there isn't anything. I tell them the bad and the good, as I like giving someone a balanced representation o_O

The bad:
wussy videocards
slow FSB on g4s
$$$
lack of games
only two usb ports on powerbook
lookupd gives me problems every other day (<-- that's truly annoying)
no support for m$ new wma codecs (but that's not shocking)
keyboard navigation for buttons often sucks

The good:
good unix dev: apache, php, perl, java preinstalled.
xcode
nice looking (both hardware and software)
fink
no registry
just in general i love os x.

I have a POS Dell Latitude D600 that work burdened me with..

It only has 2 USB ports..

AND it has a parallel port. A PARALLEL PORT. For a printer. Who the **** still has printers that need parallel ports? And this **** STILL comes as standard on these laptops and desktops? What the hell?

Hmmm.....my complaints are general to all Macs:

- trailing-edge video cards for all but the most $$$ Power Macs, and high prices for "Mac Edition" video cards that differ only in firmware from way cheaper PC versions.

- Safari is pretty good, but probably the flakiest piece of software I have used in OS X (it caused the ONE application crash that I ever experienced on my G4).

- File sharing isn't always the best experience in the world, though it is easy to set up.

- Games are almost never released simultaneously for PC and Mac, and ports take too long when they actually happen.

However, my experience with my particular Mac has been very positive. My G4 tower has been by far the best computer I've ever had - it's fast, never crashes (well, OK, once - see above) and was fun to put together (satisfied the upgrade bug in me).

The only thing that I would change is the somewhat noisy fan - but I'm using an OC'd processor so I knew what I was getting into, and it isn't really that bad (just not Mini-quiet).

I've read this whole thread and loved it. I'm still gonna get an iMac, but it makes me wonder...

My Dell NEVER crashes. IE never freezes. I don't encounter any of the problems that I read about with these Macs or Windows. Yet I still want a Mac. I've wanted one since I saw the iMac G4 when it was released. I'm wondering if I should just count my blessings because I may possibly have one of the very few worry free PCs in existence. I am not on a network, I only use my PC to download music, movies, apps, etc. I burn cds, vcds, dvds. I use iTunes, Photoshop Album (works great BTW), Word, etc. It does however have a problem when I try to use Limewire and iTunes at the same time. It will freeze if I do that. But since I know that, then I don't use them both at the same time.

Anyway, I'm still gonna get one. Just cause I wanna learn a new OS, and
OS X looks really nice.

Switch! A Mac will let you have LimeWire and iTunes running together seamlessly. The authorities on the other hand...

That's encouraging. After reading one of the worst Mac-bashing threads on these boards, you still want one. Kudos.

I think you'll love it. Despite what we're all saying here, we adore OSX. :D

The only really bad thing I can think of (besides price), is that itunes really does have perhaps the worst interface I've ever seen for a media player. I tell myself that itunes was created by an independent group and Apple just puts their name on it.

Come on everyone, let it out.

You'll feel better. :D

I can't get my external hard drive to mount on my Powerbook via USB2. It does mount via firewire though. It is a USB2/Firewire case. I want the extra space when working with digital video so I need the firewire port for the camera and I need the Hard Drive on USB2!!! It is frustrating.

the amount of crap that i get in the bottom of my keyboard!
- dust, hairs, bits of whatever, twigs, the place is a jungle! and no decent way of cleaning it! argh.

But hardware quality seems too terrible. It wil be great if OS X can be installed on other PCs.

It can be. I've been running OS X on my athlon 64 pc for a few months now.

I switched a month ago to a Powerbook (12'', 512 RAM) and don't miss my Dell (P 2,4 MHz, 512 RAM, Readon 9700 Pro) at all.

I said games goodbye and that's it. I was wasting too much time with games so it wasn't a hard choice.

Never had Safari or any other app crashed except for iMovie, but I was almost forcing it to give up.

And everybody I know would love to have a Mac but they think they are too expensive.

I live with four others in a shared apartment and they always want to get hands on my sweet little PBaby.

No complaints around here!

Everyone else has a Windows-machine and every time I sit in front of one I really start to get a headache.

It gets uncomfortably hot, but sterile... wow..

What I don't tell my Windows Using Friends (tm) is that the trackpad gives a slight buzzing sensation under my thumbs when the powerbook is charging (although I love that)

Seriously, what is up with the buzzing feeling on Powerbooks when they charge? It doesn't just happen on the trackpad for me, but all over the 'Book.

My only problem with my Mac is whenever I unplug most USB devices (modems, anything) I get a kernel panic. BUT that gives me a chance to show people how much sexier a Mac spazzing is than a BSOD.

A friend of mine has an engineering degree from Virginia Tech. He was the ONLY person in his field of study with a Mac. He had to run some emulator thingy ma job to use the software.

yeh,,, my story is quite reverse,,, at the aero department at michigan, most profs use macs and are pretty die hard. secrets... secrets... when safari locks up, it would be nice to go in and close that specific website that locked your computer up... also, there is an apple equivalent 'blue screen of death'... only it's not blue... it's black and the whole screen grays and says 'you need to restart your computer', albeit it does so in a very 'elegant' fashion. i feel that not very many people have seen this...

about that buzzing, sometimes my ipod does it too (when it's charging)... same type of buzzing on tv antennas... any electrical engineers here to explain that?

My AVI DIVX media skips on my iBook G3 700 mhz. Oh wait, and it doesn't on a PII 400? Someone explain this one to me.... No one must know! oops...too late

the only people i really tell that macs are better are my parents

I lied and told my dad my mac mini came with microsoft office so now i have to work around that

for some reason my printer wasnt working over the network even though i told my dad macs were plug and play with everything

also never tell my dad that my mac freezes (usually when i have 8+ programs running though, his computer can hardly handle more than 3)

that all i can think of

Go and get some more RAM, and knock his machine off! :D
