I don’t really “lose” things but I forget where I leave things in my house all the time. (Things tend to end up stacked under other things or between couch cushions)

Predicted sequence of events:
  1. Need to find where I left keys
  2. Need phone to find keys, can’t find phone
  3. Use Apple Watch to ping phone
  4. Find phone
  5. Use phone to find keys
At some point I might give up and stay home!
Leave the key on a little hook at the main door and save $29 or $45 depending where you are from.. :)
It sounds like me, looking for excuses to buy the latest gadget, ahah ?

I was thinking to pull the electronic out of the case, remove the speaker and hide one very well in the motorbike ecu. That would be a good cheap tracking device, and if someone steals it wouldn’t be able to make it beep and localise it in case they get a notification and maybe just give up and leave the bike somewhere on the street where it can be found.
very easily doable

Hey everyone - great thread. I've enjoyed reading it. Not for nothing... but you guys all realize that, if you use these things to thwart thieves... and the thief has an iPhone, the AirTag is going to "narc on itself". Right? The thief's iPhone is going to report that there is an unattached AirTag following or "in proximity" or whatever the Apple warning is.

Apple built that in to stop people from using AirTags to stalk each other. If a thief hops on your AirTagged bike, they're going to get a warning on their iPhone that it has an AirTag. I guess you could hope the thief has an Android... or no iPhone.

These things are really meant to find something you've misplaced or has been lost. It's not a LoJac (for you older people) or other anti-theft device. Apple has set these up to make it super easy for thieves to identify its presence and potentially defeat.
Yes, but it takes a while. I tested this and it didn't "narc" on my separately registered (i.e., on another phone and account) airtag until I arrived home. It tracked me the whole time, for a couple of hours, but I didn't get the notification I was being tracked until I returned home.

You get a least a couple hour head start on a thief, which is good for something.

after they find the first 3, they’ll give up.

Better yet, just fill your bag with airtags
Why do you think Apple sells a 4-pack?
Put 2+ on every item. After the first one, the thief might not look much further.
you get a notification for each tag. So when i tested yesterday she got 2 notifications. One for my keys the other my wallet. Can sound them separately to find each one too.

For those of you looking to place an AirTag inside your Wallet, I honestly don’t think it would work. The AirTag is about the thickness of 7 of the various cards I carry with me in my slim wallet. So that would essentially double the thickness of my wallet. I wouldn’t even be able to fit it in my wallet haha.

I ordered a keychain accessory to eventually place it with either my car keys or on my daily crossbody bag (which I typically keep my car keys in when not in the ignition). The keychain won’t arrive for another couple of weeks tho, so I was trying to figure out what to place the AirTag in so that it wouldn’t get scuffed up while inside my bag. I remembered that my Apple Watch came wrapped in a small cloth wrap when I first took it out of the box, so I just placed the AirTag in there and used some black electrical tape to close the open ends so that it wouldn’t fall out.

I’ve had mine since Friday, engraved, plus one Belkin keychain.

One is on my keys obviously and price aside, I went for the Belgian keychain as I run a lot and take my keys with me, putting them in a hip pocket. Leather seemed like a very bad idea.

One is in my wallet, hasn’t really made that big a difference in bulk.

Third one is in my gym bag and fourth in my backpack I take with me to the lab.

They work as expected upon trials at home, but thankfully I haven’t had to use them for retrieving lost items and hope I never do. That said, it’ll be a nice peace of mind that if I drop my keys during a run, they won’t be a lost cause.

I’m using it for my bikes… I carry a tool/tube container in the water bottle holder, I used double sided tape and then covered it with duct tape. I didn’t want it to go to the bottom, although I’m sure it wouldn’t make much of a difference.
Aside from under the seat I couldn’t think of anywhere else to mount it. I’m thinking that maybe mounting it under the chainstay tape, I’d just have to redo it.

The container is taped onto my bike so it doesn’t bounce out in trails or when in transit in my bike rack - it’s fairly secure. I guess a potential thief could rip it off and throw it aside and render the tracker useless, but I’m guessing their first thought won’t be “there’s a tracker in there let me ditch that!”

Scratches on the Airtag isn't gong to impede its function. Do you replace keys when they get scratched? It is a disposable item, even though it has an Apple logo.

I have an airtag inside my wallet and it works. Maybe it wouldnt fit in yours but it does in mine.

I just received my first airtag for my car keys (stored inside a key holder). Now I'm planning to get a couple more. One for my house keys (which I often leave behind in the car so as to have lighter pockets, so will hopefully also work as a car finder when I'm parked somewhere unfamiliar) and one for my water bottle I use at work, which I'll drop into my WH-1000XM3 case instead if I go on a trip.

I can't think of anything else that might need it right now.
Have you tried using the "find my car" feature in Apple maps? Assuming your car has bluetooth/Apple Play.

I gave in. I purchased the 4-pack airtags with the belkin airtag carrying keychain. I'll be picking it up this Saturday at the nearest apple store which is about 45 mins from me. It'll be interesting to see how it works once I get my hands on them!

The car idea is smart. I am directionally impaired when it comes to finding my car in a packed parking lot. The last time I went to a mall was to go to Apple to get my iPad issues figured out and the mall had a parking garage instead of like your regular target parking lot. I couldn't remember what level I parked my car at and my car does not have Apple CarPlay, I have a super basic 2013 Kia Forte that doesn't have cruise control or powered windows (lol!) — I spent about 15 minutes trying to remember where I parked my car, and a lot of times I will write down what level my car is parked in on my phone but sometimes that written note gets erased somehow and then I'm clueless. So I actually love this idea of using the airtag to help locate your car. But I'm definitely curious if the airtag will ping or alert others who has an iPhone about the car that may be 'missing' or if you can turn off that alert for a little bit until you come back.
There's an app i use called "BackWay".
Once you've tagged a starting location (and you can add a photo to that if you want) it will then guide you back later.

I did with my last car. It worked well, though I knew pretty much everywhere I went like the back of my hand and had no need of it.

My current car has no built in bluetooth. I use a dongle plugged into an aux-in port, but it isn't recognised as in-car bluetooth by my phone - so no "find my car"ing.

I got notifications after 50 minutes or so on my tests.

Two Cats, Keys, Car

Ditched the wallet years ago for an iPhone case with card holder, initially so my card carrier would have tracking but now won't go back to a wallet just cuz its one less thing to carry.
