It looks highly likely that I'm taking the day off work. I'll probably get outfitted with a reasonably hefty giftcard considering my mother forgot me at Christmas last year. Don't fret, she's been saving her pennies. My birthday is at the end of the month too. --I'd heard Apple will let people start getting in line around 12 or so, but I realize all bets are off. It'd be a very fun priveledge to be the first person to buy an iPhone in my area by lining up when the mall opens, but I don't want it THAT bad. ;-)

I might get it at the AT&T store one town over though. I talked to the guy on the phone and he sounded very helpful (well informed and detailed about how quick it would be to have me switch over and be up and running). But, Apple DID note that they'd let people just walk out with them, which makes me think they'll have some really easy web signup thing going on. You could probably even sign-up for phone service using the phone, over Apple's Wi-Fi. Wouldn't that be a hoot? --Anyway... I'll just keep thinking about it until next week.

To me, Apple distinguishing a line-starting time is an error. That seems to intentionally tell people that you are going to have to stand in a line regardless, so you might-as-well get there early.

Be that as it may, I would have assumed that a line would have naturally started at Noon or so. I just don't see camping out as being reasonable.

I'm still very undecided as to where I should go to pick up my iPhone. I'd prefer the Apple store experience - but AT&T seems to be the safer bet.

cingular store, hopefully my tattoo will be done befor 5, apple stores are gonna be packed and im not to fond of mobs.

I'm planning on waiting at least a couple weeks to see initial user feedback. It won't be sold out... it's Apple. They sell direct.

haha, when i first read this i thought you mean you'd wait a couple weeks in line! :)

Part if the fun of big launches is waiting in line. I did it for the PS3 and the Wii. I missed the PS3 by about 20 or so people but it was at one of the big Circuit City releases so they had all sorts of people out and it was exciting. The Wii wait was kinda dull as I just walked up to the store at 6am and some guy walked out and game me a ticket. I went back home after that and came back at 9 when they opened. No rush or anything but the people who didn't try to wait in line and left empty handed were sure pissed.

iPhone may or may not be a big launch. I just wanna have the experience. I'm still debating whether I'm gonna hit up my local AT&T store or the Pentagon City Apple Store. If there is no special benifit to either I'll try the apple store. If they announce that it will be an easier process to get one at AT&T though...well then I'll just do that. I'd rather do the Apple Store though as they will prolly have more interesting stuff going on.

I live in orlando and i am getting in line at 3pm. we have so many different att&t stores here i just could not see getting in line earlier than that. can wait for iPhone!!!!:D

So, you're going to an AT&T store and not one of the two Apple stores? What led to that decision? I'll be in Orlando and am trying to pick the best plan of action, too. :)

Orlando

I am in Orlando as well. I have several friends who plan on hitting the Apple and At&t Stores at Mall at Millenia around Noon. Lately, I have been thinking of when the mall opens. However, the Apple Store manager states they are receiving at least one-thousand. Still, I'd rather get mine ASAP.

The terrifying if :

If just 10% of ipod owners, 20% of smartphone owners, 5% of mac users, and just 1% of ordinary phone users decide they are having one you've got at least a 50 million unit waiting list right there and that's going to take at least 6 months to fulfill if Apple put everything they've got behind it!!

Although maybe because of what Steve said, there may be longer lines at AT&T stores and the Apple lines may be more realistic. After all, if you read this forum, it seems like everyone is going to be going to AT&T stores instead of Apple stores.

I dunno....doesn't seems realistic to me.
There are many more AT&T stores than there are Apple stores.
That spreads out line-age a bit more.

Example: There' 15+ Corporate stores out here in Vegas, compared to 1 Apple Store right in the middle of the town. I really think the lines will be unrealistically HUGE at the Apple Store. However, let's hope the 150 or even around that number is true.

You're forgetting that you're percentages here will overlap catagories. I think it is safe to say that the 10% iPod owners, 20% smartphone owners and 5% mac users are all included (and then some) in the 1% ordinary phone users.

If you just want to see one, don't go to an Apple or AT&T store at 6. Go to the nearest Starbucks at 7. Where else would the buyers go next?

I know this thread is like 10 days old now, but can we get a poll going with some time frames?
Something like:
  • On the 28th or before
  • 12am-9am
  • 9am-1pm
  • 1pm-430pm
  • 430pm-600pm
  • Not waiting in line

I'm walking into a store around 9PM and picking one up. There will be no lines by then.

I bet all those who camped out / waited in line for hours are going to feel pretty silly.

I agree that I do feel a little silly that I am planning on waiting all day at my store of choice. The way I rationalize is that I weigh the feeling of feeling silly against the feeling of missing out on the iPhone. I probably wouldn't camp out for this but I am leaving on vacation the following week on vacation so I want one to take with me.
