Just watched Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name) last night. Highly recommend to any otaku out there.

Visually stunning. The gorgeous backgrounds makes the characters seem out of place.😕 The story is a chimera of sort a mixture of Prince and the Pauper, Serendipity and Deep Impact). It starts out with the Prince and the Pauper type trading places/body swap. But there's a twist, they're 3 years apart. The girl had died in the meteor hit 3 years prior. I loved the red thread of fate theme.🤗

It was interesting that it was the most "spy" like movie with few of the "toys" he had in the later movies.
I dont mind the "toys" as long as they are done well, in that they fit well with the storyline. Admittedly I prefer the more grounded Bond films. The good is generally the franchise changes the tone of the films as a new lead is brought in. So you can pick and choose your flavour of Bond to suit the mood :)

Right now I dont have high hopes as expecting a long wait and a rather diluted Bond. If so I'd rather prefer EON Productions simply let "sleeping dogs lie" and retire Bond...

Be a tragedy if Bond goes the same way as so many other franchises have done in recent years, bowing down to highly vocal minority mobs...

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold (1965)

The acclaimed, best-selling novel by John le Carré, about a Cold War spy on one final dangerous mission in East Germany. Directed by Martin Ritt a film every bit as precise and ruthless as the book. Richard Burton is superb as Alec Leamas, whose relationship with the beautiful librarian Nan, played by Claire Bloom, puts his assignment in jeopardy. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is a hard-edged and tragic thriller, suffused with the political and social consciousness of the day...

One of the greatest Cold War spy thrillers ever produced; storyline unravels slowly with purpose, deeply theatrical yet calculated, sharp as a razer when the need arises. Criterion Collection remains to be the best way to watch being beautifully restored to a high-definition digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack.

I never saw the movie but I read and enjoyed John le Carré‘s novel. I’ll be adding it to my list of films to watch.

I think it already went that way with Craig. His first flick was decent but after that they are mostly glum un-fun affairs. I finally brought myself to watch the latest one and cheered when he died in that hilarious death scene.

I got around to rewatching Casino. First 40 - awesome. Act two - rather tedious. Act 3 - redeemed act 2 for the most part. Complicated movie. Feels like it should be better than it is. Tough act to follow Goodfellas though.

I like Casino Royal myself, the darker Bond works well. Quantum of Solace the weakest for multiple reasons. Skyfall I also liked, with a powerful send off for Judy Dench. Spectre another weak effort reliant on the established 007 formula.
No Time to Die too long and overly indulgent, still better than Quantum of Solace & Spectre.

I would just prefer EON Productions went back to the roots and presented Ian Fleming's Bond warts and all. Sadly these days good films are hard to come by for all the obvious reasons. TBH if they cant do Bond well I'd rather EON retired the franchise rather than drive it into ground like so many others have done by churning out worthless garbage...

There is no point telling you what I watched except maybe a place on IMDB. I basically go to the last remaining DVD/CD store and then look in the bargain bin box for the most unwanted movies there. Then I buy the ones with the director’s commentary. I watch the movie and then watch it again with the commentary. For those that know, this is where the real entertainment happens.

BTW: If a movie has the director’s commentary available then the director is proud of the movie. If not move on.

You may disagree, I can take it, :) but I was thrilled that Quantum was an excellent direct continuation of the story. Quantum could be the most realistic feeling, sinister secret organization seen in the Bond ecosystem.

What kind of movies have you found in the bargain bin, that impressed you? :)

Casino Royal-Quantum of Solace- I would argue that as a tie in to CR, that QoS was a wonderful story some of the best performances I’ve seen in any action movie, that starts with a bang, some of the best choreographed action and tightly edited sequences I have ever seen in a Bond movie.

And the story, the woman that Bond actually loved, (I think a first) pushed Daniel Craig’s James Bond into the realm of human, instead of a shallow hound dog working for King and Country, bedding every female that falls all over him as a matter of course.

Quantum “We’re everywhere”, in the real of dated sinister organizations like Spectre, came across as the most realistically feeling threat to democratic Republics around the World, epitomized by Dominic Greene and Green Planet. The opera sequence was impressive and immersive, such atmosphere! :)

Such a threat, I was shocked that this organization (Quantum) was dropped as a concern in follow on movies. And finally, the Rene Mathis story arc, effected me emotionally, compounded by Agent Field the first time in a Bond movie, I felt sad, was actually emotionally vested. Don’t forget about Camille, the woman out to revenge a traumatizing event of cruelty in her youth, an event that shaped her life. A could not ask any more from an action movie that both excited me and provoked the range of emotions I felt. :)

This was the first James Bond I saw as a child, and the fight on the train remains etched in my memory. From that era, it struck me as the best, primarily because of story, good characters, and it was not over the top with gadgetry. Note, the cat fight included in the female imagery of the poster, to peak the interest… :)

I think the reason Quantum of Solace comes across as being "weak" is that it's sandwiched between Casino Royale & Skyfall the strongest outings of the Daniel Craig era. Quantum of Solace also got hung up with the writers strike of the period which undoubtedly had it's impact on the production.

Over all Quantum of Solace has to exist as it's the bridge between Casio Royale & Skyfall. Think I'll find time to watch the films in sequence as they gel together as a trilogy. Spectre is what it is and the final film wasn't impressed by No Time to Die despite the efforts.
