Remember the 2G, then there was the 3G, then we went off the beaten path and went to the 3GS, so do you think the next version will be the 4G or something different

I doubt it will be the 4G, because past naming schemes involving the "G" have all been regarding network speed. I think it'll be a word. Like iPod "nano". It won't be iPhone nano, but I feel that that will be the naming scheme. iPhone followed by a word.

How about iPhone **** :D

The SS greater than android, symbian, windows phone 7, and webOS combined.

Personally I think they should go the all out humor route and call it
iPhone oops-we-did-it-again. Then in a year they can shave its top off and it can have baby iPhones with a backup travel dumb-phone.

if the rumor to have the new iphone record 720p video is true, then they could just call it the iphone HD

Since iPhone 4G makes no sense since the 'G' refers to the network and not the phone generation, I'm going with iPhone 3GP.

Why? The 'S' in 3GS stand for speed; if Apple uses either the dual-core chips, or some form of the A4 chip, the next iPhone will be all about Power, hence, iPhone 3GP.

3GSS is kind of weird. I don't see Apple calling it as that. Just as nobody expected the 3rd gen iPhone to be called 3GS, I'm not putting expectations on what Apple will call the 4th gen.

I don't think there was an "iPhone 2G" for exactly this reason. People are confusing the "2nd generation" and the "3G" network.

This year's iPhone will likely just be the "iPhone 3Gs", and then the following one the "iPhone 4G" (assuming mobile phone companies can get their new 4G network up and running by then).

iPhone HD since it will be able to record and play back HD movies. You heard it here first

There was no 2G. This is a misnomer that is repeated continuously.

1st gen - Original - 2.75G
2ed gen - 3G - 3G
3rd gen - 3GS - 3G
4th gen - ???? - 3G
5th gen - ???? - 4G (11 most likely)

that's plausible. But i wonder, does "HD" sound a bit retro, or somehow unpure? It carries connotations of tech trying to sound more impressive than it is.
