I don't need an explanation, I just voiced my preference for more ports on an upcoming model, I don't need snide remarks from the cheap seats.
But you know the deal. You know the new models have replaced the old models, port for port. And you know what’s likely to be coming. So all you’re doing is complaining for nothing. If after the transition is complete they have not released an option with more ports, then you have a point. Until the next models are released - which replace the 4 port models, all you’re doing is whinging for nothing. And the thing is you know it. I’m just calling you and all the others that keep repeating the same nonsense. So you have a nice day whilst you’re waiting for the new model which is suited to you, or you move on and buy something else. ?

I really don't see Apple returning to USB-A after 6 years of USB-C. It would be a really, really, weird move. What's next? BluRay in 2022 and Firewire in 2023? Followed by VGA in 2024 and LPT in 2025.
I dunno, USB-A has never left the desktop Macs, including the 2020 Mac mini M1 and iMac 27" intel, which to me is an acknowledgement that people continue to use it. I'd love to see it return to MacBooks also.

Desktop Mac users are more likely to use USB based keyboards and mice. Notebook users, if they use external keyboards and mice at all, are more likely to use Bluetooth. Leaving USB-A on a desktop computer is not a hardship since there is plenty of space. The decision to use USB-A on a notebook is very different.

I don’t see Apple doing it, they wouldn’t step this far back in time. The ports they have now support all usb, it’s not like it’s eradicated. Short of a new invention type of port, or a port like the smart connector on the iPad or extra usbc/tb ports, I think this rumour is just clickbait.

I ticked everything except the ‘none’ option. I like to have more options. But if I had to pick a couple only, I would say USB A and MagSafe.

Usbc offers ALL the options. That’s the definition of options. There can’t be more unless there are more usbc ports. Getting rid of any to make way for single use ports would be less options. Putting single use ports in place of extra usbc ports would be less options.

I’m not asking for USB C ports to be removed. I want extra ports. I just think it’s nice not to have to use an adaptor for stuff like USB sticks or hard drives I have. Or should we all throw those perfectly useable cables/sticks away and replace them with USB C options?

You just need to buy an extra usbc cable for the existing usba hub you have already! MacBooks have been usbc only for years, it’s not a new concept. You’re making it sound like it’s a new concept. Adding them back in is a new concept however, and it’s not one Apple are likely to do.

I have to agree with you I really don't see them adding all those ports back in, at least as far as laptops are concerned. The only thing we know for sure is that a higher spec machine will have more usb-c ports.

I don't have a USB-A hub.

I upgraded from a 2011 MBA with USB A ports to an MBP. My Surface uses USB-A too. So yes, it's new for me. I still have perfectly useable USB-A products that I use a Satechi hub for. I'd just prefer not to have to use an adapter/hub for these (especially on the move). It's just a personal preference.

You can get a multipack of adapters for like $10; just leave those attached to your existing USB-A things.

Just give me a headphone port and 4-6 USB4 ports and I’m good. My monitor and dock both use USB-C connectors, I already have dongles, I just need to be able to plug in more stuff at once.

can't you use USB-C to HDMi cable? There is no need for HDMI to HDMI on MBP.

I think the ports will be 4 USB-C, MagSafe, 1 USB - A(maybe), 1 SD Card slot(maybe)
You are technically right. But your observation requires carrying a conversion cable. Once you go there, you can make the same argument for the USB-A and SD-Card too. Honestly, the idea is to negate the need to fill your pockets/briefcase with converters, cables, and adapters.

I think that USB-A should eventually be made obsolete. However, I think there is something to say about having a clear philosophical split if you will between high bandwidth thunderbolt and standard versatile usb: it’s what I like about magsafe returning: there’s something very wasteful to me about using a thunderbolt port with 4x pcie lanes capable of 40gbps throughput for simply carrying like 80 watts of power or something like a simple usb 2.0 mouse device. SD and HDMI come in clutch, and should be standard.

Magsafe could be reimagined- similar implementation similar to the Apple Watch.
No 'port', just a small area on both sides of the MB(P/A) that is magnetic (mag-safe) and it charges that way and you have the use of 4 full usb 4 ports.

For those of us who work in an office environments, HDMI monitors and projectors and meeting room TVs and the like will not disappear for many, many years. Hell I still run into VGA once in a while.
