FaceID. Although many people love their TouchID, others prefer FaceID and upgraded to the iPhone X and later models because of it. I was one of them. TouchID never worked for me and would forget my prints every 2 days or so.
Face ID is one of my favorite features on iPhone, hopefully apple get a move on and bring it to more devices.

Looking at you iPad mini, iMac, MacBooks. ?

I’m on the IUP and just enjoy each iteration of the iPhone and learning the new features. If the 14PM’s camera is recessed, I may just end my IUP and stick with the 14PM for a while. Before I joined the IUP, I kept my phones for 2 years before upgrading again.
Can’t wait for the iPhone 17 with the M1 Big Mac chip. ?

Among the starlings
I was determined to hang onto my original SE until Apple came out with another phone I could use one-handed.

Then I went in for a battery replacement and they told me the current battery was about to explode and the charging controller was fried and replacing it would cost as much as a new phone. Replacing the battery resulted in it being unable to charge beyond 3%.

So I settled for a Mini. Which I drop at least twice a day because it’s just a bit too big. Good thing I’m short so it doesn’t have all that far to fall.

And I really miss touchId.

I am updating to a SE 2022 from a SE 2020. The battery is getting degraded and I really like the specs on the new SE.

I checked “smaller screen”, but I guess “smaller overall form factor” would be a more accurate way to put it. After more than 2.5 years with the iPhone XR I was really tired of having to carry around such a big device that was super uncomfortable to use with one hand. Great phone otherwise, but just too big for me. Didn’t want to spend too much money, so I picked up a 2020 SE. I kind of miss tap to wake (a feature I just took for granted) and the battery life isn’t the best. Apart form those things the phone has been great! I’ve come to the realization that I value power, portability and price in a phone and I think the SE is a good combination of those features.

Way out in space
Faster: I tend to keep devices for a long time and they invariably slow down over time.
Bigger screen: I like to read books and write notes and I have tired eyes.
Better camera: Although this has probably maxed out, because most modern phones take good pictures now.
Battery life: Batteries degrade + technology gets a little better over time.

Bonus criteria - FaceID: Not essential, but convenient, and I miss it on every device that doesn't have it.

The last iPhone I unnecessarily upgraded from was the iPhone 7 Plus, I just need that iPhone X

I used that iPhone X from December 2017 through to April 2021 - then the battery degradation seriously started to impact day to day for me. The phone still performed so I got the battery replaced by Apple - then the earpiece died so phone calls had to be on speaker or through headphones. As I got into the summer I was getting busier and the earpiece issue was becoming harder to live with so I bought the iPhone 12 Pro in June 2021. I shall use that for as long as it serves it’s purpose. Will be no need to upgrade until it stops functioning as I need it to, will likely need a battery change some point in year 3

Yeah, I bought 6s in 2015 and it still pristine and running well until now (used by my son). The battery had been replaced 2 times.

My pristine 6S was fired back into its box in 2018 and shoved into a dark cupboard along with the rest of my old tech. I have a friend who still runs a 6S as his daily driver to this day… surprised at how well it copes with basic functionality. Still a very usable phone in the present day.

iPhone XS Max --> iPhone 13 Pro

  • Smaller screen/device - was tired of having such a bulky, cumbersome device that provided no benefits over a more ergonomic device
  • Better screen - ProMotion and brighter screen (650 nits vs 1000 nits)
  • Better battery life - Apple improved on battery life a lot in the 11 and 13 series
  • 5G + WiFi 6 - specifically the Snapdragon X60 which is much more efficient than the X55 in the 12 series and allows for carrier aggregation
  • Color - Gold iPhone 12/13 Pro/Max is my favorite looking iPhone of all time. I figured we’d get a design change next year, so I didn’t want to miss it. I also really regretted playing it safe with the XS Max and getting Space Grey instead of the gold color I really wanted.
  • Camera - Night Mode capability. I tend to favor low light/night photos and always wanted to be able to take them myself.
I felt bad upgrading when my XS Max was still running like brand new, but I had a lot of daily irritations with the device (being too large, bad cell reception, worsening battery, 4G only when 5G was better in my area, not being able to take night photos) that the 13 Pro has fixed. It’s been a great quality of life update, which are my favorite iPhone updates.

In a van down by the river
I buy when new when I think I can actually make use of new features and or a better form factor (which was the case with the 12 and 13 mini). I will be sticking with my 13 minis unless Apple shocks us all with a 14 mini.

In the middle of the night a couple of days after posting this poll — and before I revisited the thread — I suddenly realized — as several of you pointed out — that “smaller screen” was a misnomer.

I definitely should have made that choice “smaller device” or “smaller form factor”!

Alas, I see no option for editing the choices such as adding a parenthetical “Smaller screen (or smaller device)”. Only thing that can be done is to add a new choice! Which would mess up interpreting the results for that choice.

In any event, appreciate the replies. Please keep those cards and letters coming in, folks! There's good info in these responses to help owners think about different reasons to upgrade — and to spur me to considering an upgrade of my iPhone SE 2016!

So far, better screen, better camera, and worn down battery lead the pack!

But don’t know if I want normal or pro due
To the size

In the fall Verizon had a deal where if my wife and I traded in our 11’s we would get the 13’s for free so we did it. If it wasn’t for that deal we would still be using the 11’s (but I’m glad, very happy with the 13).

The only reason I am currently thinking of a new iPhone (currently have an iPhone 12 Pro Max), is that I am tired of having a large phone. Not sure what the point is. After all, I hardly use my phone now - working remote and all that. Plus, I have a Mac Mini M1. And, I tend to use that (iMessage, FaceTime, etcetera) most of the day...
