As far as I can tell, my 2018 iPad Pro works about exactly as well as the day I bought it. And they have added functionality (trackpad support). Maybe I don't push my iPads enough, but its hard for me to see exactly how they can improve upon the iPad besides a screen and spec bump.
At this point there’s no logical hardware changes they could do unless they also made the OS more desktop-like by adding windowed app support and things like that. The 2018 iPad (standard) could edit 2 4k streams in real time. Thats enough power to do literally anything our apps can do, and that’s the cheapest iPad.

If they do some major software update I think it would get people to buy but then it would eat into their Mac sales and I’m sure they don’t want that. For the prices though... I woudln’t be surprised if they did offer MacOS-like features but sequestered it only to the Pro line as those are the same prices as the M1 Macbook air.

Honestly that’ll probably happen and they’ll restrict the 2020 Airs even though they could still run it.

I know it's not happening, but... a 15 inch screen. With a compatible Magic Keyboard. I know the price would be astronomically high for the combo, but I would buy it in a heartbeat. My workflow is such that I have found I can get everything done on my iPad Pro 11 inch with Smart Keyboard Folio and Apple Pencil, the same as on my 13 inch MacBook Pro. But after using both I've found that I want a bigger screen (at least 15 inches), with the portability and hybrid capabilities of an iPad--I love being able to snap in the iPad to the keyboard to get work done and also being able to quickly snap it off the keyboard and use the iPad by itself for entertainment/leisure/media consumption.
What work do you do that you need a 15" screen on an iPad? I ask because normally bigger screen is helpful when having multiple windows open which is unlikely on the iPad unless you do split screen apps.

For me it's not just multitasking. I actually harly ever multitask on iPad, 99% I multitask on Windows. I don't need the Magic keyboadd either.... But I do have uses for a big tablet.
Lumafusion works decently on the 12.9 but anything smaller feels cramped. A 15in would be better.
Less zooming when displaying some PDFs in portrait mode or my newspaper.
Note that I wouldn't be holding the iPad in my hand most of the time, I use a stand for that.
Also as a TV replacement. I don't want to use a TV (I have one from 2013 but never use it...). I want to be mobile when I watch. My tablets are my TV for movies etc. A 15in would give me more room. I actually already have a 15in tablet, the surface book 2, but in tablet mode (detached) it has only 3 hours of battery life. A iPad would have 10 hours or more.
Also note that a 15in iPad would not be my sole iPad, just as my 12.9 is not the only iPad I use regularly....
