It's the 1.6GHz core 2 duo/2gb of ram with 80gb hdd, 2008 base model, sadly i cannot find the ssd for it.

Thanks for the info. :)

I've got a couple of MBA's myself: 2010 C2D and 2011 i5, so I'm always interested in seeing how other people put theirs to use and the spec, especially when they're doing interesting and creative things with it. :D

A couple of days ago, I felt like I was back in my zone once more — rapid-scraping all-but-lost music videos from YT (and omitted/untouched by VEVO or the other major outlets which are notorious for IP blocking entire nation-states from having access), in preparation for a new round of curatorial work for my music video library.

I did this using @alex_free ’s IMC (PPCMC 7.2.6 for Intel) and doing so on Snow Leopard — running it all from the convenience of an A1261 MacBook Pro. In one evening, I pulled down almost 16GB of mostly-SD rips of music videos which have been virtually lost to time. (Oh yes, lest I forget: the browser behind the scenes is @wicknix ’s Interweb. :D )

The ability to move so quickly felt sincerely like peeling back years of YT’s efforts to track, bloat, prioritize newer processors, advertise, and further thwart one from being able to do just this — back when a YT page pulled up fast and one could still use a long-gone browser add-on called Complete YT Saver. (But this isn’t nostalgia: YT search has always been pure basura.)

Today I received one of those cheap USB-C to regular USB dongles. I ordered one because I was getting annoyed at using the built in audio output on my late 2006 iMac. It’s fine for regular speakers but for headphones and especially IEMs its just wayyy too noisy. I assume it’s just not shielded properly like on many laptops.
Well, I use one of those Apple USB-C to 3.5mm dongles with my iPad and that little DAC is surprisingly good and there’s pretty much zero noticeable noise. So I thought “what if this will work on my iMac?”

And guess what? I absolutely does! Not only is the sound much improved, it also recognises it in the settings!

So my tip to you all when your iMac or Macbook has a noisy output, just buy one of those little Apple dongles if you don’t have one already!!

I have at least 2 videos that no longer exist on YouTube in my archive. This is a huge use case of mine with PPCMC7.

Me too, how's your 2010 perform today? Just done a little bit of work yesterday (timestamping a documentation photos with a PS) with my original air

The problem is just like @Amethyst1 said, the original air runs hot and become really slow when it hot, a really cool room temperature and a good notebook cooler would do the job cooling it down when i'm working with it.?

Almost forgot, @Amethyst1 how's the ssd performs? At least does it boot faster with the ssd?

There's so many YT videos across various genres that have vanished from cyberspace and I wish I'd archived them. Nowadays I immediately archive anything that I enjoy watching as a pre-cautionary measure.

My music video library is a veritable sanctuary of music videos which have been disappeared from YT.

The DMCA was a mistake.

TB HDDs are so cheap now !

Yes! I bought a pack of 4TB HDDs last year and I've put most of them to use for video archiving. Originally I was going to use them to overhaul my Mac Pro 1,1 and PM G5 but as you mentioned, they're now so cheap that I can always get some more without breaking the bank. :)

Mine is running Catalina, Snow Leopard and Mojave - all without a hitch: on just 2GB RAM. :D

Over the last 12 months I've used it for numerous tasks including video editing, gaming, watching HDTV recordings and web browsing - including Amazon Prime Video marathons whenever the trial offers resurface. Everything up to 1080p plays great on the little screen and looks superb when connected to TV via the DisplayPort and run in dual display mode.

The PS stuff is interesting. What resolution, size and format are the photos that you work with and how long does it take the 2008 to process them with the timestamping?

The UK is no better:

Making Personal Copies of Your CDs, MP3s Ruled Illegal in the U.K.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Now i'm convinced that the 2gb of ram on the original air is not the problem why it's slow ?

1080p video is also playable on the 2008 air (local playback) but after 2-3 mins, it started to lag and skipped a frame ?
What game did you play on it? I still remember I was able to play 2013 tomb raider on my 2010 MBP running high sierra back then, the fps is not great but still playable.
I'm so glad that the 2010 air's still going strong! I always have a soft spot for all the macs released on 2010.

The yesterday's project resolution is 1280x960 (whatsapp compressed images), all photos is jpeg, i manually create the the stamp layer and put the photos below the stamp layer one by one, it's quite fast at processing multi layer images which surprise me actually, maybe because the photos i edit always the low res ones.

@Amethyst1 Wish I could find it, i've been searching for the small ssd for a month now to no avail *sad

This is the SSD that was an option for the original MBA.

This is an adapter to use newer mSATA SSDs. (Disclaimer: I have no idea if it’s any good.)

There are also adapters to use CompactFlash cards but if I were to go down the adapter route, I’d go for an mSATA SSD (first).

I ought to add how being able to so quickly find and grab high-def remasters of music videos with (e)IMC/PPCMC, without having to hunt for the right flag to use with YT, is really clearing my sinuses.

Old, on file for years:

New, grabbed quickly with (e)IMC/PPCMC:

I have that exact adapter (or at least the PCB looks identical), and it didn’t work for my early 2008 Air. I’m not sure if it was a problem with this particular adapter or an issue with my mSATA drives not being backwards-compatible with SATA I, which is what the JM20330 chipset on that PCB expects.
I think that the JM20330 has been known to work in PowerBooks and iPods.
Some day, I’ll get my hands on a logic analyzer and figure out what’s going wrong with mine...

Do yall have the CD-R music tax? I have a bunch of Maxell 'music' CD-Rs (burned Dreamcast games to them). What is a 'music' CD-R you might be wondering? It is just more expensive because of a tax that goes to record labels because CD-RS dont have any copy protection (I'm not joking). I bought them from a pharmacy store just because I could get them in person that day (now I use verbatim strictly).

Yep. Most stand-alone HiFi audio CD recorders only accept those — for the very reason you mention.
Seriously? You cant record to a CD-R unless it is a 'music' CD-R? Just another reason to use general computing tech instead.
