I took an iPhone 7 from about a month after launch until an iPhone 12 Pro about a month after launch. Definitely in the 4+ years category.

It would be nice to not upgrade from my 12 pro until there’s a foldable iPhone in a few years but I am weak

My 4. Even after I tried to update to the 5 (returned it) and did the same with 6, I kept coming back to it. The alloy and glass, along with the size will always be my favorite design.

So about 4-5 years.

iPhone 11 Purple 64GB from December 7, 2019 to July 23rd, 2021. Then it got its cameras and Face ID water damaged on the 22nd so it had to be replaced under AppleCare. Then I kept my replacement phone till October 15 when I upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro Max

iPhone 7 128GB Jet Black Purchased September 2017, replaced with an iPhone 13 mini 256GB Midnight July 2022. Wouldn't have replaced it but the phone was overheating so bad it would just freeze constantly and couldnt load web pages.

I was around from the earliest days of iPhone when internet access was well...like a 300 baud modem. I stayed until iphone 5 then jumped over to Samsung/Android because there were certain things I wanted that Apple simply made unavailable. I recently came back to 13 pro max and happy with both the hardware and the changes in the software and happy Apple is starting to listen.

My first smartphone was an iPhone 4S and it was actually the longest I held onto a smart device until my  Watch Series 4.

  • iPhone 4S: 3 Years
  • iPhone 6: 1.5 Years
  • iPhone SE: 1.5 Years
  • iPhone 8 - iPhone 13 Pro: 1 Year each

I skipped the 11 series and as soon as I received my 12 Pro Max, I put myself on a 2 year upgrade cycle, so I’ll be upgrading to the 14 Pro Max.
I just don’t want to regret my purchase if the 15 PM comes out with USB-C. However, I’m trying to resist the urge to upgrade especially with AOD. We will see next month.

Currently my iPhone 11 Pro. It’s still fast, takes great photos and offers everything I need. With an Apple Watch I do not need any AOD (tbh, on my watch it’s deactivated and only running in theatre mode). I think I‘ll skip the 14 and wait for an USB-C device.

In the past I upgreaded yearly but now? There‘s to less new, older devices still work and I’m getting older. It gets replaced if it’s broken or unusable…

That has been my experience as well. The iPhone 7, 8, SE2 and SE3 all seem to perform about the same to me. Noticed a big difference between the 5 and 7, but after that I guess they all have been more powerful than I need.
Interesting to read this. I tend to agree, even though my SE2 seemed faster than the 7 when I upgraded in 2020, looking back now in 2022, I wonder if that was just my imagination. Seems like most iphones and apple products tend to slow down at 2-3 years, maybe due to the upgraded OS… : /

iPhone 7 Gold Rose 32GB here, since 2016, waiting for the 14PM to finally upgrade! It's still a great phone although battery life (and capacity) is extremely small, 32GB is way below par for storage in 2022, no more iOS updates after iOS 15, and the camera is showing its age. I must give credit for it not giving me a single issue in almost 6 years!

First iPhone: 4S. A beast. It lasted more than 4 years, I think 5 years and half. A Chinese-made screen protector have blast the screen, and in those times it was harder to replace it.
iPhone SE. Bought in 2018, replaced last years. So 3 years and something.
Now, iPhone 11. Bought last year, from Swappie. It was my first (as a gift) refurbished phone, and I loved it. I will just buy refurbished now, from dedicated brands.

My 7 plus I used from February 2017 until December 2021 when I got the 13 Pro Max. I still have it in a box, it could use a new battery and will not be getting anymore iOS upgrades but it will surely be useful for someone. (Thinking of family or friend's kids). I used to do every 2 year upgrades but went through an employment change in 2017 and realized I didn't need to do that especially given how long Apple supports their hardware.

I've only bought 3 smartphones in total, all iPhones and all of them at or close to launch dates. I went from 3GS to 5 and then from 5 to X. The next one is very likely to be a 14 Pro Max.

3GS -> 5: 3 years
5 -> X: 5 years
X -> 14 Pro Max: 5 years

The 3 year jump from 3GS to 5 was huge technology improvement wise even though it was just 3 years between. 5 to X was a big jump but that's expected for 5 years of improvements. I think X to 14 will be the most underwhelming of the 3 upgrades because of how well my X is holding up today.

I too tend to buy my devices close to launch date.

3G -> 4 : 2 years
4 -> 7 : 6 years
7 -> 13 Pro : 5 years

Yes, I hold onto my devices a long time. No, I’ve never broken an iPhone (although I did nearly lose one once). Yes, I always go caseless.

I like the feeling of getting a real jump in technology each time I buy a phone.

Same here, caseless and never broken a phone. Also I generally started removing my phone from the charger if I see it above 80%. My iPhone X has 83% battery capacity after >1850 charge cycles so I didn't even need a new battery. Can't wait to feel how much better a 14 Pro Max will be.

I kept my 8 from March ‘18 to Dec ‘20 which was when it was replaced with a 12 Mini. That’s 2 years and 9 months.
