Originally I got the 3G with AT&T in 2008 if I recall. Then got on a 2-3 year cycle after that.
Currently rocking my X.

2008 a black iPhone 3G 16GB.

Never looked to change since. I was interested in the original phone the year prior but didn't really have the faith in it. So I took out my first contract with a Sony Ericsson W960i a year prior. Once the 3G was announced I was convinced I wanted it and actually ran two contracts along at the same time for the last 6 months.

I can remember sitting down in the o2 store and being blown away by having the actual internet in my pocket with decent speeds. That was when the 3G was released with unlimited data and I used so much data it was silly. I was forever streaming albums on YouTube as I walked around. Good times indeed.

I used to miss out on the S version of phones and upgrade every generation. That stopped with the 6 as when the 7+ was released the AUP was introduced in the UK and I've updated every year since.

in 2018 i bought in january my first iphone the iphone SE i had it till november and now i own an iphone 7 perfect screen size for me that’s what i discovered This is the size for me

November 18, 2007. Little 15 year old me convinced my parents to split the cost of the original iPhone with me as an early birthday/Christmas gift.

Only took me until the 3GS to convince my mom to get one and my dad got the 4 as his first. We’re a happy Apple family. 😁

iPhone 6 in 2014. Launch devices every year since.
Diehard Android before that and Windows Mobile even before that. I've been into smartphones since they were a thing. Motorola Mpx200, HTC 8125 & 8925(Tilt), Samsung Blackjack, then a bevy of lackluster Android phones.

My first iPhone was the iPhone 5S in April 2014 when T-Mobile finally carried them in their stores.

Original iPhone as soon as it was launched in the UK (November 2007): I also moved to O2 then as they had exclusivity for it.

I didn't have it long though as I upgraded to the 16GB original iPhone as soon as it launched and passed my "old" 8GB to my wife

iPhone 3G in November of 2008.

That was right when I started traveling for business. Can't imagine life on the road without a smartphone and especially the iPhone. (Flown more than a million miles but in seat since)

I was pretty much anti-apple back then. Disliked Apple because they were cool and slightly counter culture and no particularly good reason. I was going to buy a Samsung smartphone with QWERTY physical keyboard and stylus. (was coming from the best 5MP Samsung camera phone you could buy back then that I had to get from Korea and wasn't even for sale in the US).

My friend getting his doctorate at the time was a longtime Mac user but never had an iPhone. He suggested I look at one. I was SUPER hesitant to not have a physical keyboard. The screen and user interface sold me. I haven't looked back since and have purchased 8 phones and 3 computers and a watch (amongst other things) since.

I am now a FanBoy...

Obviously AT&T had the early monopoly which really limited the number of people that bought it because of those horrible termination fees the cellular industry used to slap us with.
Hell... in 2007, cellular was much cheaper and termination fees were only like $150-200 back then. Hardly horrible IMO.

2009 and the 3GS for me. Used Windows Mobile phones (PDA/mobile hybrids) up until then even after the very first iphone and 3G came out because while the UI was very nice the hardware wasn't as good as the even some Windows Mobile phones at the time. Since the 3GS though I've pretty much stuck with Apple and upgraded to each new iPhone every year since then. iPhone 11 Pro Max on the way as well 😁

OP, this is a great and interesting poll but I think more people will answer if you put the model that was available next to each year. It was easy for me since I know that I got the second Iphone but imagine if you got the iphone 5 for the first time. It would require some research.
I agree.
I could edit and just list out all models per year, but it was going to look like a convoluted mess after I typed the first few when setting up the poll so I just went with year.
This is because some people would have gotten a different phone than each year’s new offerings, also.

Whenever the 6s+ came out. Prior to that I was on windows phones and variety of android phones. I never felt an iphone or ios was worth it until then.

iPhone 3G at launch day 2008. 😁

Since then, I owned every iPhone-„Generation“, but not every single model variant of a generation: for exaple I owned the 5s but not the 5c. Or right now I own the XR but never owned a XS...

I began the iPhone journey in December 2009 with the iPhone 3GS. Been with the iPhone ever since, having bought the 4s, 5, 6, 6s, 7, 8 Plus, the Xs Max, and soon the 11 Pro Max.

My favourite model out of those is either the 5 or the Xs Max.

Special mention to the 6s - while being a fast phone at the time and bringing some nice upgrades, it also had lousy battery life and the camera was by far the worst for the time imo.
