Honestly, FOMO and impulsivity. lol. There was nothing wrong at all with my 8+, I was just bored and wanted something new. I discovered I absolutely hate Face ID though, after cycling through 4 different phones thinking the next one would work better. Nope. Maybe I'm just that hideous but it fails on me probably a good 50% of the time no matter how much I tweak the settings or re-register my face. Picked up a 256gb 8+ from the Apple refurbished store and am kicking myself for spending so much money 😣
Sorry to hear that. As a last ditch attempt, setup the FaceID one more time, but, be sure to be in good lighting. Hopefully that helps...

And the insane battery life.
ABSOLUTELY!!! 🔋👑

90% 🔋 left, 2h6m usage.

Draining slower than these Melbourne Sunday drivers.

Usually a mix of wanting a newer/faster phone and waiting for a deal.

Upgraded from the 4 to the 6 once it launched, since the 4 wasn't getting iOS 8 and I wanted a larger phone.

Upgraded from the 6 to the 7+ after about 2.5 years for longer battery life and the larger screen.

Upgraded from the 7+ to the 8+ after a little over two years since I was able to get a deal for a 256GB Product Red model, and it only cost about $550 new. I didn't want the XR because I wanted to keep the telephoto lens, and I didn't want to pay for the XS Max.

Took advantage of an Apple trade-in deal to go from the 8+ to a standard 12. I still miss having the telephoto, but my 8+ was heavy enough already and the 12 Pro was a step too far, plus the cost.

Unfortunately I've tried this several times already :/ I really don't know why face ID hates me so much, sometimes it would fail if I just put on makeup. If I wasn't looking directly at it, even with require attention off, it just wouldn't work. I would have thought I had a bad sensor if it didn't happen on every phone.

I got my previous iPhone 7 plus in February 2017 and have used the heck out of it, changed the battery once at the end of 2018 but thought it time.

Another idea, if you happen to visit an Apple shop, gain assistance in having it setup, and test it in the shop. Maybe an Apple employee can give some direction during the process...

I have an iPhone 6 and did not want to spend around $1,000.00 for an iPhone with 5G. I recently upgraded to the new iPhone SE 2022 and plan to use it until the first generation of iPhones with 6G gets released, at least.

I usually buy 1-2 generations back which are still sold by Apple as new.

A lot of people get a new iPhone just because of new cellular plan and iPhone “look like” much cheaper with it but actually the 5g plan earns a lot of money for the provider.

Honestly another big reason is to “show off”, at least for some people but not me. This should be the real biggest reason people buy latest Pro every single year.

In its case.
I had used an iPhone 8 Plus for almost 4 years, and figured I would hang on to it until I had it for 5 - but my wife needed a new phone, and when we went over to TMO the 13 on display stole my heart - I played with it for a while, then got it. It's a smaller phone than the 8 Plus, but has a larger screen. The processor is much faster, the screen is better, etc.

Psychology and human nature, that is how Apple is making the big money. It's so hard to stop yourself buying the new shiny thing available.

Yeah Apple knows the Psychology game too well, especially you watch the annual event and then you would just want to buy it no matter what.

Upgraded to the 13 Pro Max on March 7 after having an 8 Plus for 3 years. (2019) About the same number of years i had my 6S before i got the 8 Plus. (2016)

The Pro's camera interested me, also my 8 Plus's battery was draining a bit faster in recent months.
I chose the Pro Max because i wanted to keep a similar size to what i had with the 8 Plus.

I'm still getting used to having FaceID tho, it works good for me, i just keep forgetting to not have the phone so close to my face when i unlock or when i use Apple Pay.

A few years ago, I went from a 7+ to a refurbished 8+, because my 7+ had a bad charging port, and that model wasn’t available any longer.

A few months ago, I did an AppleCare swap to a new (refurbished) 8+, due to… a bad charging port.

(P.S. I now use wireless charging as much as possible...)

In the past, I only upgraded twice—once because my old iPhone got bricked by an update, and once because I wanted Apple Pay (security reasons).

In the future, I would upgrade for one or multiple of the following reasons (depending):
- smaller screen (phones are too big these days for my liking, even the smallest iPhones)
- better camera (I also voted for night mode but I think that is part of camera).
- other:
- more storage
- bring back Touch ID
- bring back a thick chin or forehead bezel
- foreword facing speakers
- Mac MagSafe-like charging/data-syncing port
- some feature I didn’t know I needed like Apple Pay
- something happens to my current iPhone

It really concerns me that worn batteries is the top reason people replace their phones (tied with better camera). I implore people to not let degraded batteries be the main reason to upgrade. Batteries are consumable. It’s kind of like replacing a car because the tires wore out. Companies do everything they can to keep consumers from realizing that device battery replacement should be common, and that compared to buying a new device it is very inexpensive. Not only is it financially wise, it is environmentally wise.
Please let it be for any other reason, even if you just want to upgrade out of boredom, but just let it not be mainly because of degraded battery.
