I had to do some internet sleuthing because I go back to late 1994-1995 I think. This is as close as I can get.

I notice that some of you US based guys identify your phones with the carrier. Why?

  • Siemens A55
  • Nokia 3410
  • Sagem something (cheapest phone in the UK with colour screen)
  • Samsung SGH-E380 (flip phone, bluetooth and 80mb storage) 😎
  • Samsung SGH-E256 (Slide phone, D500, D600 and D900 were dream phones but too expensive when I was 12/13)
  • Sony Ericsson K800i (legit the best non-smart phone that there ever was)

Then I turned 18 and was too cool for an iPhone but got my first contract:

  • HTC Sensation (Worst 2 years of my phone owning life)

Then I saw the light and haven't looked back...

  • iPhone 5S
  • iPhone 6S Plus
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max

First cell phone - Nokia (can't remember brand or name)
Motorola Razr
Some random cheap flip phone
T-mobile MyTouch 4g (first Android phone)
Galaxy Nexus
Nexus 5
Nexus 6P
OG Pixel XL
Pixel 3XL
iPhone 13 Pro Max

So I've only recently joined the iPhone party. I'm liking the iPhone. But I'm also kind of sad that the competition (mainly Google) have failed to provide a hardware experience that can rival the iPhone. I miss a lot about Android OS, but Apple has a better chance of closing the software gap (I've seen significant improvements even in the small amount of time I've been on iPhone) vs Google/Android closing the hardware and ecosystem gap. I've been waiting YEARS for a Pixel that excelled at the basics - solid battery, solid camera, solid screen, solid radios, and consistent performance for at least 3 years. They always mess up at least one. Google would sell a literal potato to users if it would showcase their latest flashy ML trick. All they care about is their software and ML experiments vs providing the BEST product they can to end users. It hurts to type this as a long-time android fan, but you can see it in the keynotes year after year. They are like ML/AI conference talks vs actual product releases. I'm over it.

Lord, I can’t even remember the make/model of my first cell phone! It was in 1997, I was in my last semester of college, and I was the first of my cohort to have one. We were so green that none of us knew that you had to keep the phone on to get calls! So embarrassing, but we were used to pagers.

Anyway, I know that after that, I had at least one more candy bar, then within a few years, I got a Motorola StarTAC, then a Razr.

Then I moved to smartphones. I had been carrying a Palm Pilot and a cell phone, so as soon as they released a smartphone, I jumped on it.

I had two Palm Treos before the iPhone was released. I skipped the OG iPhone, because it wasn’t 3G, which I’d been on for years. Then it was

iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
iPhone 5
iPhone 5S
iPhone 6
(Only skipped year)
iPhone 7
iPhone X
iPhone XS
iPhone 11 Pro
iPhone 12 Pro
iPhone 13 Pro
iPhone 14 Pro

It’s been fun!

Yep, Google is very foolish. I would buy a Pixel for the first time for the camera and give it a try. However, I do not live in one of the 5 or 6 countries where Google sells it. Even if it is potatos they want to sell, they have to actually offer them to potential customers. I really enjoyed my first Android, the Galaxy S10e which I have had for almost three years.

So I’m a crusty old git, my first phone was a Motorola MR20, which was a bizarre device in that you could only receive text messages not send them. Then about 25 years ago I was in the local phone shop upgrading my phone to another Motorola (The MR601 that I could send texts from too, though I wanted it for the vibrate feature which was new to me) when I spotted my first ever smartphone, the Nokia Communicator 9000. Back then my network had 50 minutes of off peak calls for 50p a day. Well I was in a job where my work was finishing at 10pm and I was waiting around for half an hour to get my hour long train journey home. I hated the job but because my work was 12 hour shifts I had no way of looking for work. So I bought one and every day I sent emails or faxes on my way home to companies who were recruiting.

It yielded me a job nearer home and normal office hours. Since then I’ve had quite a few smart phones/devices

Sony Ericsson p990
Sony Ericsson P1i
BlackBerry 8800
Blackberry Curve
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10
Sony Xperia X8
Sony Xperia T
Sony Xperia Z2
Sony Xperia 1 MK 2

I then got an iPhone XR issued by my job and I bought an iPad Mini 5 instead of replacing my kindle. I’ve ended up immersed in Apple stuff including replacing my home computers with M1 pro 14 and 16 inch 1TB. I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max 1tb and a 13 Mini 256gb and a series 7 watch. I also have two iPad Pro (2020) one is 12.9 1tb and the other is an 11 256gb and various Apple accessories. So you could say from one apple came a veritable orchard!

I remember that gap between when the iPhone came out and when Verizon finally got it. It was several years. I believe my last smartphone before the switch was a blackberry, and only had enough memory to have like 5 apps downloaded at a time. It wasn't old either. It was a modern offering from them at the time. That first iPhone was a really big change. It was never difficult for me to see why blackberry died.

I did have a Galaxy S7 very briefly. Just wanted to try something different. Did, didn't care for it. I think it ended up in a pool after less than a year, and I went right back to an iPhone rather than replace it.

Samsung has certainly improved since the S7 days and to be fair to any new system that one shifts to, you must give it a trial period of a month or two or three to adapt.

Do think you would have tried Apple of a different Android device if work hadn’t given you the XR?

I’m pretty sure in the long run I would have ended up on an iPad at least as I want to do some video editing work and I can’t see a tablet even now that I feel is suited to the task on Android. What sold me was the continuity as I am forever leaving my phone in one room of the house and then it rings and I either don’t hear it or end up dashing for it. Of course now we have all sorts of other continuities which are a bonus for me anyway.

My list is pretty small as I didn't get my first mobile/cell phone till 2007.

Mine is quite simple: Ericsson GH688 -> Siemens S35 -> Nokia 6310i -> Nokia 5110 -> Palm Treo 680 -> Treo Pro -> iPhone 3GS & Blackberry Onyx -> iPhone 4s -> 6s -> SE2 -> 11.
I explored a lot on Palm (TX, Treo), too bad they didn’t stay any longer now. I love how I can write fast & accurate using graffiti, schedule SMS, change air conditioner or TV program while waiting using my phone, record the call very clearly, and schedule backup the phone every other day to the card. I also maintained lot of daily journals, purchased ebooks (even though the screen is small) and spent hours playing Bejeweled. I gave up when they stop releasing PalmOS and move to Windows mobile in Treo Pro, until I was introduced to iPhone 3GS (which I didn’t really like it at first).

I had a HTC thunderbolt and hated it. At that point the only Apple product I had ever owned was an iPod nano first gen and I loved it. I went to the mall one day in a new area. I was a travel nurse at the time and walked by a Verizon store. They had the new iPhone 4s that had just come out. I switched and never looked back. Now I own all kind of apple products. I remember how cool the 4s was. I sold it on eBay four years years later for $100 when I bought it for $200. The Motorola razor and blackberry 8330 were probably the two best non apple phones I had
