Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16G DDR4-2400 CL16 works perfectly in this machine.

By the way, why do all reviewers suggest taking the iMac and putting it face down on a blanket in order to do this? I just turned the iMac over while it was standing and put the memory in without issues, I don't think it required nimble fingers in the least. :D

Yes, we know. Although, since you never specified. I'm assuming by this machine you meant the 2017 iMac.

I find it makes things a lot easier. Sometimes you need to apply a little pressure to get the DIMMs properly seated. Also, it allows you to use both hands, rather than having a hand on the front to keep it from swiveling on the hinge. YMMV

UPDATE: Nevermind my question - I found a thread about 40GB RAM in the iMac :)

I installed my RAM this evening (The 32 gig Crucial kit listed for iMac's) but it would not boot adding to slots 2 and 4. The factory RAM was in slots 1 and 3. I tried many combinations but it would only boot with factory RAM in slots 1 and 2, and the new RAM in slots 3 and 4. (see screen shot) It might have worked reversed with the new RAM in slots 1 and 2, and the factory in 3 and 4 but I did not test that. It would NOT boot having the matched memory in alternating slots as I believe it should. Has anyone else seen this with their 2017 iMac?

You have the matching DIMMs in separate channels and it will not operate in dual channel mode with that configuration. Matching RAM should be in alternating slots.

Did the new RAM work on its own with the stock RAM removed?

Well I tried again this AM changing the RAM to the order it should be and it booted right up. Tried many times yesterday having no luck. Go figure.

It's possible one of the sticks just wasn't seated properly...but who knows!

I installed 2 x 16GB HyperX Ram and it works fine till now.

Is this a language barrier? Are you saying you installed it and are having no problems UNTIL now?

Or is it still working fine as of this very moment?

No matter I am not spendin 3 grand to troubleshoot ram issues.

I ordered the non mac crucial and saved 40 bucks.

Sure hope apple does not leave you Hyperfolks "hanging" with a bios tweak!

Maybe I'm not a native English speaker?

I wanted to say that ram was working when I wrote that post. And it is still working, I ran into no issues. I didn't have to change anything in bios.

PS: 2x 16 GB HyperX was 240€, Crucial sticks are almost the same price. At least in Germany.

I added a 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) Micron Crucial kit to the factory 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) right after taking the iMac out of the box and before starting it up for the first time. No issues at all in 3 weeks. I decided for the regular non-Mac version (CT2K16G4SFD824A) mainly because it was available. Additionally, it was only € 209 on Amazon Germany.

I don't think there are performance differences between the Mac version and the non-Mac version. I guess the only difference is that the Mac version is lead free and halogen free which conforms to Apple's sustainability standards for its computers.
However, I think that even when getting the Mac version you will not get the same modules that Apple uses. My iMac came with two 4 GB Micron modules. Yet, they looked different (e.g., they were black) than the Mac version on Crucial's website (green).

Thank you for the feedback! Now I understand the Hyper is still good!
BUT- as ONIONBOBO proved (search him to make sure you add memory right)-
If you want to leverage the existing 8 megs of ram factory installed properly, it is best not to mix CL.
YMMV!

P.S. Thank you for Heidi Klum and Claudia Schiffer!

will the mid 2017 Imac support 24GB ram ?
will the 2400mhz ram sticks that come with the iMac from apple, work with a 2133mhz 16gm from Skill ?

Your welcome.

I didn't mix with stock ram. I tried mixing stock and HyperX ram, but the imac didn't boot, so there ain't no other option than using only the same sticks.

For LUXTRAU

I only hope this bump is a fraction as good as the ones Claudia and Heidi have provided ;^)

Kingston HyperX DDR4 2400 16x2 kit. Part number: hx424s14ibk2/32

I should note the computer shows 2133MHz when looking at the memory in the "about system" under the apple menu. Not sure if it does that with the factory RAM as well. The chips clearly state 2133-2666MHz so I'm not concerned.
I've got the exact same issue. And I've figured out why and how to fix it.

1) To fix it, remove the stock ram, put your HyperX in slot 1 and 3 only, run as 32 gb. You will get 2400 MHz.

2) I've done a number of test and found running with HyperX 32gb only has the highest performance, infact, my iMAC has the highest score for 2017 model on Geekbench, better than stock 64gb.

https://browser.primatelabs.com/v4/cpu/search?dir=desc&q=iMac18,3&sort=score

3) The reason is HyperX has faster CL, only 14, where stock Apple ram has 17, therefor when you mix different CL speed, HyperX will slow down to 2133 MHz. Actually, it raised factory RAM's CL to 14, however, factory ram will slow to 2133 when CL@14 and force hyperx to 2133 as well. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

4) If you want to run 4 rams, then ditch the Apple ram and get another set of 32gb Hyperx, you'll have 64GB and it will run at 2400 MHz.

5) I've done many test and 32GB HyperX alone is almost 10% faster than 40GB of mix factory RAM and Hyper X.

6) On my machine, if I leave factory ram in slot 1,3 and HyperX in 2,4, the iMac would not boot up, fan is working but black screen, waited 2 minutes. It does work if I put Hyperx in 1,3 and factory in 2,4. But will only run at 2133 MHz and much worse Geekbench scores.

Conclusion: Only run the same RAM across all slots. Remove your stock ram and run it with 32GB only. Or buy 2 more HyperX if you want 64gb. And HyperX is damn amazing. I think only people with 64GB HyperX can beat my Geekbench score.

+1 For Crucial Ballistix Spor LT, just installed successfully 32GB to my 2017 iMac and ran memtest86 for over 4 hours with no error.

You should be... they're overclocked. The first thing to remember about buying Kingston RAM is... don't.

I received my 2nd order of 32GB Corsair RAM yesterday from Amazon. Again, simple installation, no trouble. Now my iMac has 64GB RAM and flies with multiple virtual machines running. The Corsair RAM is high performance and good quality. It can work with Apple original RAM well.

I just joined the iMac family. 27" based model with 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM. Question for everyone. What is the maker of your stock Apple RAM? Pic would be great. I plan on buying another set of 8GB stock RAM to make 16GB. My iMac is shipping today. Yay!!!

Wanna buy mine? :) I took the 8GB of stock RAM out of mine since I bought HyperX (which doesn't play nicely with the stock RAM).
