It literally says "Select the system you want to use to start up your computer" and then it will confirm your selection.

I don't think it's complicated at all...I think you're making it way more complicated than it actually is....

The way the interface is done, it's as if I needed to click the "Restart..." button to complete the changes. What's the difference between "Restart..." and "Target Disk Mode..." ? The Horizontal Rule makes me think that the "Target Disk Mode..." option is not linked to the HD selection. Will it restart my Mac on the disk I selected and then undo my selection, as opposed to the first button doing the change permanently ? This pane is flawed in so many ways...

Even if I were wrong about it, the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" magic sentence still wouldn't work with me. Would you rather sit on a 10-years-old preferences pane or start afresh ?

Feedback

Reading through all the comments. And some very valid points.

If you want to add a bit of weight to get the message through, make sure to Feedback to Apple. For those on the beta program there is obviously a channel to do so. For the rest of us we can use the more circuitous route using the following link.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

But a leader in about not having time to beat test ( or wasn't one of the million or waiting for a million to upgrade from Mac Pro 1.1 to Mac Pro 2013) and get your spoke in.

Enough feedback might effect changes. If your not in you can't win. Focus on specific feature and explain why that trend does't work, in your humble opinion. Don't say it sucks.

The only major things that I saw in the preview that I didn't like were all things that everyone's already touched on, namely:

- inconsistent alignment and drawing of titlebar objects. The stoplights should ALWAYS be right up in the top left corner, not middle-aligned; and the forward/backward buttons need to be rejoined.
- Safari URL bar only shows the top domain address of the currently viewed site. That is going to be a pain in the arse, and I hope you can see the full address by hovering the cursor over it, or something.
- Helvetica Neue as a system font. I'll have to play with it in person to see if I like it, but as a rule I don't like Helvetica nor Helvetica Neue - Avenir Next is my go-to sans-serif.
- folder icons. While I understand that the hue they went with matches the stoplights' newer colours, it is totally inappropriate for icon use.

And what's with the hatred of the new Finder icon? I think it's cute!

UI changes that need to be made till GM

In my opinion, as they went with a full redesign they should be consistent everywhere and get rid of everything that still looks like mavericks.

1. Redesign all app icons for consistency.

2. Redesign hard disk icons, beachball! and the poof remove from dock animation

3. Redesign Dashboard or get rid of it completely.

4. the wifi icon on the menu bar looks way too thin and weird on non retina screens.

5. the folder icons should be repainted with a darker shade of blue, too bright.

6. Make the tool bars translucent on full screen mode.

7. Change the hideous grey background in finder's coverflow or get rid of it. Who uses coverflow anyways? lol

8. Redesign all the icons in system preferences, only some have changed, others still the same as mavericks.

9. Change the icon for mission control completely. That black is awful. what were they thinking?

10. Redesign the lock icon in system preferences panels.

11. Redesign the volume overlay.

12. Make the exit full screen icon blue, it is grey/black now.

13. Use Yosemite screenshots in the mouse/trackpad video examples

I would also change the mail app icon with the eagle but that is just me. I'd prefer a simple letter envelope like in iOS for that one.

I mean that they should all share the same design language/colors/shading as the new icons do. See how the iTunes old icon looks next to the new ones? That is inconsistency.

I hope they will do most of them, cause Yosemite looks pretty good, it would be a pity if they are lazy and don't change everything.

They should do what they did to iOS with iOS 7. Get rid of everything that looks like mavericks.

I think it would also look great if they used the look/colors from iCloud.com for mail and notes.

It does but the translucency makes it better now. In tiger it was just transparent.

I'm having a difficult time looking at the dock and not feeling like it's 2005 again. It REALLY reminds me of Tiger.

Totally agree. I prefer the Mavericks dock by a mile, it's much more sophisticated looking. This is really the main thing that isn't sitting right with me about Yosemite, it seems like a step backwards. I guess they were trying to make it more like the iOS 7 dock.

When the public beta program starts i will submit it as feedback. I REALLY don't like it. They could have made the icons flat without bringing the dock back to the Tiger look.

I think the new white buttons that you see in Finder (Back, Forward, etc...) look odd and unfinished. Why not make them like on iOS 7, as in just the symbols without the rectangle "button" shape around them? Or at least make them look less like white rectangles and give them some translucency too, right now they look like placeholders or some graphics glitch!

Menu Bar

The menu bar with the same transparency and blur effect as the dock. It would look more consistent.

Couldn't agree more! I wold like at least the option to just have the icons instead of the frame around the button.

Agree with all of these. It's difficult to tell if you're actually connected to Wifi, the icon is so thin. System Preferences is still this mish mash of old and new icons.

The Yosemite screens in the trackpad video will probably come towards the GM.

So basically, . . . go back to the drawing board and try again.

I would like to see iOS 7- like share sheets for OS X Yosemite, I think the ugly share menu that we have now pretty much reminds me of older releases and I thought the whole transition to an iOS 7-like interface was to change the designs of all the menus around.

Why change something just for the sake of it? The current design is an efficient way to display a number of options that are easy to select using a pointing device more precise than a finger on a touch screen.

Not every tradition should be thrown away without a further thought just because iOS implements something differently. Apple know this too.

Something needs to happen with Safari. While I used 10.10 for some time over the weekend, whenever I had a Safari window open I was never quite sure if it was the active window or not. Something with the font thickness/color made it tough to tell.

Would also like to see a redesign of Spotlight.

AFAIK, one can make a bug reporter account with any AppleID and submit bug reports directly, without being a developer: http://bugreporter.apple.com

-clicking on a url in safari to edit it causes it to fly to the left. This means that if you had already positioned the mouse where you wanted to edit it, it's now far off to the right. It should either stay centered, or stay left aligned--either one is okay.

-the menu bar icons are just a tad too thin now. I bet they look great on retina laptops, but not on normal DPI screens.

-the shadows around windows look ridiculously huge, which has been an issue for several versions already.

edit: -the calculator app look is out of date, especially compared to the icon

from the looks of apple’s website, keynote and video, shadows are going to be toned down. a lot of things in dp1 are completely untouched from mavericks.

The full URL needs to come back in Safari.

It's just an awful, awful idea. Biggest step back in average user security for a decade.
