Eh? It's in a mall, I live here. Where did you get that idea?
Ya, it's definitely in a mall. I would know, I went to the store opening.

Or for all the AT&T customers that are not even a year into their contract and aren't eligible to upgrade yet?
It doesn't matter...the phone is $499 or $599. There are no subsidies.
i dont think it will be like the wii or PS3. i just cant see peopel caming out overnight for a phone! a $600 at that!
*sigh*So we think....no one knows for sure
I've never camped out for *anything* and I figure it would be fun.
*sigh*
You know...I think some people *want* the thing to be a grand just for "SEE? I TOLD YOU they should have went with <my provider of choice that isn't ATT>!!"
Look kids. Its simple. ATT stated, repeatedly, "there will be no subsidies on the iPhone at launch."
Further clarification came from the fact that for (obvious) legal reasons, the "requires 2 year contract" language was removed from all advertising within 24 hours...because it doesn't require a 2 year commitment.
Notice that the *pricing* hasn't changed...just the commitment requirement.
Now, is it *possible* that they will pull a "gotcha!" and say well "no, you don't need a 2 year...but you need a grand instead?"
Oh yeah. It is certainly possible.
Is it likely?
No. The profit, on both ATT and Apple's ends is already built into the sale itself...because there is NO SUBSIDY on the phone. "Subsidy" in cell phone parlance means "we offer the buyer off the MSRP if they commit to an extended contract for the service."
ATT has stated, since january, that there is no subsidy on the phone. It has been widely reported. A lot.
Now, if they say well, without a two year contract the product cost X, and X is more than $499 or $599 then hello, this means the phone *is* subsidized...which opens ups a whole can of worms that they don't want opened...
I mean, if you are in the business...then you know these things...its how it works, and the kids at ATT are trying something new that, if it works, you can bet you'll be 1. seeing more of and 2. seeing btter phones...because it will set the precedent that people are willing to pay retail (now) in America for them...and that is what this is *really* about for ATT. They want to change the market landscape for equipment AND service.
RnSK.......
You seem to know quite a bit about this stuff so maybe you can answer my question. I currently have 4 phone with at&t. Do you think I will be able to transfer 2 of my numbers to new iPhones or will I have to open 2 additional accounts and have 6 phones on my account?

And thats why I said " We think so...no one knows for sure"...you can tell all the people you want that you won't need a new 2 year contract, but the fact remains....no one knows for sure. You can't tell me 100% thats the way it

The Apple stores, by Steve's decree, won't have a waiting list set up but it seems every AT&T store I contacted near me has an unofficial waiting list set up, I am #28 at one btw. I can see how some stores want to avoid the whole zoo of having people camped out days in advance but it would suck for someone to camp a store where all the iPhones are already spoken for.
