Over-power and over-spec the iPad, while telling us with straight faces that 8gb (with shared video memory) is plenty for a 2024 Mac.

Tim, what is the narrative today? Or doesn't it matter as long as the profits are good?
The biggest problem is that for plenty of people 8GB is enough. Especially if their restart or turn off their Macs periodically.

Is there anyone who would even need the M4 chip today or anytime in the near future?

The software development for iPadOS has stagnated to the point that 99,99 % of the people would be just as happy with a M1 Pro. Heck, even the old models with the A chip would be good enough for most people.

I use my iPad Pro nearly every day but I honestly don't know if I would buy a new one until Apple make it possible to run other os on it. I'm not holding my breath...

iPad Pro should focus less on 5mm thickness, and more on adding more ports such as SD Card and MagSafe 3 from Mac laptops, to make the device more "pro".

It massively needs more IO. Massively. Getting data to work through the keyboard's USB-C port would be a start. Trying to use iPad Pro as any kind of useful computer replacement leaves your setup looking like a giant dongle island with a small iPad attached. Lack of even just a simple headphone jack is a total clown show. What's a computer indeed. If only they knew the answer 🤡

I am hoping Apple leaves the front camera in portrait orientation on the iPad Pro. iPad Pro is for Apple Pencil users not boring zombie keyboard users; give them iPad Air.

That notch in the iPad Pro mock up is UGLY as F! Why ruin the first OLED iPad like that??? As an artist who uses their iPad Pro professionally, I don’t want this. Leave the notches an dynamic islands for iPhones!
they've already put a notch on macbooks and they don't even have face id. of course they'll put one on the ipad pro. i like to use ipad (when i had one) in portrait a lot of the time so it seems weird to have a notch on the side but i guess most people use it in landscape.

that said, i don't hate notches or dynamic island. doesn't bother me on iphone or macbook so i don't see why it would really bother me on an ipad if i ever bought one again.

Oh boy, I can hardly contain my excitement as Apple prepares to unveil its latest line of overpriced gadgets that no one really needs. But hey, at least we'll get to see Tim Cook's signature awkward smile once again, right? And maybe, just maybe, he'll finally figure out how to make a product that people actually want to buy instead of just throwing more money at shiny things. Bring on the hype!
Imagine letting Tim Cook live rent-free in your head.

Boring. Booooooorrrring. Boring.

The iPad is a toy. Sure, it has a few niche applications like filling out forms in doctors' offices, but for the most part its only value is playing solitaire and reading the news while taking a dump. For it to have any real value, Apple would need to allow macOS on it. It's not like it's not powerful enough now, but Apple's idiotic control fetish makes it mostly worthless.

Why try? Just get a computer.

I really want an iPad mini 256 with cellular... and frankly the mini 6 is "Fine," I just hate to put the money out on an iPad model that was introduced almost 3 years ago. Even if the only difference was A17 processor ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'd buy it.

To each their own but for me the iPad is more exciting than Macs. Only apple product that allows pen, touch and keyboard input which makes it very versatile.

also MacOS is overrated. What you need is features from MacOS to come to iPad, but not MacOs itself

I guess Apple never wanted to tip toe into windows 8 OS scenario. They purposely want people to recognize the touch gesture interface is preferable for handheld tablets and the laptops/desktops use the mouse/touchpad/keyboard interface which is always present on devices you setup on some surface. ;)

Has anyone seen any credible rumors of the huge price increase? All I've ever seen is speculation-for-clicks. If there's actually something from a credible source, I'd like to see it.

Otherwise, why does anyone treat the foolish speculation-for-clicks as if it deserved consideration? This just seems weird.

Here, I will start my own rumor...

"Oh my gawwwd! The new 12.9 iPad Pro might be as much as $1,200 higher for each size. We predict that 90 day iPad sales will plummet to 20% of previous releases because of this massive price increase. We suspect this is an indication of turmoil in the top ranks of the Apple leadership team. Will the board allow Tim Cook to remain in charge with this failure?"

My rumor is 100% as substantiative as all the other large price increase rumors I have seen, and in fact, has a very similar format and similar content to those. Y'all gonna act like my rumor is worthy of consideration too? Or do these foolish rumors have to be a stand alone article on an obscure website to be taken seriously.

I wouldn't be surprised if a 2 TB iPad Pro 12.9 (or 13) with keyboard will be $250 more than the last model. Maybe up to $400 more, but that's max. $150 to $400 for the combo. The $700 to $1,200 increase speculation is ridiculous and it hurts credibility to do anything except ignore or scoff.

Apple revenue is down... iPad revenue is down... multi-tasking on iPadOS is forever lacking... iPads gather dust on shelves... To me, that says Apple would be nuts to raise prices. But we'll see.

I could see a price increase if the new iPads are the most advanced, most amazing iPads Apple has ever introduced, but those aren't words that Tim Cook throws around lightly.
I see what you did there 🙂

Don't see anything that applies to my use cases. Hope WWDC is better.
This article was interesting and presented some explanation on why the event in 3 days rather then WWDC

Apple has been criticized by commentators over the past few weeks for three things. First, iPads have not been selling well. Second: While the Vision Pro introduced a new product category that may grow over time, its initial launch didn't sell that well. Lastly, Apple is perceived by many as way, way behind on generative AI tech, which is already transforming other companies. There have also been rumors that Microsoft might announce a new silicon that will be fiercely competitive with Apple Silicon for AI tasks, and Microsoft's chips could be announced at a planned event between May 7 and the start of WWDC.
Given all that, our best guess is that Apple wants to focus its messaging—and the time window for that messaging—on the right targets without muddying the message by trying to address everything at once.
Talking about the iPad's challenges while also preempting Microsoft with a new chip announcement could be Apple's focus for this event. Getting those things out of the way now would allow WWDC and its new operating system announcements to focus heavily on AI, which is the bigger question the company is looking to answer.
In a way this May 7th event is a stagger step to marketing WWDC news, Apple able to show some things, generate interest, and then allow WWDC to present a lot more details to heighten interest.

I was able to switch over from an M1 MacBook Pro to the iPad Pro with M1 for all my photo editing workflows. The on-image editing capability (i.e. for skin retouch) is the differentiator for me. Affinity photo for iPad has feature parity with MacOS for my use case. I might be an outlier but I look forward to seeing what apple has up its sleeve in this next model.
