I live in the Phoenix area, and since it will be about 110 degrees outside on June 29, I'm not expecting much of a line to form. But if there is, I'll be there whenever it starts.

I live in orlando and i am getting in line at 3pm. we have so many different att&t stores here i just could not see getting in line earlier than that. can wait for iPhone!!!!:D

Maybe I'm already in line...

but I'm not, i was thinking 3pm Apple Store Downtown Chicago

i dont think it will be like the wii or PS3. i just cant see peopel caming out overnight for a phone! a $600 at that!

It is, in fact *EXACTLY* like the Wii and PS3...and ATT and Apple's little "Jennifer Corporation" "6PM" stunt sealed that deal...even more friggin' free advertisement...and durning peak sunlight hours so the news crews can get really good footage :)

I live in San Diego where we have 3 Apple Stores and quite a few corporate at&t outlets as well. I'm still up in the air as to which one (Apple or corp. at&t) will offer me the best chance of actually getting a phone on the 29th. My daughter and I are planning on making a day of it with an Easy-Up, cooler and possibly even a barbecue. I know that may sound silly to many of you but I'm 47 years old and I've never camped out for *anything* and I figure it would be fun. We are 'gonna check out our location (whichever one we pick) the evening of the 28th. If there are already people there, we'll break out the sleeping bags. If not, we'll hit it at around 8am.

I probably won't be able to get in line until afternoon, since I can't take the whole day off of work. I'll be hitting up an AT&T store for sure, since the Apple stores will be crazy.

*sigh*

So we think....no one knows for sure
*sigh*

You know...I think some people *want* the thing to be a grand just for "SEE? I TOLD YOU they should have went with <my provider of choice that isn't ATT>!!"

Look kids. Its simple. ATT stated, repeatedly, "there will be no subsidies on the iPhone at launch."

Further clarification came from the fact that for (obvious) legal reasons, the "requires 2 year contract" language was removed from all advertising within 24 hours...because it doesn't require a 2 year commitment.

Notice that the *pricing* hasn't changed...just the commitment requirement.

Now, is it *possible* that they will pull a "gotcha!" and say well "no, you don't need a 2 year...but you need a grand instead?"

Oh yeah. It is certainly possible.

Is it likely?

No. The profit, on both ATT and Apple's ends is already built into the sale itself...because there is NO SUBSIDY on the phone. "Subsidy" in cell phone parlance means "we offer the buyer off the MSRP if they commit to an extended contract for the service."

ATT has stated, since january, that there is no subsidy on the phone. It has been widely reported. A lot.

Now, if they say well, without a two year contract the product cost X, and X is more than $499 or $599 then hello, this means the phone *is* subsidized...which opens ups a whole can of worms that they don't want opened...

I mean, if you are in the business...then you know these things...its how it works, and the kids at ATT are trying something new that, if it works, you can bet you'll be 1. seeing more of and 2. seeing btter phones...because it will set the precedent that people are willing to pay retail (now) in America for them...and that is what this is *really* about for ATT. They want to change the market landscape for equipment AND service.

RnSK.......

You seem to know quite a bit about this stuff so maybe you can answer my question. I currently have 4 phone with at&t. Do you think I will be able to transfer 2 of my numbers to new iPhones or will I have to open 2 additional accounts and have 6 phones on my account?

I've never camped out for *anything* and I figure it would be fun.

It will be! I recently camped out for a Wii, and it was a BLAST. Sat there in the freezing cold, and I didn't bring a good jacket....still it was the time of my life. Really wish I had brought a camera...also wish I was able to camp out for an iPhone, but I'm away when it launches

*sigh*

You know...I think some people *want* the thing to be a grand just for "SEE? I TOLD YOU they should have went with <my provider of choice that isn't ATT>!!"

And thats why I said " We think so...no one knows for sure"...you can tell all the people you want that you won't need a new 2 year contract, but the fact remains....no one knows for sure. You can't tell me 100% thats the way it will happen. Apple/At&T have not told anyone what is going to happen.

I hope it does, but we can never be sure. You quoted me, explain what you "know" is going to happen, but then agreed with me.

**Highlight was done by me, so it clear you agreed with me

If things happen they way RnSK saying, which seems likely...you'll be able to put 2 of the phone numbers with iPhones.(at the price of 1200+taz) And end up with 4 lines.

If things happen that way.....I hope they do, but again we don't have any offical word from At&t or Apple. Until then I won't be sure.

Anyone camping out?

Anyone planning to camp out?

I am thinking about going to an apple store to get one. Part of the fun is waiting in line with other iPhone enthusiasts, right?

But I am sure some Cingular stores are going to get crazy.

When the Sidekick 3 was released, pretty much every tmo corp store was PACKED.

I'm planning on camping out. I know a few people who work at the stores and tomorrow and the day after I'll be investigating their plans and then deciding which one will be the best campout location.

I'll be heading over sometime afternoon of the 28th. I intend to be in the first 3 people in line :p

Of course, while I didn't do this for a PS3 or anything, I did camp out for the WWDC07 Stevenote. that was a great experience, and let's just say I wouldn't mind doing it a few more times :D

I can't believe anyone is going to camp out for a phone.

I mean, I really want this phone, I've had the money set aside since the thing was announced, but it's just not feasible for me to get the AT&T store any time before 5pm on Friday. And if that's not early enough, then I'll be disappointed, but that's just the way it is. I'll just get it later.

They say the iPhone could have crazy lines like the game console launches did. I kind of doubt that though. (At least I hope it doesn't.)

I decided not to camp out for my Wii. I thought I'd be able to walk right in and get one, LOL. I ended up getting one a little over a week later after nine hours in line wearing a t-shirt and shorts. (Hey, it was on a whim.) I got an outrageous doctor bill from a combination of the bitter cold and the sick person standing next to me in the line, but it was worth it. I had my Wii! In the future, I probably will camp out, but go fully prepared with warm clothing and a StunMaster to keep the sickies far, far away.

I have camped out for the Xbox 360 and the Wii, so if it is necessary, I will stay for long periods of time. I will be calling and checking on my apple store all throughout the day. There are also two cingular locations closeby, so that's good backup too.

You just buy the phones. You are already an ATT customer.

And thats why I said " We think so...no one knows for sure"...you can tell all the people you want that you won't need a new 2 year contract, but the fact remains....no one knows for sure. You can't tell me 100% thats the way it

No no...you think so. I was being facetious :)

The No Contract prices on those two SKUs are $499 and $599; there are no incentives for new customers or current customers upgrading...or anyone else.

People planning on camping an Apple store is one thing but those planning on doing that for the AT&T stores had better call up their local stores to make sure they don't have a waiting list running. The Apple stores, by Steve's decree, won't have a waiting list set up but it seems every AT&T store I contacted near me has an unofficial waiting list set up, I am #28 at one btw. I can see how some stores want to avoid the whole zoo of having people camped out days in advance but it would suck for someone to camp a store where all the iPhones are already spoken for.

My local store (granted, we're very close to apple headquarters) received SPECIFIC instructions NOT to create a waiting list, with stores near by being told to abolish them. It's Apple's instructions that no such thing exists, so hopefully closer to launch, they'll be thrown out. As it stands, my local store says that they will never create a waiting list. So if you're on a list... don't get your hopes up too much.

I just wonder where Business Week got their "3 million iPhones" information? Apple would have had to really gamble and start producing the little beauty's way before the FCC granted them approval.

I would love to think there is 3 million waiting....less stress on launch week...plus I won't have to worry about camping out.

My guess? Probably just a stock booster viral comment.

Arc;)

I live in a fairly small town in Connecticut. I'll be heading home from school that morning, so I'll probably stop by the Cingular store on the way and see what the situation is. If there's some sort of a line, I may stick around, but if not, I'll probably wait until 4pm to hang around.
