Was wondering what your reasons were for getting a new and improved iPhone…

Many of us hang on to our phones for years before upgrading. Others buy more frequently. Was wondering what was behind your upgrade. Perhaps that will give us slow adopters reasons to upgrade!

After all, new toys are always great fun!

You can pick more than one choice. For “Other”, please explain in a comment. All insights, reasons, and observations welcome!

Any place but here or there....
My SE2 is wearing down and flaking out (partly my fault, I’ve dropped it a lot recently. It’s intact, but acting wonky.)

Grateful that Apple announced another SE on Tuesday. I just decided to order yesterday shortly before the store went back up because phone was acting up. Glad I did. I do not need the bells and whistles of the more powerful phones; I’d rather put that money into iPads or another Mac.

I am not one of those insane people who upgrades every year… I mean what possible benefit can you gain from one year of minor iteration?

I normally upgrade every 2-3 years which is still decedent as my iPhone 8 was still perfectly fine in 2020 when I switched to the 12 Mini. I guess I just wanted to go back to the iPhone 5 style chassis which I believe is the apex of smartphone design. To basically have a modern iPhone 5 with no Touch ID is a dream… I saw the concept art for this phone back in 2019 before it became a reality and always said I’d buy it if such a device were ever released.

As much as I’d like a 13 Mini, I have decided to hang fire because, other than the additional 64gb storage, I wouldn’t notice any difference in day-to-day use. The A14 is such a monster chip that the A15’s improvements would be imperceptible to 99% of users.

If I were to upgrade my 7+, it would be for a better battery life. I don’t have any issues with the 7+ performance, but the A10 is just not that efficient for 2022 usage. The phone has mediocre battery life when in use (despite healthy battery), and it gets hot quite easily.

And I don’t want smaller screen, but I would love a smaller form factor. My S21 is a joy to use. The 13 mini is quite attractive and hopefully it will get discounted to reasonable price this year or the next.

Smaller screen is certainly not a reason to „upgrade“. Smaller form factor is tho. I’d love to, when I upgrade, get a 13 Mini with 125GB in green. Probs not gonna happen but my 11P is too big to be comfortable to use.
I could go with an SE 1st gen if the screen and camera were better and the thing was water resistant. Just give me a small all around tool. Here’s hoping the Mini will make a return one day.

I typically have multiple reasons for upgrading. For instance, I usually wait 5-6 years before upgrading my phone (as long as the battery hasn’t gone kersploey by then). But when I do upgrade my current phone I’ll be gaining Night Mode, OLED, better performance, Telephoto, Ultra Wide, Portrait Mode for objects, Cinematic Mode, etc.

Because I want to.

I need a device to make phone calls, send texts and emails and snap infrequent pictures of stuff at the grocery store (so my wife can see what she wants me to bring home).

Any old Android can do that and I do not need a bazillion megapixels so my wife can make a choice between flavors of Cheerios or brands of tartar sauce. But I prefer iOS, and that only runs on Apple devices.

So, I get a new iPhone because I like how it looks. I know it will already do what I need it to do.

Over time I’ve been wanting to not carry my DSLR so many places. I was planning my first trip to Europe in many many years, and that was the tipping point where I decided to trade in my existing phone and get one with a top camera, which is something I’d never done before (previous three phones: 5c, SE 2016, SE 2020).

The unlikely outcome was that I DIDN’T get the 13 pro I thought I would. In the end I got the 13 mini. Still a great camera, just not the best one they offer. But I had gotten into the headspace where I was going to upgrade, and I pulled the trigger.

Other. I got a 2020 SE because they quit supporting 2G in my area (was using a cheep android). I'll use it until they quit supporting 3G or 4G or whatever this thing uses.
I tend to do the same with my 'pooters, use them until I can't anymore.

I upgraded because I ended up paying less monthly due to a special promotion I was able to access through my carrier. I wanted to upgrade because of ProMotion mostly. My phone before was an 11 Pro and the slightly bigger screen is nice.

Went from 11PM to 13PM because I paid it off and was able to trade it in for a good amount.

Wanted ProMotion and the new design, mostly :) Been waiting for 120Hz for a long time.

Two years was the longest I’d kept a phone in a while — trying to be a *little* bit smarter with my spending habits lol

I’m on the IUP and just enjoy each iteration of the iPhone and learning the new features. If the 14PM’s camera is recessed, I may just end my IUP and stick with the 14PM for a while. Before I joined the IUP, I kept my phones for 2 years before upgrading again.

FaceID. Although many people love their TouchID, others prefer FaceID and upgraded to the iPhone X and later models because of it. I was one of them. TouchID never worked for me and would forget my prints every 2 days or so.
