installed to a 16x PCIe slot.
